Morgan Rogers poked the ball away from United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir before finishing into an open net after Harry Maguire's header.
But referee Thomas Bramall blew his whistle before the ball crossed the line.
He thought Rogers had kicked the ball out of Bayindir's hands and therefore awarded a free-kick against the Villa man.
However, replays showed Bayindir did not have the ball under control and the goal should have stood.

However, the laws of the game state that a goal cannot be retrospectively awarded after the whistle has blown - even if done in error.
VAR did take a brief look at the incident.
But that was only to confirm the whistle had gone before the goal was scored - thus leaving the officials hamstrung.
And the Premier League statement clarified the situation.

Their Match Centre account tweeted during the United vs Villa match: "72' - The referee's call was a free kick to Manchester United with Bayindir deemed to be in control of the ball before Rogers gained possession.
"The whistle was blown by the referee before the ball entered the goal, therefore the incident was not reviewable by the VAR."
Ruben Amorim vows 'good days are coming' after 'disaster season' as Man Utd flops give him daggers during public apology
To rub salt into the wounds for Villa - who were in fifth at the time of the referee controversy - United went up the other end and scored the opener through Amad Diallo.
A Christian Eriksen penalty sealed a 2-0 home win as Villa had to settle for sixth and missed out on the Champions League on goal difference behind Newcastle - who lost at home to Everton.
And the Premier League's statement did not do anything to tame ten-man Villa's fury - as SunSport understands the club will launch an official complaint over the appointment of an inexperienced ref for such an important match.
Bramall has taken charge of league matches across the Premier League and Championship this term - with Sunday's Old Trafford game his 11th in the top flight.
That took his Premier League tally to 30 - ironically, that is less than a third of the amount overseen by today's fourth official Bobby Madley.
Captain John McGinn was raging after the game and said: "I think everyone wanted the correct decisions when the VAR was implemented.
"You watch rugby, even if the referee has awarded a try and it's wrong, its overturned.
"It's so so hard to take especially when the impact it has on us, as a club and a team, is so big.
"It's really, really tough to take and handle. I don't think we deserved to win but if you were 1-0 up at that point and all you need is a point to get to the Champions League, it's costly.
"Moving forward, the rule has to be looked at as the correct decisions were not getting made at the end of the day. I think [referee] Thomas [Bramall] knew. It probably wasn't fair on him at that moment either. The boys are gutted."
Asked if the ref acknowledged his mistake, he said: "He didn't really know what to say.
"Because of the impact it has on us as players and our careers, the club, you are obviously angry. I think he is a young referee who has progressed very quickly.
"Maybe we could look at having more experienced referees. I don't know. It's just an incredible decision and makes today even worse than it should be."
Villa manager Unai Emery added: "It was a mistake. A big mistake.
"The match we played overall in 90 minutes with the red card and this goal disallowed, it was a key moment. But overall, they did more."
Emery revealed he spoke with the referee after the game: "Yes, I told him but he knows it [he made a mistake]."

New Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has targeted the Spain midfielder as his priority after Real were destroyed by PSG in their Club World Cup semi-final earlier this month. Rodri, 29, was out from September until the last week of the season after suffering major ACL and meniscus injuries in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal. He made one start and three appearances off the bench in the Club World Cup but only lasted 37 minutes after his arrival as City were shocked by Al Hilal in the last 16 before suffering a fresh problem. Uncertainty over his true physical condition is one element that might persuade Real to wait and see, with his City contract due to expire in 2027. George Baldock drowned in pool day before he was due to fly home for son's birthday
Former Sheffield United star George Baldock died at his home in Athens last October and an inquest into his death heard no drugs or alcohol were found in his system Ex-Premier League star George Baldock drowned in the swimming pool at his Athens home just a day before he was due to fly home for his son's first birthday, an inquest into his death heard. Baldock, 31, was found dead in the Greek capital where he was plying his trade for Panathinaikos. The former Sheffield United defender had no drugs or alcohol in his system and there was no evidence of criminal activity, the court in Buckinghamshire was told. His death has been ruled an accident. The inquest also heard that Baldock had a very large heart 'that would have meant that he was susceptible to heart arrythmias' - an irregular heartbeat, either too fast or too slow. Baldock had played a club fixture just three days before the incident. His worried fiancee raised the alarm after failing to contact him, before the owner of the house he was living him found his body in the pool. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, Baldock could not be saved. "George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, team-mate and person," his family said in a statement. "Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands. "We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son." Baldock came through the youth ranks at MK Dons and played 125 times for the club over an eight-year period, scoring twice and winning their player of the season award in 2015-16. He had loan spells at Northampton, Tamworth and Oxford while with the Dons, but he made his name at Bramall Lane after moving to Sheffield United in 2017. In seven years with the Blades, he established himself as a fan favourite scoring six times from right-back in 219 appearances. He helped United to the Premier League twice, finishing runners-up in the Championship in both 2018-19 and 2022-23. Baldock left for Panathinaikos in the summer of 2024 and played just four times for his new club before the tragic incident. He qualified to play for Greece through his grandmother and made his debut in a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland at Windsor Park in June 2022. In all, he would earn 12 senior caps. Greece played against England at Wembley the day after his death with the match going ahead despite his grief-stricken teammates only learning of his passing the previous night. Tributes were paid before the game which Greece won 2-1. Baldock's shirt was held aloft after their first goal and following the full-time whistle.

Marcus Rashford completes loan move to Barcelona
The 27-year-old academy product has not added to his 426 first-team appearances for the Red Devils since being hauled off in a Europa League match away to Viktoria Plzen on December 12. Rashford ended last season on loan at Aston Villa and is among five wantaway players that have been training away from Ruben Amorim's first-team squad since pre-season began, as they explored their options in the transfer market. The England international has now wrapped up the move he had hoped for, joining Barcelona on loan for the 2025/26 season. 'I'm very excited,' Rashford told Barcelona club media. 'I think it's a club where people's dreams come true and they win big prizes. And what the club stands for really means a lot to me as well. It feels like home and this is a big factor in my choice to come here. 'For me it's a family club and people are comfortable here, it's a good place for good players to showcase their skills.' Rashford added that he had enjoyed watching Barcelona since a young age and that he was attracted by coach Hansi Flick's desire to build on a season in which they won LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Supercup. 'I'm definitely full of excitement and I'm just hungry to go out there and help this team win,' he said. 'They won so much last year year and I can see the ambition of the club is to do even better, and as a player that's what you want. Our new number 14: Marcus Rashford 💙❤️ — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) July 23, 2025 'It keeps you improving year on year and that's what you need to be the best version of yourself. I'm excited to be here and I'm eager to get going.' The LaLiga champions confirmed that they have an option to make the deal permanent. That clause is reported to be 35million euros (£30.3million) and PA understands the deal sees Barcelona cover Rashford's wages for the campaign. The Premier League club said: 'Everyone at Manchester United wishes Marcus good luck for the season.' Rashford completed the relevant paperwork on Wednesday and is set to wear the number 14 with the Blaugrana. Rashford has been training away from Amorim's first-team squad (Martin Rickett/PA) Both he and Barca have made no secret of their hope to make the move happen this summer, with talks ramping up over the last week. The forward landed in Catalonia on Sunday evening to tie up a deal that the player hope can kickstart his career and boost his hopes of going to next summer's World Cup with England. Rashford departs 23rd in United's all-time appearance list and as their 15th-highest scorer with 138 goals, having notched a brace on his February 2016 debut against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League. He won five major trophies with his boyhood club and was crowned their player of the year in 2022-23 after scoring a career-high 30 goals, which saw him rewarded with a reported £325,000-a-week deal until 2028. 🗞️ Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on a season-long loan. Best of luck, Marcus 👊 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) July 23, 2025 Rashford has registered 17 goals in 62 England appearances and been to four major tournaments with his country. The forward missed his penalty in the European Championship final shootout defeat to Italy in 2021. As Rashford heads to start a new chapter in Spain, work continues at Old Trafford to offload Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia. The quartet have not travelled on United's pre-season tour of the United States.
