Birbhum SP moves Calcutta HC against NCW summons in Anubrata Mondal case
The summons is linked to a case involving TMC leader Anubrata Mondal, who was allegedly heard hurling 'unspeakably abusive language' at a police officer in a viral audio clip.
According to the counsel for SP Amandeep, the Commission is 'interfering with the investigation' by directing the addition of specific IPC sections and seeking the production of the case diary. The NCW had also summoned the officer to appear in person at its Delhi office.
The matter was mentioned before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, who granted permission for it to be listed. It is likely to be heard on Wednesday.
Speaking to The Indian Express, NCW member Archana Majumdar said: 'It is the Commission's mandate to intervene in cases involving violations of women's modesty or rights. We found that our advisory was not complied with in the action taken report sent to us. The SP was expected to appear in person to clarify the situation. As he had earlier cited prior engagements, we had rescheduled the date. Now that the matter is before the High Court, we will act as per the court's directive.'
The SP was initially directed to appear before the Commission on July 1. However, he responded to the notice on June 28, stating that due to law-and-order duties through the first week of July, he would be unable to travel and requested to attend the hearing virtually.
Following this, the NCW issued a second notice on July 2, directing him to appear in person on July 14 at 12 noon at its New Delhi headquarters.
In its letter, the NCW termed the allegations 'grave' and said the matter required the 'highest level of institutional accountability and transparency'. The Commission said that no further extensions would be granted. If the SP is unable to attend due to documented law-and-order exigencies, either the Additional SP or the SDPO of Bolpur must appear with all relevant documents and records, it said.

‘Neither central nor state forces allowed in assembly'
1 2 Kolkata: The advocate general, in his submission to Calcutta High Court, on Tuesday denied BJP 's allegation of discrimination between central and state forces on the Bengal assembly precincts. AG Kishore Datta pleaded that neither central nor state forces were allowed as security to MLAs. "However, there are some policemen deployed in the House, without arms, on the directions of the high court," Datta said. He submitted that all other security personnel were made to wait in shelters. "The prayer made by the leader of opposition (Suvendu Adhikari) to allow central forces within the assembly precincts/House would result in an order of reverse discrimination," the AG said. The AG urged the court of Justice Amrita Sinha to consider whether a direction to the legislature presided over by the speaker, who enjoys certain privileges and immunity under Articles 178, 194, 208, 212 and Entry 13 of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution, was preferable and how far the functions of the legislature could be brought under the purview of judicial review. Senior counsel for Adhikari, Billwadal Bhattacharya, held that the point of the matter was whether constitutional provisions could be suspended by issuing an administrative letter from the speaker's office. Justice Sinha adjourned the hearing till July 21.

Kanhaiya Lal murder accused plea in SC seeks direction to stay 'Udaipur Files' film release
NEW DELHI: Mohammed Javed, one of the accused in the 2022 murder of Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli, has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court seeking a fair trial and stay on the release of the film The Udaipur Files: Kanhaiyalal Tailor Murder, scheduled to be released on 11 July 2025. Javed -- 8th accused in the murder case -- in his petition argued that the film is communally provocative and could prejudice ongoing judicial proceedings. "Releasing such a movie at this juncture, portraying the accused as guilty and the story as conclusively true, has the potential to seriously prejudice the ongoing proceedings," he stated in his plea. Javed sought direction to halt the release of the film which is said to be based on events pertaining to the case. He highlighted in his petition that if the film releases, it is likely to influence public opinion in a manner that could affect the fairness of the trial. He added that the film will likely compromise the presumption of innocence. "This directly impacts the right to a free and fair trial of the Petitioner, as guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India," said, Javed in his petition filed before the top court. Udaipur-based tailor Teli was brutally murdered in June 2022, allegedly by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous.
