As the pan-European STOXX Europe 600 Index continues its longest streak of weekly gains since August 2012, driven by encouraging company results and gains in defense stocks, investors are keenly observing opportunities amidst mixed inflation data and economic contractions in major economies like Germany and France. In such a climate, identifying undervalued stocks can be crucial for investors looking to capitalize on potential discounts, especially when market uncertainties may offer entry points into fundamentally strong companies trading below their intrinsic value.

CNBC Daily Open: Wall Street disregards job losses to focus on cheaper shoes from Vietnam

If I had to choose between having a job and paying less for Nike shoes, you'd see me run barefoot to the office. Wednesday's market moves, however, suggested that Wall Street preferred the cheaper shoes. The U.S. economy lost private sector jobs in June, the first time hiring had contracted since March 2023, according to payrolls processing firm ADP. It's even more startling because a Dow Jones survey of economists had pegged job numbers to expand by 100,000. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on his social media site Truth Social that the country had made a trade deal with Vietnam, in which the Southeast Asian nation will face a 20% duty on imports to America. That means companies that rely heavily on Vietnam for manufacturing, such as Nike, Crocs and Lululemon, will face less onerous costs and might not hike prices as much, compared with the original tariff rate of 46%. After weighing both pieces of news, investors decided the good news was more important and lifted the S&P 500 to a new closing high. Granted, the ADP report has had a spotty track record in predicting the official job figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But it's still worth thinking about how that's a sign financial markets could be slightly disconnected from the real economy: Who can afford to buy shoes and pump up stocks if they don't have jobs? Vietnam strikes a deal with America. Imports from the Southeast Asian nation to the U.S. will be subject to a 20% tariff, while the U.S. gets tariff-free access to Vietnam's market, Trump announced Wednesday. The S&P 500 rises to close at a fresh record. The index also scored an intra-day high, while the Nasdaq Composite notched a record close. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index added 0.18%. U.K. bond yields jumped on turmoil in the Labour Party. The U.S. lost private sector jobs in June. Job losses amounted to 33,000, reported ADP on Wednesday. Economists polled by Dow Jones had expected an increase of 100,000 jobs for the month. Tesla reports a fall in second-quarter deliveries. The Elon Musk-led company delivered 384,122 vehicles in that period, a drop of 14% from a year ago. But Tesla shares still rose as the numbers were better than some investors had feared. [PRO] A weak jobs report could trigger a sell-off. If the numbers for June's nonfarm payrolls, out Thursday, is anything like the ADP report, the JPMorgan trading desk thinks U.S. stocks could tumble. A slowing economy meets a fast future Life in China these days is a story of stark contrasts. If in one conversation, my counterparts are wringing their hands over a sluggish economy, the next reveals how quickly artificial intelligence is revamping industries. While China's biggest cities are yet to see a return to the pre-Covid boom days, there are signs that smaller ones are experiencing rapid growth. Augmented reality glasses startup Xreal invested in its own factory in the southeastern "tier 2" city of Wuxi and earlier this year announced a new glasses product running Google's XR operating system.

Will Texas Longhorns sell advertising on their jerseys? LSU plans to boost NIL selling ads

