G20 countries could produce enough renewable energy for the whole world – what needs to happen

The G20 group accounts for 67% of the world's population, 85% of global gross domestic product, and 75% of global trade. The member states are the G7 (the US, Japan, Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Canada), plus Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Russia, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.
We wanted to find out how G20 member states could limit global warming. Our study examined the solar and wind potential for each of G20 member countries (the available land and solar and wind conditions). We then compared this with projected electricity demands for 2050. This is, to our knowledge, the first research of its kind.
We found that the potential for renewable energy in G20 countries is very high – enough to supply the projected 2050 electricity demand for the whole world. They have 33.6 million km² of land on which solar energy projects could be set up, or 31.1 million km² of land on which wind energy projects could be set up.
This potential varies by geography. Not all G20 countries have the same conditions for generating solar and wind energy, but collectively, the G20 countries have enough renewable energy potential to supply the world's energy needs.
But for the G20 countries to limit global warming, they also need to stop emitting greenhouse gases. Recent figures show that the G20 countries were responsible for generating 87% of all energy-related carbon dioxide emissions that cause global warming.
On the other hand, African Union countries (apart from South Africa, which is a high greenhouse gas emitter), were responsible for only 1.2% of the global total historical emissions until 2020.
The G20 countries with the highest renewable energy potential (especially Australia and Canada) are major exporters of the fossil fuels that cause global warming. Along with every other country in the world, the G20 nations will need to end their human-caused carbon emissions by 2050 to prevent further climate change.
Where does Africa fit into the picture?
African countries cannot set up new electricity plants based on burning fossil fuels, like coal. If they do that, the world will never end human-caused greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The continent must generate electricity for the 600 million Africans who do not currently have it but will need to move straight past fossil fuels and into renewable energy.
For this, Africa will need finance. The African Union hosts the G20 summit later this year. This meeting begins just after the world's annual climate change conference (now in its 30th year and known as COP30). These two summits will give Africa the chance to lobby for renewable energy funding from wealthier nations.
Africa already has the conditions needed to move straight into renewable energy. The continent could be generating an amount of solar and wind power that far exceeds its projected demand for electricity between now and 2050.
Only 3% of Africa's solar and wind potential needs to be converted to real projects to supply Africa's future electricity demand.
This means that Africa has great untapped potential to supply the required energy for its transition to a middle-income continent – one of the African Union's goals in Agenda 2063, its 50 year plan.
But to secure enough finance for the continent to build renewable energy systems, African countries need long-term energy policies. These are currently lacking.
So what needs to be done?
The countries who signed up to the 2015 international climate change treaty (the Paris Agreement) have committed to replacing polluting forms of energy such as coal, fuelwood and oil with renewable energy.
South Africa, through its G20 presidency, must encourage G20 nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and support renewable energy investment in Africa.
Because financing the global energy transition is already high on the priority list of most countries, South Africa should push for change on three fronts: finance, sound regulations and manufacturing capacity for renewable technologies. These are the among the main obstacles for renewables, particularly in Africa.
Finance: Financing the energy transition is among the highest priorities for COP30. Therefore, the COP30 meeting will be an opportunity for the African Union to negotiate finance for its renewable energy infrastructure needs.
For this, fair and just carbon budgets are vital. A carbon budget sets out how much carbon dioxide can still be emitted in order for the global temperature not to rise more than 2°C higher than it was before the 1760 industrial revolution.
A global carbon budget (the amount of emissions the whole world is allowed) has been calculated, but it needs to be divided up fairly so that countries that have polluted most are compelled to limit this.
To divide the global carbon budget fairly, energy pathways need to be developed urgently that consider:
future developments of population and economic growth
current energy supply systems
transition times for decarbonisation
local renewable energy resources.
The G20 platform should be used to lobby for fair and just carbon budgets.
Sound regulations that support the setting up of new factories: Governments must put policies in place to support African solar and wind companies. These are needed to win the trust of investors to invest in a future multi-billion dollar industry. Long-term, transparent regulations are needed too.
These regulations should: say exactly how building permits for solar and wind power plants will be granted
prioritise linking renewable energy plants to national electricity grids
release standard technical specifications for stand-alone grids to make sure they're all of the same quality.
Taking steps now to speed up big renewable energy industries could mean that African countries end up with more energy than they need. This can be exported and increase financial income for countries.

