India's Lacky Shines At U17 World Wrestling Championships, Reaches 110kg Final

India's Lacky advanced to the men's freestyle 110kg final, beating rivals from Japan, Georgia, and Iran. Gourav Punia is still in medal contention through repechage.
India's rising wrestling star Lacky delivered a commanding performance on Friday to reach the men's freestyle 110kg final at the U17 World Wrestling Championships, putting himself on the brink of becoming a world champion.
Competing with remarkable composure and technical prowess, Lacky overcame a challenging draw that included opponents from traditional wrestling powerhouses like Japan, Georgia, and Iran.
Lacky began his campaign with a statement win over Japan's Hanto Hayashi, earning a victory by technical superiority—a format where the match ends early when a wrestler achieves a certain point margin. He followed it up with another clinical performance, shutting out Georgia's Murtaz Bagdavadze 8-0.
In the high-octane semifinal bout, Lacky faced Iran's Amirhossein M. Naghdalipour, a tough and aggressive opponent. The Indian wrestler led 15-7 before pinning his Iranian rival to secure a spot in the gold medal match. He will now face Magomedrasul Omarov, who competes under the United World Wrestling (UWW) flag, in Saturday's final.
If victorious, Lacky will join the ranks of India's junior world champions and cement his status as a major prospect in heavyweight freestyle wrestling.
Since Kikiniou advanced to the final, Punia earned a second chance through the repechage bracket—a lifeline that allows wrestlers to fight for bronze if they lose to a finalist. Punia now needs to win two matches on Saturday to claim a spot on the podium.
Shivam and Jaiveer Singh Exit in Early Rounds
India's Shivam (48kg) exited the competition in the Round of 16 after a narrow 6-7 loss to Kazakhstan's Sabyrzhan Rakhatov. Hopes of a repechage path faded after Rakhatov was defeated in the quarterfinal, eliminating Shivam from medal contention.
In the 55kg category, Jaiveer Singh started strong with a technical superiority win against Greece's Ioannis Kesidis. But in the quarterfinals, he fell 0-3 to American Greyton F. Burnett. Burnett's subsequent semifinal loss meant Jaiveer also missed out on a repechage opportunity.

‘When Siraj took the last wicket, as much as I was disappointed…': England coach McCullum hails India in 'best series'

Brendon McCullum reserved massive praise for Mohammed Siraj for producing a lion-hearted effort at the Oval. His performance, especially the final wicket of Gus Atkinson, left the England head coach disappointed yet full of admiration for the Indian pacer's heart and grit. Chasing a 374-run target, England were bundled out for 367 courtesy Siraj's five-wicket haul, which included a sensational burst of 3-9 on Monday's final morning. England head coach Brendon McCullum reflects on five-match Test series against England.(Action Images via Reuters) After resuming on 339-6, England lost four wickets for 28 runs, as Gus Atkinson became the final victim of Siraj, which helped India level the series 2-2. McCullum was all praise for Siraj for his efforts at the Oval. He didn't back down from the challenge when India was backed against the wall. 'When [Mohammed] Siraj took that final wicket, as much as I was disappointed, I had admiration for him — for the fight he's got as a cricketer and the way he was able to do what he did," McCullum told Sky Sports. Meanwhile, the England coach described the series as the finest five-Test contest he's ever been involved in, highlighting the fierce competition between the two sides. He noted that the intensity never dropped, with gripping cricket and even a few heated on-field exchanges adding to the drama. 'That is the best five-match Test series I have ever been a part of or witnessed,' McCullum told Sky Sports. 'It just oscillated so much throughout the six weeks, and I felt it had everything. There was hostility at times, camaraderie at times, great cricket at times, and some average cricket as well, because of the pressure both teams were put under. We knew it was going to be hard coming into the series. We knew they were going to test us physically and mentally. I think it tested both teams more than we expected. It was a cracking series to be a part of," he added. McCullum also reflected on the gripping 2-2 series draw against India, calling it a just result after five fiercely contested Tests. Acknowledging the toll of playing five full matches, he praised the players' mental resilience and the effort required to endure such intensity. 'I think 2-2 was a fair reflection. Playing all five days of all five Tests becomes a mental exertion, and I thought the way they dealt with that was impressive. Obviously, we had to call in fresh legs for this last Test match. You know that fatigue is coming, but you don't know what it's like until it hits you. It is the hardest thing in cricket — playing a five-match series and being tested as much as you are, for as long as you are. It tests you not just as a sportsperson but as a character because it questions how much you want it. As a fan of the game, I thought it was an unbelievable spectacle," he concluded.

‘If he had taken the catch…': Shubman Gill intervenes as Mohammed Siraj gets emotional on dropping Harry Brook

The fifth and final Test match at The Oval saw India outfox England to draw the series. It was a thrilling encounter that saw both sides stage comebacks, but in the end, Mohammed Siraj's performance became the deciding factor. He had an action-packed outing and ended the match with a five-wicket haul. The Indian pacer's bowling was like a blockbuster movie, and he showed immense grit to come out on top. Shubman Gill had an hilarious explanation for Mohammed Siraj's dropped catch. On Day 4, he dropped the crucial catch of Harry Brook when he was batting on 19. Siraj stumbled to the boundary ropes after taking the catch. Brook was handed a lifeline and ended up smacking a ton. Brook and Joe Root's partnership proved to be the catalyst for England's comeback, with the latter also getting a ton. Then, fast forward to Day 5, England needed only 35 runs to win, with India requiring four wickets. It looked like the match and the series would go in England's favour. To make matters worse for India, Jamie Overton began Day 5 with back-to-back fours off the first two deliveries against Prasidh Krishna. But Lady Luck had other plans, and Siraj rose to the occasion. In the next over, he removed Jamie Smith, and then one over later, he removed Overton. Then Prasidh Krishna struck two overs later, taking the wicket of Josh Tongue. After Tongue's dismissal, England were nine down in their run chase of 374, and were at 357/9. The dismissal forced an injured Chris Woakes to come out to the middle. The pacer had a sling on, batting left-handed and one-handed. After Woakes' arrival, there were two overs of suspense, and then Siraj completed his five-wicket haul, removing Atkinson and handing India the win. Shubman Gill on Mohammed Siraj's dropped catch For Siraj, the match was a story of villain to hero. From dropping Brook's catch, he went on to win the match for India. Speaking during the post-match press conference, Siraj said, 'Yes, it was a game-changing moment because Harry Brook is an extraordinary player. He is always in attacking mode. Some players play differently; they get into defensive mode. But he's an attacking batsman. That time had I taken Brook's catch, the game would be different. Then I thought this is a game-changing moment. But I am a senior bowler, I will not put my shoulder down because I was like, 'okay, it's happened, happens to everyone in the game.' But yes, at that time I thought this is a game-changing moment.' Gill, who was also with Siraj, interjected, 'Also, if he would have taken the catch, the game would have been too easy for us. Good game of us, no?' Gill's response left everyone laughing at the press conference. Siraj was also leading the Indian pace attack due to Jasprit Bumrah's absence. Bumrah was ruled out of the fifth Test, and initially, fans thought it was due to workload management, but recent reports claim that he sustained an injury.
