Hindko Academy publishes Kotal Rang journal
A retired civil servant, Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi, is the patron of the journal. A research scholar of the Hindko language and author, Muhammad Ziauddin, serves as the managing editor, while Nusrat Naseem, a writer of Hindko and Urdu from Kohat, is the editor.
The latest issue features contributions from several prominent Kohati literati, including Syed Matiullah Shah, Muhammad Jan Atif, Hina Rauf, Syed Masoom Shah, Liaquat Ali, and Shujaat Ali Rahi.
There are pieces as well by Dr Seema Shafee, Fazle Rabi Rahi, Jabbar Mirza, Nayyer Sarhadi, Naeem Iqbal Kohati, Dr Nisar Turabi, Syed Ibrar Hussain, Muhammad Ziauddin, and Nusrat Naseem. It is worth mentioning that Kotal Rang is the regular Hindko literary journals published by the Gandhara Hindko Academy which is run by the Gandhara Hindko Board. Other publications include Hindko Adab, Hindkowan, Sarkhail, Fatima, The Gandhara Voice, Sargi Da Tara (dedicated to the Hazara Division), Gomal Rang (Saraiki), Khowar Nama (Chitrali), Watan (Kohistani), and the research journal, Mother.

I think in English, but I pay the price: Juggun Kazim on losing touch with Urdu
Actor and television host Juggun Kazim recently opened up about her 'English-medium' upbringing, her inability to read Urdu, and the humbling lessons she learnt while working with Pakistan Television (PTV). Appearing on an episode of the Ahmed Fozan Podcast, Kazim candidly discussed the challenges of not learning one's national language. 'I have this problem where I think in English,' she shared, admitting that it affects her ability to consume Urdu-language content. 'When I was young, everyone in my house only spoke English. My nanny was from Sri Lanka, so we conversed in English, and I studied at Lahore Grammar School, which was also an English-medium school.' Critiquing the obsession with English in private schools, Kazim recalled, 'When I was in school, we weren't allowed to speak any other language except during the Urdu period. I'm glad that schools no longer enforce this 'English-only' rule.' Reflecting on her upbringing, Kazim said she often questions her mother's choices: 'I ask my mother, 'What gora complex did you have?' It comes from such a regressive mindset that I'm living in my own country and yet can't read my mother tongue. Shame on me for that.' Kazim credited her time at PTV for improving her Urdu and grounding her as a professional. 'When I returned from Canada, I was a bit of a snob and couldn't host Independence Day or Defence Day shows because those required fluent Urdu commentary,' she admitted. She recalled her first boss at PTV warning her about the importance of the language: 'He told me, 'You look down upon Urdu and this channel, but in the end, it will be Urdu that helps you.' He was right. I was professionally groomed during that time, and working with PTV truly grounded me.' The morning show host stressed that being unable to speak or read one's national language is nothing to take pride in. 'All of this is really unfortunate. I've suffered a lot because of it. Even today, I read my scripts in Roman Urdu because I can't read the actual script. It's sad, and I'm not proud of it.' She added that this shortcoming has affected her children as well. 'My kids face the same issue. I try to make them read an Urdu storybook every night before bed, so I'm still trying in that way.' Kazim concluded with a message for parents across the country: 'I talk about this often because I want to urge parents not to send their children to English-only schools. It's wrong. Please make sure they receive an Urdu education as well.'

Turkish envoy stresses cultural collaboration
Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye, Irfan Neziroglu, on Tuesday, expressed his appreciation for the strong literary, cultural, social, and political relations between Türkiye and Pakistan, emphasising the need to deepen these ties. He underscored the importance of renewed institutional partnerships, collaborative translation initiatives, and the organisation of joint literary and cultural events. Such efforts, he noted, won't only advance mutual literary interests and celebrate shared cultural heroes, but also strengthen people-to-people connections and mutual understanding between the two nations. The Turkish envoy uttered these words during a visit to the Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) where he held a meeting with its Chairperson, Dr Najeeba Arif. Also present were Dr Halil Toker — celebrated Turkish writer, translator, and intellectual, and Director of the Yunus Emre Institute in Pakistan — as well as PAL's Director General, Sultan Muhammad Nawaz Nasir. The meeting focused on fostering literary and cultural ties between Pakistan and Türkiye. Dr Najeeba briefed the ambassador on the Academy's initiatives, including the promotion of literature in Pakistani languages, welfare programmes for writers, its publication efforts, and literary translation projects with international partners. She also referenced the earlier Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Istanbul University and the Academy, and highlighted key publications that reflect longstanding literary collaboration. Notably, in 1991, PAL published a book on the eminent Turkish poet Yunus Emre. In 2022, as part of its acclaimed series Pakistani Adab ke Me'maar, the Academy published Dr Halil Toker: Shakhsiyat aur Funn. That same year, it also published Jadeed Turki Afsana, a collection translated into Urdu by Dr Halil Toker and Samina Toker. Dr Najeeba further shared that the Academy regularly features translations of Turkish literary works in its quarterly journal Adabiyat. Over the years, several Turkish writers have visited Pakistan and participated in international conferences organized by the Academy. Dr Najeeba Arif also commended the contributions of Turkish scholars to Urdu literature, particularly acknowledging the efforts of Dr Halil Toker, Dr Asuman Belen Özcan, and Dr Dawood Shahbaz. The meeting also included discussions on launching joint literary projects between PAL and the Yunus Emre Institute in the coming months. At the end of the meeting, Dr Najeeba Arif presented a selection of the Academy's publications to His Excellency Mr Irfan Neziroglu and Dr Halil Toker.