Searching for a potential NIL edge, the LSU Tigers have announced they will sell a sponsorship patch on their iconic jerseys. The Baton Rouge Advocate reports LSU 'hopes the NCAA will allow schools to sell patches on their jerseys.' In the event the governing body clears it, the Tigers project they can generate 'multiple millions of dollars a year' doing so. The report says LSU has already identified an advertising partner and has decided out where the patches would go on every jersey, from cross country to football. LSU deputy AD for revenue generation Clay Harris says the program can generate millions a year. But he also says the ad emblem won't go overboard. "We don't have this as some crazy, NASCAR-like situation," Harris said. Not everyone is pleased with the plan. Of course, college football jerseys already have a couple forms of advertising on them already. First, there's the apparel maker's patch. Be it Nike, or Adidas or Under Amour, the jersey manufacturer makes sure their logo is easily visible. Adidas has even increased the size of its logos on jerseys in the English Premier League. Each college team also carries their conference logo. While that patch shows unanimity among conference member schools, make not mistake - it is an ad. International soccer clubs are the real trailblazers in jersey sponsorships. Almost all European teams have a jersey sponsor and it is front and center, the biggest logo on the entire jersey. The team's logo is typically relegated to a small patch on the left side. London club Arsenal, for example, makes $68.25 million dollars a year from Emirates Airlines. In the US, the NBA has had jersey advertising for eight years now. The NBA allows teams to sell one sponsorship patch placed on the front left shoulder of player uniforms. Teams make significant money from the ads, averaging $10.88 million per year. New NBA Champion Oklahoma City, for example, has a Love's travel shop patch. The NHL doesn't have jersey sponsors, but the league does allow helmet sponsors. One decision that needs to be made is the size and look of the patches. Will the sponsor try to match the team colors? Will LSU have a patch that actually clashes with its purple and gold? Where will the logo go? LSU has not shared their exact plan. Fans won't like the new advertising space, but if it is successful in Baton Rouge, you can bet more, if not all, teams will adopt the idea. Tradition be damned. The additional revenue stream has been discussed by athletic directors for over a year.

Year-old European startup Maisa named alongside Google and Amazon in elite list of leading AI agent vendors in top global US research reports by Gartner

SAN FRANCISCO & VALENCIA, Spain--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Maisa, a rising star of enterprise AI, has been named by leading global research and advisory firm Gartner in its list of leading vendors for developing reliable AI agents. 'We are delighted to be the first Spanish company included by Gartner in its reports and one of only two European companies in the category of AI agents. 'We are especially pleased to be listed alongside global tech titans such as Google and Amazon." Share Inclusion in Gartner's 2025 Hype Cycle for AI and Hype Cycle for the Future of Work marks the first time a Spanish startup has been mentioned in these influential reports. The company, which is barely a year old and made its first raise of $5m+ from leading US investors last year, now finds itself named alongside global giants Amazon Web Services, Google, Salesforce and LangChain. The Gartner Hype Cycle for AI Agents provides an overview of emerging technologies in AI, helping organizations navigate the evolving landscape of autonomous software agents. The Hype Cycle for the Future of Work provides CIOs with a crucial human-first lens on the transformative AI advancements and disciplines required to ensure success at scale. Maisa is one of two European businesses included in its field in the prestigious report. Its technology allows businesses to use agentic AI to create 'digital workers' who can undertake complex process automation tasks such as regulatory compliance, supply chain control and financial management. It has global clients in banking, automotive and energy. Maisa is unique in the field because its technology is hallucination-resistant. Its workings are traceable and there is a fully auditable trail - what Maisa calls its 'Chain of Work' - meaning businesses can confidently deploy it in critical functions, knowing they can pinpoint exactly how the AI is functioning. Maisa's CEO and cofounder David Villalón: 'We are delighted to be the first Spanish company included by Gartner in its reports and one of only two European companies in the category of AI agents. 'We are especially pleased to be listed alongside global tech titans such as Google and Amazon. 'Our vision and achievements in empowering companies with autonomous, trustworthy AI agents drive real business value and set new standards for intelligent automation.' The Gartner analysis highlights AI agents as rapidly maturing technology with a rare 'high benefit' rating, but points out that there is only a 5% - 20% market penetration to date, implying huge market growth potential. AI agents - defined as autonomous or semi-autonomous software entities capable of perceiving, deciding and acting to achieve goals - are set to revolutionise industries by automating complex tasks, enhancing decision-making and enabling new levels of workflow integration. About Maisa: A Rising Star in Agentic AI Its platform allows enterprises to create and manage AI-powered digital workers capable of automating complex, knowledge-intensive business processes with full transparency, traceability and reliability. It is simple to operate, fast to work and trustworthy. Maisa is enabled by a method the company calls 'HALP' (human-augmented LLM processing), which is a fast, no code and enterprise ready way to train digital workers. Instead of relying on massive datasets or manual programming, HALP enables digital workers to learn directly from real work inside organisations.
