Ashish Shelar Compares MNS' Assault Over Marathi With Pahalgam Attack: ‘What's The Difference?'
Amid the ongoing language row in Maharashtra, state minister and BJP leader Ashish Shelar on Sunday triggered a row after he drew parallels between the recent attacks on non-Marathi speaking people in Mumbai and the April 22's Pahalgam terror attack, saying that the victims in both cases were 'Hindus".
'In Pahalgam, people were killed because of their religion. Here in Maharashtra, Hindus are being assaulted only because of the language they speak. What's the difference?" Shelar said while addressing a press conference in Mumbai as quoted by news agency PTI.
He further said while terrorists had targeted tourists in Pahalgam based on their religion, people were being attacked in the state on linguistic lines, which was disappointing.
'All these incidents cause pain, suffering, and mental distress. In Pahalgam, they shot them after asking about their religion. And here they beat up the innocent Hindus just because of the language they speak. Such cases create disturbance…" he said as quoted by news agency ANI.

In one of the biggest attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam on Tuesday, April 22, killing at least 26 people, including foreign tourists, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, claimed responsibility for the attack, although it later backtracked after massive global outrage.
The minister further took a veiled attack on Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin and MNS chief Raj Thackeray, who reunited on Saturday at a joint rally for the cause of Marathi people, saying that the state is watching how some leaders are "enjoying other Hindus being beaten up".
Shelar later asserted that the BJP would defend the dignity of Marathi people, and would stand by non-Marathi residents and ensure their protection. 'Marathi is not a political issue for us," he said.
Referring to speeches made at the joint rally of Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, he said, 'As far as yesterday's program is concerned, one brother's speech is incomplete, and the other's is irrelevant. What Raj Thackeray said was not complete. He discussed Marathi, but did not elaborate on the entire topic."

Shelar's remarks came amid heightened tensions following multiple incidents in Mumbai where workers of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) attacked shopkeepers and migrant workers allegedly for speaking Hindi instead of Marathi.
Recently, a viral video showed a shopkeeper in the Mira-Bhayandar area being thrashed by individuals reportedly affiliated with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for allegedly refusing to speak in Marathi.
In another incident, five MNS workers were arrested for vandalising the office of Mumbai-based share market investor Sushil Kedia's office in Worli after he declared he would not speak Marathi and dared the party chief Raj Thackeray.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier warned of strict legal action against those engaging in violence in the name of language.
The row over speaking Marathi is escalating into a major political flashpoint ahead of the civic polls.
Union Minister Backs Shelar
Meanwhile, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale supported Shelar's statement, saying, 'Just as terrorists targeted tourists in Pahalgam based on religion, Raj Thackeray's party workers are attacking people asking them to speak Marathi."
He also posed a question to Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray that 'if people from Hindu community are being attacked, would you sit quietly, do you not follow Balasaheb's line of thinking?"
What's The Three-Language Row?
The Hindi language row erupted after the BJP-led Maharashtra government issued a Government Resolution (GR) making the learning of the language compulsory in primary schools.
Amid the growing backlash from MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT), the government amended the GR to make Hindi the "generally" third language before finally withdrawing both orders on June 29.
The issue of Marathi identity and the "imposition" of Hindi is believed to be a catalyst for reuniting Uddhav and Raj Thackeray after almost 20 years on Saturday at a joint "victory" rally to celebrate the government's decision to scrap the GRs under the three-language policy.
With elections to the high-profile Mumbai civic body and other municipal corporations approaching, the BJP waded into the language row, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserting that those resorting to violence over the Hindi language will face legal action.
Addressing the joint rally, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray defended the Marathi pride, saying, We are goons if we have to do hooliganism for justice.
On his part, Raj Thackeray asked the MNS cadres not to attack anyone over the language without provocation.

Bengaluru: Days after his close aide asked people to choose either election guarantees or development while hinting at a lack of funds, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said that there was "no question" of changing the guarantee programmes. "There's no question of changing the guarantees programmes. It's for the poor from all communities and gives them economic and social security," he told reporters. Siddaramaiah's economic adviser, Basavaraj Raya Reddy, on Saturday told a public rally to choose between election guarantees and development. "This time, we are giving each MLA, even those from the Opposition, funds to build roads and bridges," the senior Congress leader said. The BJP seized on the opportunity to attack the Siddaramaiah-led government. "I think the government is bankrupt now. They are neither giving (election) guarantees nor building roads. They are not doing any development works and are just involved in corruption," Union Minister Prahlad Joshi, who is a Member of Parliament from Karnataka's Dharwad, told reporters.

