Apple's 'F1' movie had a secret weapon at the box office — but it might not help next time

Apple's "F1" movie with Brad Pitt captured the checkered flag in its opening weekend.
The action film was boosted by a historically high revenue share from Imax screens.
Although Apple will celebrate this win, its next films might not get the same Imax lift.
Apple's flashy "F1" movie took first place at the box office this weekend, and it had a secret weapon: Imax.
The much-hyped racing film starring Brad Pitt exceeded expectations with a $144 million global debut, including a $55.6 million showing in the US. That's well beyond the $115 million it was forecast to rake in, per The Hollywood Reporter.
" F1" was boosted by Imax, which said on Monday that its premium screens generated $28 million for the film, or 19% of its worldwide box-office total. That's the fourth-highest share of global sales ever in a debut, behind only "Dune," "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol," and "Oppenheimer," an Imax spokesperson told Business Insider.
US movie-goers were especially likely to pay up for the premium Imax experience. Twenty-three percent of the domestic box office for "F1" was from those who paid to see Pitt in Imax's expanded aspect ratio. That's a similar share to what "Sinners" and "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning" made from Imax earlier this year.
Imax tickets cost significantly more than the typical stub. The going rate for an Imax ticket in early 2025 was $19.51, according to data from research firm EntTelligence cited by The Hollywood Reporter, which also found that the average US movie ticket was $13.82.
Similarly, BI found it can cost a whopping $31 to see "F1" in Imax in New York City.
Apple is surely thrilled to see such a strong start for "F1" — its first major theatrical hit — no matter how it happened.
But it may be too soon to say the Silicon Valley titan has figured out Hollywood. Its strategy of big-budget films with A-list talent hasn't exactly been a resounding success at the box office, as big bets like "Argylle" and "Killers of the Flower Moon" underwhelmed.
If Apple needs a legendary Imax run for its theatrical movie strategy to make sense, it may be hard to build on.

