Accused No 27: ‘Transported 50 kg gold' and more, what chargesheets against Nirav Modi's brother Nehal say

He is also Accused Number 27 in a chargesheet by India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that accuses him of destroying evidence to cover up a criminal conspiracy.
At the core of this conspiracy is his brother Nirav Modi, who is in jail in the UK, and over ₹13,000 crore in fraudulent loans taken from the government-run Punjab National Bank (PNB).

US authorities have arrested Nehal, 46, eight years younger to brother Nirav, on extradition pleas by India's Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), officials said on Saturday.
His next hearing is on July 17, when he may seek bail, which is expected to be opposed by US prosecutors, officials said, according to news agency PTI.
In the proceedings in the US, two charges are primary: of money laundering and criminal conspiracy.
The investigation agencies say Nirav Modi had, through his companies, embezzled ₹6,498 crore from PNB, while the remaining amount was misappropriated by his uncle Mehul Choksi in a similar modus operandi.
'Forced directors to lie, relocate'
Nehal laundered the proceeds of the crime on behalf of Nirav through a web of shell companies and offshore transactions, as per the ED.
He transported 50 kg of gold and 'substantial' cash from Dubai, the chargesheet says.
In a supplementary chargesheet submitted by the CBI, he is 'accused number 27' for destroying evidence in Dubai.
The CBI says Nehal Modi intimidated directors of Dubai-based shell companies used by Nirav Modi to 'give a veneer of legitimacy' to a fraudulent trade, PTI has reported.
These 'intimidated' people, employees of Nirav Modi's companies, were 'coerced' into relocating from Dubai to Cairo, during which their phones, laptops and computer servers were destroyed to erase evidence.

Birkenstock Cracks Down On Fakes In India, Agra Factories Raided: Report

Last Updated: The company's internal investigation reportedly found that fake versions of its popular sandals were being manufactured in rural areas near the tourist hub of Agra German footwear brand Birkenstock has launched a legal crackdown in India against suspected counterfeit sandals, leading court-appointed officials to inspect and raid several small factories, mostly around the city of Agra. The action comes after an infringement lawsuit filed by Birkenstock in May, according to people familiar with the matter told Reuters. The company's internal investigation reportedly found that fake versions of its popular sandals were being manufactured in rural areas near the tourist hub of Agra, home to the Taj Mahal, and sold both within India and overseas. The Delhi High Court is currently hearing the case. On May 26, Judge Saurabh Banerjee issued a confidential order, recently made public, appointing 10 local lawyers as court commissioners to carry out surprise inspections. These officials were given the authority to 'seize, pack and seal" products that allegedly copied Birkenstock's branding. The court order also included photographs of the suspected fake sandals and packaging submitted by the company. According to three sources familiar with the case, the raids have now been completed in Agra and New Delhi, and confidential reports have been submitted to the judge. The next hearing is scheduled for 6 October. Birkenstock, which did not comment on the case, is being represented by the Delhi-based law firm Lall & Sethi. The lawyers also declined to speak publicly, citing ongoing legal proceedings. In his order, the judge stated that the alleged fakes 'seem like a cheap knock off" and could easily mislead customers. 'The differences, hardly if any, are not something which can be discerned by the naked eye," he said. Birkenstock sandals, once associated with counterculture and worn by medical professionals and tech workers, gained renewed popularity after Margot Robbie wore a pink pair in the final scene of the 2023 film Barbie. In India, the brand's footwear ranges from $46 to $233. (With inputs from Reuters)

Ashish Shelar Compares MNS' Assault Over Marathi With Pahalgam Attack: ‘What's The Difference?'

