Man, 29, gunned down outside Brooklyn school he attended as child

Yahoo05-07-2025
A 29-year-old man was fatally shot outside a Brooklyn public school he attended as a child, as neighborhood Fourth of July fireworks obscured the sound of gunfire, officials and neighbors said.
The victim was standing outside the entrance of Public School 174, the Dumont School, on Dumont Ave. near Williams Ave. in Brownsville at about 11:45 p.m. Friday when he was shot in the chest, cops said.
The victim managed to get transportation to Brookdale University Hospital, where hospital staff found him at 1:30 a.m., said cops, who did not release his name.
Doctors scrambled to save him, but he died at the hospital a short time later, officials said.
A motive for the shooting was not immediately disclosed.
'We're working backwards from the hospital,' a police source with knowledge of the case said.
Cops on Saturday were scouring the area looking for surveillance footage near the school that could help them identify the shooter.
Yellow crime scene tape blocked off the entrance to the school.
Cops have yet to release the victim's name, but neighbors said he lived down the block and attended PS 174 as a child.
'He was such a sweet kid. He was beautiful,' said one neighbor, who wished not to be named. 'He went to school there.'
The victim's immediate family were too grief-stricken to talk Saturday. One relative said the victim 'kept to himself' and was 'always in good spirits.'
Neighbors said this part of Brownsville is usually quiet. No one heard the shooting because of all the fireworks popping off throughout the night.
The killing took place nearly three hours after the Macy's Fourth of July fireworks show lit up the night sky over the East River to the delight of thousands.
Police said no other homicides or shootings were reported on July 4. Last Independence Day, four homicides occurred, cops said.

A deputy has died after being shot during a domestic disturbance call in Kansas City, Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A sheriff's deputy has died after being shot multiple times while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Kansas City, Kansas, authorities say. Wyandotte County Deputy Elijah Ming, 34, and a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer were approaching a home at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday when a 38-year-old man inside opened fire, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said. A woman who lived at the house told authorities she was concerned about her safety and was trying to move out and asked law enforcement to come, saying the man had threatened friends with a firearm when they tried to help her move, the KBI said. The man and other sheriff's deputies and police officers exchanged gunfire as officers tried to help Ming, a nine-year veteran of the sheriff's department. Ming died several hours later of his injuries after being taken to a hospital. The man barricaded himself in the home and also was shot, though he was reported in good condition after being taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, the KBI said. Police negotiated with him for about an hour before he surrendered and was taken into custody.

Boy, 6, drowns after wandering away from family reunion at Belle Isle Park

A 6-year-old boy is dead after drowning in the Detroit River near Belle Isle Park on Saturday night, according to Michigan State Police. Multiple children, including the boy, were playing at Belle Isle Park during a family reunion. At one point, he wandered off from the other kids, police said. Family members started searching for the boy and called 911 after noticing he was missing, police said. The boy was found in the river near where the family reunion was taking place, around 30 minutes after he went missing. Officials with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan State Police attempted life-saving measures before the boy was taken to the hospital, where he later died. "Our heart goes out to this little boy's family and also the first responders and community members on scene who did everything they could to try and save this child's life," MSP First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said in a written statement on Sunday morning.
