'All Space For Animals, None For Humans': SC Asks Petitioner Why He Doesn't Feed Strays At Home

The counsel said the petitioner was subjected to harassment and unable to feed community dogs in line with the Animal Birth Control Rules The Supreme Court on Tuesday questioned a petitioner, who alleged harassment over feeding of community dogs in Noida, why he does not feed the strays in his own house. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta was hearing a plea related to a March 2025 order of the Allahabad High Court. 'Why don't you feed them in your own house? We should leave every lane, every road open for these large-hearted people? There is all space for these animals, no space for humans. Why don't you feed them in your own house? Nobody is stopping you," the bench told the petitioner's counsel. The counsel said the petitioner was subjected to harassment and unable to feed community dogs in line with the Animal Birth Control Rules. Rule 20 of the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, deals with feeding of community animals and puts onus on resident welfare association or apartment owner association or local body's representative of the local area to make necessary arrangements for feeding of community animals residing in the premises or that area. The Supreme Court, however, observed: 'We give you a suggestion to open a shelter in your own house. Feed every dog in the community in your own house." The petitioner's counsel claimed compliance with the rules and said the municipality was creating such places in Greater Noida but not in Noida. He said feeding points could be made at a place not frequented by people. The bench then tagged the plea with a separate pending one on a similar issue. WHAT DID THE HIGH COURT SAY? In the high court, the petitioner sought directions to the authorities to implement provisions of the rules with due care and caution keeping in view the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. 'While protection of street dogs would be warranted in accordance with the provisions of the applicable statute, at the same time, the authorities will have to bear in mind the concern of common man, such that their movement on streets are not hampered by attacks by these street dogs," the high court said. The HC, therefore, expected the state authorities to exhibit 'due sensitivity" to the concerns of the petitioner and the public. It said the observation was necessary because there were many instances of attacks by street dogs on people of late, which has resulted in loss of lives and grave inconvenience to pedestrians. It disposed of the plea with a direction to the authorities to ensure that concerns highlighted by the court were duly taken care of and appropriate measures taken to ensure protection of strays besides ensuring interest of people on the streets was not jeopardised. On Camera, Elderly Man Drives Away Snake With Wooden Stick At UP's Ladli Ji Mandir

Last Updated: While some people saw the act as a precaution to protect devotees present at the temple, others raised concerns about animal cruelty. A video of a snake inside the Shri Ladli Ji Mandir in Uttar Pradesh's Barsana is gaining widespread attention online. The clip shows a snake, estimated to be around four to five feet in length, moving inside the temple premises. In the video, the snake is seen slithering through the open area of the temple as onlookers stand at a distance and observe its movement. An elderly man appears with a long wooden stick in hand. The man is seen attempting to push the snake out of the temple by using the stick. सांप की पूजा करने वाले देश में मंदिर में सांप घुस आया फिर देखिए कैसे उसकी पूजा की गई👇👇👇👇 — DJ_Mech1007 (@DJ_Mech1007) July 14, 2025 As the footage surfaced online, it triggered divided opinions across social media. While some people saw the act as a precaution to protect the large number of devotees present at the temple, others raised concerns about animal cruelty. A number of users criticised the move as they pointed to the religious importance of snakes in Hinduism. In many parts of India, snakes are considered sacred and are associated with various deities. One user remarked, 'In a country that worships snakes, a snake entered a temple, then see how it was worshipped." Another claimed, 'He is not a priest, he is a flower seller. The second thing is that our culture teaches us to behave well with all people. Everyone knows that a snake is venomous, and thousands of people visit the temple every day. If this snake had bitten someone, you people would have started defaming the temple." 'The snake was pushed to avoid stampede," a viewer pointed out. Someone else said, 'It's fine that the snake was driven away, but it could return again. That's why the snake-catching team should have been informed. It is the responsibility of those who manage the temple to ensure proper arrangements are made so that the snake doesn't come back and harm anyone. Public safety is important." Last July, a similar incident took place at the Baba Giddheshwarnath Mahadev Temple in Bihar's Jamui district. Devotees gathered there to perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva when they spotted a snake near the temple premises. view comments First Published: July 15, 2025, 16:32 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