Study finds people back climate policies when weather hits home
People are more likely to support climate policies when they believe extreme weather events are caused by climate change, a new international study has found. Published in Nature Climate Change on July 1, the study led by a team of international researchers, including one from Stellenbosch University, revealed that public support for climate action is simply not about experiencing floods, droughts, or heatwaves. Rather, what matters most is whether individuals believe these events are linked to climate change. 'Our data suggest that if individuals attribute extreme weather events to climate change, support for climate policies is higher regardless of whether the events are more frequent. The reverse causal relationship is also possible: people who are supportive of climate policies are more likely to attribute extreme weather to climate change.' The team collected data from 68 countries, using a mix of natural and social science data. Participants' experiences with extreme weather, such as floods, heatwaves and tropical storms, were compared with their support for climate policies like carbon taxes, sustainable energy and forest protection. Support was highest for protecting forested and land areas (82%) and increasing the use of sustainable energy (75%). However, proposals to raise taxes on carbon-intensive foods and fossil fuels drew the least support, with only 22% and 29% respectively backing them 'very much'. The study also found regional differences. 'Support for climate policies was particularly high in African and Asian countries, average in Australia, Costa Rica, and the UK, and below the global average in several European countries such as Czechia (Czech Republic), Finland and Norway.' Demographic differences also emerged. Men, younger people, the highly educated, those with higher incomes, religious individuals, and those with left-leaning political views were more likely to support climate policies. However, the link between extreme weather and policy support was not consistent across all events. While attribution to climate change played a key role in policy support for heatwaves and cyclones, the same could not be said for heavy rainfall. The study found a negative relationship between the number of people exposed to heavy precipitation and support for climate policies. 'Subjective attribution was relatively low for heavy precipitation. This corroborates previous findings that people often fail to link extreme rainfall with climate change.' This may help explain inconsistent findings in previous research. 'Few of these studies assessed whether participants linked these events to climate change, therefore missing a key controlling variable. Consequently, we strongly recommend that future studies assess subjective attribution.' The researchers referenced media coverage as a potential reason for this. A review of media reports from 10 countries between 2006 and 2018 found that extreme weather reporting mostly focused on hurricanes, storms, fires and other visible anomalies, and less on rain-related events. 'Countries more exposed to heavy precipitation might therefore be less willing to support climate policies because they are less likely to link those events to climate change,' said the researchers. Their analysis also showed that the negative effects of rainfall exposure on policy support were strongest among people who did not believe climate change caused those events. 'This further highlights the need for more research on climate change communication on types of extreme weather events that are not typically associated with climate change, such as heavy precipitation, as these events might serve as 'teachable moments'.' However, they cautioned that the relationship between rainfall exposure and climate policy support was not always significant, especially in exploratory models that considered additional variables like land area and climate change belief. 'This finding should therefore be interpreted with caution,' said the researchers. 'The researchers call for more studies about effective climate change communication on types of extreme weather events that are not typically associated with climate.'

Nzimande to table report to Cabinet on impact of US withdrawal of health funding
CAPE TOWN - Science and Innovation Minister Blade Nzimande said that the country had learnt the hard way not to rely so heavily on global partners for its scientific needs. He said that he would soon table before Cabinet a report on the impact of the withdrawal of health funding from the United States. Delivering his budget vote address in the National Assembly on Wednesday, Nzimande reflected on how unilateralism could affect the sector. In January, US President Donald Trump announced that he was pulling the plug on years of aid to South Africa and other nations for their HIV/AIDS treatment programmes. Minister Blade Nzimande said that in line with the country's foreign policy of multilateralism, his department was also looking to diversify its international partners to include countries from blocs such as BRICS, the European Union and the G20, as well as other developing nations of the global south. Nzimande said that one of his key focuses was to ensure a sovereign science and technology innovation system. "To depend on one polar of the world for our science system is a disaster, because if some people decide, because they are powerful, to withdraw partnerships and change, our system must not be left wanting." Nzimande said that South Africa must not only challenge genocide in Palestine in the International Court of Justice, but also develop partnerships with Palestinian researchers. "We must have collaboration with Palestine, so that the civilisation of the Palestinians is saved and is not destroyed by the kinds of destruction wrought upon by those great people by the Israeli apartheid regime." Nzimande said that the country would use its position as chair of the G20 to advance its priorities in science, technology, and innovation.