Amid violence against Hindi-speaking people, Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Ashish Shelar on Sunday (July 6, 2025) drew parallels between the Pahalgam terror attack and the beating of "Hindus" in Mumbai in a veiled attack on the reunion of the Thackeray cousins. The senior BJP leader's remarks come amid an outrage caused by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists thrashing a sweet shop owner in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region for not speaking Marathi. On Saturday, MNS workers damaged the glass door of Mumbai-based share market investor Sushil Kedia's office in Worli after he declared he would not speak Marathi and dared the party chief Raj Thackeray. The row over speaking Marathi is escalating into a major political flashpoint ahead of the civic polls. "In the Pahalgam terror attack, people were asked about their religion [by terrorists] before shooting them. Here, people are being attacked based on their language, which is disappointing. "The state is watching how these leaders are enjoying other Hindus being beaten up," Mr. Shelar told reporters when asked about attacks on Hindi-speaking people allegedly by MNS workers. With MNS resorting to street-fighting over Marathi, actor and singer Dinesh Lal Yadav, popularly known as Nirahua, has dared the Thackeray cousins to drive him out of Maharashtra for speaking in Bhojpuri. "I am giving an open challenge. I do not speak Marathi. I speak Bhojpuri, and I am staying in Maharashtra. Why are you driving poor people out? If you have the courage then drive me out. Uddhav and Raj Thackeray shared a stage after nearly 20 years for the cause of the Marathi language and vowed to oppose the 'imposition' of Hindi in Maharashtra after the state government rolled back the GRs on the introduction of Hindi as a third language in primary schools. Slamming the BJP, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said the coming together of the Thackerays has unnerved ruling Mahayuti leaders, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Targeting Fadnavis who had claimed that Uddhav Thackeray delivered a 'rudali' (professional mourner) like speech at the joint rally, Raut said, 'Fadnavis and [Deputy CM Eknath] Shinde should start a weeping programme now [with the two Thackeray brothers coming together]'. After the rally, Mr. Raut said, leaders from several south Indian states, particularly Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, have asserted that they can fight the Centre and 'overthrow the imposition of Hindi". As the row over true custodians of Marathi escalated, Shiv Sena MLA and Maharashtra minister Pratap Sarnaik on Sunday credited Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for giving justice to Marathi manoos and ensuring classical language status for the Marathi language by following up with the Centre. In a letter to Mr. Shinde, Mr. Sarnaik stated that people are wise to understand that the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the MNS have come together to win power in the Mumbai civic body and not in the interest of Marathi. He said the Sena (undivided) controlled the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for 25 years and during this period, the Marathi manoos was driven out of the hotel industry, real estate, and gold and silver jewellery shops. "People are wise enough to know that they (Sena UBT and MNS) have come to win power in the BMC. Their [the Sena UBT's] soul is stuck in the coffers of the BMC. UBT's politics has been very selfish, fake and treacherous. Which is why UBT's colleagues are abandoning the party," Mr. Sarnaik said. "The MNS and the Sena (UBT) keep saying that they have come together in the interest of Marathi. So, for whose interest did they separate years ago? There is no love for Marathi, its culture and language, and Marathi manoos," he added. Mr. Shelar, meanwhile, said the attacks on Hindi-speaking people allegedly by MNS workers were disappointing and asserted "Marathi is not a political issue for us." BJP Lok Sabha MP from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut, on Sunday visited her rain-ravaged constituency and asserted that the way relief work is being undertaken, the Congress will not return to power in the state in even 20 years. She added that as an MP, she could only apprise the prime minister of the situation. 'I am deeply pained to see the plight of the people. They have lost family members, houses have been washed away, several people are still missing, but we can only console the families who have lost their kin, and now it is time to provide relief,' the actor said in Thunag panchayat, which was among several place in Mandi struck by a cloudburst incident on Tuesday. This was Ranaut's first visit to the affected areas of her parliamentary constituency since the disaster struck on June 30. Her visit comes two days after she publicly clashed with former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Jai Ram Thakur over the issue of disaster-affected areas. However, on Sunday, both were seen together visiting flood-hit regions in the Seraj Assembly constituency. During a press conference on Friday, Thakur had refused to comment on Ranaut's absence, saying he wouldn't speak about someone who seemed unconcerned with the people. In response, the MP accused him of advicing her not to visit the area until road connectivity was restored. On Saturday, Ranaut wrote on her X account about her scheduled Sunday visit to the affected areas. Ranaut on Sunday reiterated her Himachali and Pahadi identity. 'As a Member of Parliament, my responsibility is to secure funds and convey the ground reality to the government. I don't have an independent fund, officers, or a cabinet. I may not always be visible, but I'm a Himachali, a Pahadi, and I am here for my people,' she said. Taking a dig at the Congress government in the state, Ranaut alleged rampant corruption in the state administration. 'Even in the past, when the Centre sent thousands of crores in disaster aid, the state government misused those. I fear the same might happen again,' she said. 'We must find a way to ensure that relief directly reaches the affected families.' Speaking to the media, she highlighted the damage caused by the cloudburst. 'Thunag and surrounding areas have been severely hit. Roads are destroyed, and connectivity is disrupted. Our government and the administration are closely monitoring the situation, and relief operations are underway,' she said. She added that the Centre responded swiftly by deploying the Army for rescue and relief efforts. 'Though the Prime Minister is on a foreign tour, he is fully aware of the situation on the ground, and the central government has swung into action,' she said. The flood-like conditions in Thunag have left several villages isolated. Restoration of road connectivity remains a key challenge for the authorities. Ranaut and Thakur jointly assessed the damage, especially in Thunag town, where the fomer met with affected residents and expressed solidarity. She assured victims of all possible assistance from the Centre. 'I will demand a special relief package from the central government and advocate for the rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected families,' she said.
