TIDC scouts look for qualities in athlete beyond field of play, says top cyclist and coach Maxwell Trevor

Talent scouts look out for small things like an athlete's warm-up routine and demeanour besides an athlete's performance on the field of play, the Sports Authority of India's Talent Identification and Development Committee (TIDC) member for Cycling, Maxwell Trevor, has revealed.
An 11-time national track cycling champion in his heydays and with a fourth place in the 1986 Asian Games, Maxwell Trevor is among the most respected Cycling coaches. He shared insights into the work of the TIDC team when he explained what it seeks in athletes competing in Khelo India Youth Games 2025 Bihar.
Maxwell Trevor said TIDC members for Cycling focus on every athlete, especially between the ages of 14 and 16. 'We are watching their pedalling, we're watching their warm-up routines, we are watching their discipline,' he said. 'Some athletes are so disciplined that they know when to warm up.'
'Firstly, we look for younger athletes with whom coaches can engage in a long-term training program. We also look at the kind of equipment like frames and wheels that athletes are using on their rides because we know that it is a big factor. We also assess the athletes for their explosive power,' he said.
'After that, we have sport-specific tests on bicycles attached to a computer that captures the data like the cadence, the revolutions per minute of the pedals, the heart rate and the power generated in Watts in different time frames. All these tests give us a good idea of the talent that the athlete has," he said.
He does not stop looking at the physical aspect of the sport. 'We are also looking at the mental ability of the young riders,' he said. 'I've come across many talented athletes who lack mental ability and do not believe in themselves. So these are aspects that we take into consideration.'
Maxwell Trevor, who remembers his own selfless coach Mumtaz Ahmed with respect, gratitude and fondness, is happy that Cycling Federation of India has begun paying more attention to coaching at the grassroots level. 'Yes, the Federation is working in that direction,' he said.
'The UCI Level 1 course for coaches at the grassroot level is now available in India. The attempt is to multiply the number of coaches at the grassroot level so that they become a feeding unit to the main centers. I think we're on the right track and that things will fall in place,' he said.

Neeraj Chopra Classic: Kishore Jena Out Due To Ankle Injury; Replacement Named

Last Updated: Kishore Jena, Asian Games silver medallist, is out of the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 due to an ankle injury. Yash Vir Singh replaces him. India's highly anticipated Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 will miss one of its star attractions, as Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Jena has been ruled out due to an ankle injury. This setback, confirmed just days before the event, has led the organisers to replace Jena with Yash Vir Singh in the elite javelin lineup for the competition scheduled for July 5. Jena, who achieved a personal best of 87.54m to secure silver behind Neeraj Chopra at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, was expected to be a strong contender against the world's best at this landmark event. His absence is a disappointment not only for Indian fans but also for a meet designed to showcase the finest javelin talent on Indian soil. Yash Vir Singh, ranked 41st in the world, steps in with his own credentials, having recorded a personal best of 82.57m at the 2025 Asian Championships in Gumi, Korea. He joins compatriots Neeraj Chopra, Sachin Yadav, Rohit Yadav, and Sahil Silwal in the Indian contingent. What Is Neeraj Chopra Classic? The Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025, India's first international javelin competition, is a collaboration between Neeraj himself, JSW Sports, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), and World Athletics (WA). The event promises to be the highest-tier international athletics meet ever staged in India. Leading the star-studded field will be Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic champion and reigning world titleholder. Joining him are global heavyweights such as Anderson Peters (Grenada), two-time world champion Thomas Rohler (Germany), and Rio 2016 gold medallist Julius Yego (Kenya). Originally scheduled for May 24, the event was postponed due to security concerns and will now take place on July 5 at Bengaluru's Sree Kanteerava Stadium. Expectations remain high as the stage is set for a historic evening of javelin excellence on Indian soil. Neeraj Chopra has prepared for the event named after him by winning his first Diamond League leg in two years. Earlier in the season, he surpassed the 90m mark for the first time in Doha, finishing second. Recently, he won the Ostrava Golden Spike meet with a throw of 85.29m. No allegation of sexual harassment was levelled in that complaint," SAI Regional Centre (Sonepat) stated in response to PTI query. 'A detailed inquiry was conducted in which statements of the complainant, the coach concerned, the fellow coaches and staff members and fellow athletes were taken and the allegations made could not be established. 'SAI is committed to ensuring clean sports and will extend any cooperation required during investigation based on the FIR, at any point of time," it added. What Investigation Found? She even stopped my daughter's fellow boxers from helping or supporting her during the bout. We have CCTV footage to prove that my daughter was alone in the ring." The parents further alleged that the coach, who accused the victim of talking excessively to boys, insulted her in front of other boxers and demanded her phone. The parents claimed that the victim was repeatedly slapped for refusing to comply with the coach's instructions. However, SAI's investigation found that other boxers on the tour did not corroborate these allegations.