Houses made from rice: an eco-friendly revolution

(Photo by Guliza Urustambek kyzy / AFP) It may look like an ordinary building site but Akmatbek Uraimov's new house in Kyrgyzstan is being built with blocks of rice. The eco-friendly alternative to conventional construction materials is booming in the Central Asian country, which is vulnerable to global warming and grapples with water shortages. Before selecting the unorthodox material, Uraimov had researched other options, but concluded that the relatively cheap blocks made from rice husks were his best option. "In terms of insulation, cost, as well as for builders, it turned out to be convenient," said Uraimov, who lives in the village of Kyzyl-Kiya in southern Kyrgyzstan. "People didn't know about it. Now they see it, they are interested, they call," he told AFP. Nursultan Taabaldyev is one of the pioneers of the technology in Central Asia hailed as an environmentally friendly alternative to water-intensive concrete. In a workshop in his home region of Batken, rice dust was billowing into the air from the husks, the rough outer shell of rice which is normally thrown away or burned. Workers with protective masks over their faces were compressing the bricks before rushing to dry them, and helping clients load the finished blocks onto trucks. They are "made of 60 percent rice husks. The rest is clay, cement and a chemical-free glue," Taabaldyev said. When dry, they are as strong as cement thanks to silica naturally present inside the husks. "This idea came to me as a child, while doing carpentry with my father," said Taabaldyev. The 27-year-old has already built "300 houses" in five years - first with sawdust, then with rice. When he started, there was little robust research into the technology. That is starting to change. Several initial studies from various countries have highlighted the potential economic and environmental benefits of using rice blocks in construction. Crucially, they require less cement, which is responsible for approximately eight percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, according to 2023 figures from the World Economic Forum. In her village in a mountainous and arid region, Ykhval Boriyeva has also opted for rice blocks, praising their insulating qualities. Her house remains "warm in winter and cool in spring" thanks to its low thermal conductivity. "We save on coal. The walls retain heat and coolness well," she said. The material is also well within reach, with the Batken region producing a third of Kyrgyzstan's rice crop. "Rice waste is thrown into the fields, slowly burns, harms the environment, and is not used as fertiliser. So we decided to recycle it," Taabaldyev said. The problem of dealing with rice waste is even more acute in large rice producers like India. There "31.4 million tons of rice husks fill landfills and cause environmental problems," according to a study late last year published by Springer Nature. "Farmers are happy for us to remove rice waste because its accumulation creates a fire risk" in barns if ventilation is poor, said Taabaldyev. But as for the fire hazard to buildings made of rice, a regional official from Kyrgyzstan's emergency situations ministry said there was "no particular danger". Farmer Abdimamat Saparov is another who has welcomed Taabaldyev's innovative approach, pointing at the mounds of rice waste. "After harvesting and drying the rice, about 40 percent of waste remains, which we have no way of processing," said Saparov. Such abundance makes the blocks cheaper than ordinary building bricks - another crucial factor in southern Kyrgyzstan, where the average monthly salary is around $230. Cement is more expensive in Kyrgyzstan than anywhere else in Central Asia and the government is mulling adding it to a list of socially sensitive products, alongside bread and oil, that would allow it to dampen surging prices. Having proved the concept in the mountainous region, Taabaldyev dreams of industrialising production, expanding internationally and eyeing up even more potential materials. "I want to go to (neighbouring) Kazakhstan to make bricks from crushed reed and straw," he said. | AFP