Ashish Shelar said while terrorists had targeted tourists in Pahalgam based on their religion, people were being attacked in the state on linguistic lines, which was disappointing. Amid the ongoing language row in Maharashtra, state minister and BJP leader Ashish Shelar on Sunday triggered a row after he drew parallels between the recent attacks on non-Marathi speaking people in Mumbai and the April 22's Pahalgam terror attack, saying that the victims in both cases were 'Hindus". 'In Pahalgam, people were killed because of their religion. Here in Maharashtra, Hindus are being assaulted only because of the language they speak. What's the difference?" Shelar said while addressing a press conference in Mumbai as quoted by news agency PTI. He further said while terrorists had targeted tourists in Pahalgam based on their religion, people were being attacked in the state on linguistic lines, which was disappointing. 'All these incidents cause pain, suffering, and mental distress. In Pahalgam, they shot them after asking about their religion. And here they beat up the innocent Hindus just because of the language they speak. Such cases create disturbance…" he said as quoted by news agency ANI. #WATCH | Mumbai: On Marathi language row, Maharashtra Minister Ashish Shelar says, 'All these incidents cause pain, suffering, and mental distress. In Pahalgam, they shot them after asking about their religion. And here they beat up the innocent Hindus just because of the… — ANI (@ANI) July 6, 2025 In one of the biggest attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam on Tuesday, April 22, killing at least 26 people, including foreign tourists, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, claimed responsibility for the attack, although it later backtracked after massive global outrage. The minister further took a veiled attack on Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin and MNS chief Raj Thackeray, who reunited on Saturday at a joint rally for the cause of Marathi people, saying that the state is watching how some leaders are "enjoying other Hindus being beaten up". Shelar later asserted that the BJP would defend the dignity of Marathi people, and would stand by non-Marathi residents and ensure their protection. 'Marathi is not a political issue for us," he said. Referring to speeches made at the joint rally of Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, he said, 'As far as yesterday's program is concerned, one brother's speech is incomplete, and the other's is irrelevant. What Raj Thackeray said was not complete. He discussed Marathi, but did not elaborate on the entire topic." The Slapgate Row Shelar's remarks came amid heightened tensions following multiple incidents in Mumbai where workers of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) attacked shopkeepers and migrant workers allegedly for speaking Hindi instead of Marathi. Recently, a viral video showed a shopkeeper in the Mira-Bhayandar area being thrashed by individuals reportedly affiliated with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for allegedly refusing to speak in Marathi. In another incident, five MNS workers were arrested for vandalising the office of Mumbai-based share market investor Sushil Kedia's office in Worli after he declared he would not speak Marathi and dared the party chief Raj Thackeray. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier warned of strict legal action against those engaging in violence in the name of language. The row over speaking Marathi is escalating into a major political flashpoint ahead of the civic polls. Union Minister Backs Shelar Meanwhile, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale supported Shelar's statement, saying, 'Just as terrorists targeted tourists in Pahalgam based on religion, Raj Thackeray's party workers are attacking people asking them to speak Marathi." He also posed a question to Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray that 'if people from Hindu community are being attacked, would you sit quietly, do you not follow Balasaheb's line of thinking?" What's The Three-Language Row? The Hindi language row erupted after the BJP-led Maharashtra government issued a Government Resolution (GR) making the learning of the language compulsory in primary schools. Amid the growing backlash from MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT), the government amended the GR to make Hindi the "generally" third language before finally withdrawing both orders on June 29. The issue of Marathi identity and the "imposition" of Hindi is believed to be a catalyst for reuniting Uddhav and Raj Thackeray after almost 20 years on Saturday at a joint "victory" rally to celebrate the government's decision to scrap the GRs under the three-language policy. With elections to the high-profile Mumbai civic body and other municipal corporations approaching, the BJP waded into the language row, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserting that those resorting to violence over the Hindi language will face legal action. Addressing the joint rally, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray defended the Marathi pride, saying, We are goons if we have to do hooliganism for justice. On his part, Raj Thackeray asked the MNS cadres not to attack anyone over the language without provocation. DMK demands Tamil question papers for CBSE Class 10, 12 exams

Leader of the Opposition and DMK convenor R. Siva has demanded the provision of Tamil language question papers for the annual examinations for CBSE Classes 10 and 12. In a recent statement, Mr. Siva said students and parents were distressed by CBSE board examination papers for Classes 10 and 12 being issued only in English and Hindi. He sought bilingual question papers to start incorporating regional languages from the current academic year. The DMK leader also opposed the move to introduce tests to promote students of Classes 5 and 8. He feared that failing to clear these tests to move to the next class would negatively affect the confidence of students and could potentially trigger higher drop-outs. Pointing to Tamil Nadu's practice of promoting students up to Class 9, he urged the Puducherry government to replicate that model and to revert to a State syllabus. Reiterating his charge that the AINRC-BJP government had pushed through the implementation of the Centrally-framed National Education Policy in an ill-prepared manner, Mr. Siva said the lack of teachers for specific subjects, the delayed distribution of textbooks and uniforms and a lack of uniform access to libraries were impairing the academic performance of students. He also sought the appointment of specially trained teachers for children with disabilities and dyslexia. On NEET admissions, Mr. Siva demanded that the government disclose the details of admissions through the 10% quota for students who have studied in Government schools from Std I to Std XII in the Union Territory of Puducherry to higher education courses. Claiming that only 14 of the 37 seats in this category were filled in the previous admission cycle, the DMK leader urged the government to clarify the status of the remaining seats. The DMK would launch an agitation if the authorities continued to be negligent in safeguarding the interests of the student community and the welfare of teachers, he said.
