Leaders rally around trade unity: US tariffs dominate Asean talks

By: Bernama Text Size: Kuala Lumpur: As global trade tensions continue to rise, the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and Related Meetings wrapped up its four days of talks in Kuala Lumpur with the United States' (US) sweeping tariff hikes becoming a major talking point among regional leaders. The gathering, which convened foreign ministers, dialogue and sectoral partners and regional leaders under Malaysia's 2025 Asean Chairmanship, became a forum to recalibrate Asean's economic diplomacy amid shifting global trade realities. Just the day before the annual meeting kicked off on July 8, US President Donald Trump continued to shake the world with new tariffs ranging from 25 per cent to 40 per cent on 14 countries, including Asean economies. Trump also issued an executive order to extend the suspension of 'reciprocal tariffs' until August 1. Among Asean countries, several received lower tariffs than initially announced on April 2 – Vietnam's rate was reduced to 20 per cent from 46 per cent; Cambodia's rate dropped to 36 per cent from 49 per cent; Laos saw a decrease to 40 per cent from 48 per cent; and Myanmar's rate was revised down to 40 per cent from 44 per cent. Meanwhile, the US decided to maintain Indonesia and Thailand's tariff rates at 32 per cent and 36 per cent, respectively. However, the US has not yet announced final tariff decisions for the Philippines (17 per cent), Singapore (10 per cent), and Brunei (24 per cent). While Malaysia, once again being caught in the crosshairs of major power rivalry, was hit with a 25 per cent tariff effective August 1, a revision of one per cent upward from 24 per cent in April 2025. Despite this, Malaysia's Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who officiated the annual AMM, struck a pragmatic tone. 'Rubio stated that the letter was general, but Malaysia still has about one month to negotiate. He also acknowledged that Malaysia is a major trading partner of the US in this region, and will consider and present our views,' Anwar said after meeting with the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Parliament. Anwar's emphasis on maintaining Malaysia's neutral and independent foreign policy was equally clear by saying: 'No. While the US is an important trading partner, we will also strengthen our ties with China, Asean countries, and others to safeguard our people's interests and the nation's well-being'. For Asean, the message was similar but more strategic as Asean secretary-general Kao Kim Hourn revealed that a joint meeting between Asean foreign and economic ministers is planned ahead of the 47th Asean Summit in October to address the region's response to mounting global economic headwinds. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Singapore unveils upgraded Stars package to fast-track Timor-Leste's Asean membership

SINGAPORE, July 14 — Singapore on Monday launched the enhanced Singapore–Timor-Leste Asean Readiness Support (Stars) package to support the country's integration into the regional bloc and its long-term development. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the enhanced package will include tailored support to facilitate Timor-Leste's accession to key Asean agreements, specialised training in areas aligned with the country's national priorities, and leadership development programmes and scholarships for the next generation of leaders. 'Timor-Leste's upcoming accession to Asean is a significant milestone, both for your country and for Asean. 'Singapore looks forward to welcoming you warmly to the Asean family, and we will continue to stand with you on this journey,' Wong said at the official lunch he hosted in honour of Timor-Leste's Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao on Monday. Wong said Singapore launched Stars in 2002, a specially customised package to empower Timorese officials with the knowledge and skills needed for Asean membership. According to Singapore's Foreign Ministry, over 1,100 Timorese officials have, to date, participated in courses under the Singapore Cooperation Programme and the Stars package. Gusmao arrived in Singapore on Sunday for his second official visit to the city-state, which continues until Wednesday. He is accompanied by Vice Prime Minister, Minister Coordinator for Economic Affairs, and Minister of Tourism and Environment Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Bendito dos Santos Freitas. Timor-Leste is expected to be officially admitted as the 11th member of Asean at the 47th Asean Summit in October in Kuala Lumpur. In the Joint Communique issued following the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the ministers expressed their commitment to supporting Timor-Leste in expediting its early accession to key Asean economic agreements, in order to facilitate its full integration into the regional bloc. — Bernama

European shares fall amid fresh Trump tariff threat, autos lead decline

LONDON: European shares fell on Monday, led by automobiles, as US President Donald Trump's latest threat to impose steep tariffs on the European Union and Mexico kept investors on edge. The pan-European STOXX 600 index was down 0.5 per cent at 544.74 points, as of 0830 GMT. Other regional indexes also declined, barring the UK's FTSE 100, which was up 0.2 per cent. On Saturday, President Trump threatened to impose a 30 per cent tariff on imports from the European Union and Mexico, effective August 1, after weeks of negotiations with major US trading partners failed to yield comprehensive trade agreements. "The market is definitely taking the news negatively, but it's not pricing it are taking this with a pinch of salt and assuming that it's just the start of a conversation and that over the next few weeks the news flow will gradually improve", said Michael Field, chief equity market strategist EMEA at Morningstar. In response, the EU said on Sunday it would extend its suspension of countermeasures to US tariffs until early August and continue to press for a negotiated settlement. Italy's Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, said in a newspaper interview that the EU has already prepared a list of tariffs, worth more than 21 billion euros (US$24.5 billion), on US goods if the two sides fail to reach a deal. The EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic said that the EU will seek a favorable trade agreement with the US, while preparing possible countermeasures should negotiations break down. According to Field the EU is taking the right approach by being cooperative yet firm at the moment, noting "they're still playing hardball a little bit in saying that if push comes to shove down the line, we still have a plan." In the market, European automobile sector declined by 1.5 per cent following Trump's new tariff threats, with no indication of special treatment for autos, which remain subject to a 27.5 per cent duty. Carmarkers such as Porsche dropped 2.4 per cent, while BMW and Mercedes-Benz each fell 2 per cent. Volkswagen declined by 1.9 per cent Among individual stocks, Lifco slumped 9.1 per cent after the company missed second-quarter pre-tax profit. Conversely, AstraZeneca rose 1.8 per cent after the drugmaker said its drug Baxdrostat met all the main and secondary goals of a late-stage study in patients with uncontrolled or treatment-resistant hypertension. Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley downgraded their 2025 MSCI Europe local currency earnings per share growth forecast to -1.0 per cent from +1.3 per cent due to currency and tariff uncertainties.