James Blake Brings ‘Sinners' Song to Cannes Lions

As players from the media and marketing worlds gathered in the south of France for the 2025 Cannes Lions conference, brands jockeying for visibility can be found up and down the Croissette where hosted 'beaches' draw both networkers and revelers. Offshore, however, are the ultra-exclusive events — among them, The Hollywood Reporter's Wednesday afternoon Marketing Power Players event. Held on the gargantuan Kismet yacht, owned by the Khan family, whose sports assets include the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, English Premier league club Fulham F.C. and All Elite Wrestling, the guest list included Activist Artists Management co-founder Bernie Cahill and Activate founder and CEO Michael J. Wolf, who co-hosted the event; Marcie Allen, president of Anzie Blue; Rare Beauty CMO Katie Welch; YouTube co-head creators and gaming Kim Larson; Dhar Mann Studios CEO Sean Atkins; The Macallan head of brand Sergio Cabello; and THR top marketers 2025 list members Bianca Franklin, global business developer, music at H&M, and Universal Music Group executive vp, global brand partnerships Kerri Mackar. Grammy-winning singer and songwriter James Blake performed two songs, including his latest, 'Séance,' from the soundtrack to Ryan Coogler's Sinners, which he co-wrote with two-time Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, who scored the movie and was also at Cannes Lions, serving as a featured speaker at Spotify's beachside headquarters. 'I leaned into the metaphysical love relationship between the two main characters, not the vampires,' said Blake, who also attended Cannes Lions as an official speaker, of the song, which was written before he saw the movie. 'It was actually quite spooky when I saw it, I could understand how it felt so pertinent to what I was writing about it.' Blake shared the spotlight with singer Monica Martin for one of her tunes, the wistful 'Go Easy, Kid.' Their harmonies, coupled with Blake's accompaniment, elicited enthusiastic applause from the intimate audience. Blake's partner, the actress Jameela Jamil, was also in attendance. Ahead of production on a new Ron Howard movie, she was promoting her podcast, Wrong Turns. Blake, meanwhile, has a new album coming out in October. But as much as the people were impressive — Tony Khan serves as founder, CEO, general manager and head of creative of AEW, the third-most valuable combat sports league in the world (behind UFC and WWE) — all eyes were on the details of this massive marvel at sea which was meticulously designed by Shad Khan, owner of the Jaguars, Fulham F.C., AEW and Flex-N-Gate. The eight-story super-yacht features a pool, an underwater theater, a helipad, multiple bars and dining areas, and designer furnishings in each of its well-apportioned guest suites. The father-son team was aglow in the success of AEW, which recently inked an extension with Warner Bros. Discovery that will keep its popular Wednesday Night Dynamite and Saturday Night Collision on TBS and TNT, respectively. 'Over six years, as things have evolved and entertainment has changed, we've been a staple of cable and continue to be a huge staple of TBS, which is a channel that's had wrestling in its lineup since the 1970s,' said Tony Khan. The numbers whiz name-checked CEO David Zaslav and CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels, along with WBD chief revenue and strategy officer Bruce Campbell, for being 'key supporters.' And while AEW's partnership with WBD has seen as many leadership changes in the six years they've collaborated, Khan added, 'We've come out stronger and stronger under the leadership of Warner Bros. Discovery. And now to be on such a prestigious platform as Max, that's a huge expansion for AEW to reach a new audience or even reconnect with fans that maybe cut the cord and didn't have access to TBS and TNT anymore.' Internationally, AEW has also become destination viewing on ITV, another network with a tradition of wrestling. 'We've been able to build that great linear audience and become the most-watched TV company of all wrestling with the biggest attendance,' said Khan. 'By most of the key metrics, AEW is the no. 1 wrestling company in the U.K.' No doubt the Khans are moving in super-exclusive circles. Aboard the Kismet the evening before were several major players in entertainment and beyond, including agency and Olympics 2028 head Casey Wasserman, Fox Corp. CEO Rob Wade, and former NBA stars Dirk Nowitzki and Blake Griffin. With AEW currently valued at $2 billion, it looks as if the son is following in the steps of his self-made father and at the same time expanding the empire. The younger Khan was heading to Mexico for AEW's first event in the country, which took place June 18, and he's also pushing his roster's brand extension to TV and film. Pro wrestler MJF, for instance, will appear in Happy Gilmore 2, the sequel to a movie he saw in the theater as a kid. 'Wrestling is the only 52 weeks-a-year sport,' adds Khan. 'It's a never-ending tour of all different cities and places. It's cool. I never stop.' Serial Killer Thriller Series ‘The Dark' From ITV Studios' Poison Pen Gets Green Light

ITV has commissioned a serial killer thriller series called The Dark from ex-BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson's Poison Pen. The series is adapted by Matt Hartley based on GR Halliday's debut novel From the Shadows. Poison Pen was launched by Stephenson under ITV Studios' production banner in 2023. Turkey's 'The Prince' Karlovy Vary Fest Has "Potential Far Beyond Film Industry": Majority Owner Rockaway's Jan Jirovec Locarno Unveils Lineup for Pardi di Domani Section, Its "Breeding Ground for Experimentation" When the body of a young man is found eerily staged in the idyllic Scottish wilderness, detective Monica Kennedy fears this is just the beginning of a terrifying campaign that will strike the heart of a rural community. 'As paranoia rises, suspicions and secrets are forced into the light, and the locals start to realise that there is a serial killer hidden amongst them,' a plot synopsis reads. 'With her experience of dealing with the darkest of humanity, Monica quickly becomes entangled in a heightened game of cat and mouse with a cunning killer,' it continued. 'But when her own history creeps up on her, she begins to lose trust in her own judgement. Will it be her own actions that are the biggest risk to herself and her family?' ITV's director of drama Polly Hill greenlit the six-part show. 'The Dark is a compelling new drama which introduces the fearless DI Monica Kennedy, who has to try and catch a serial killer in this really chilling Scottish story,' said Hill. 'Matt's adaptation is brilliantly gripping and I am delighted to be adapting this novel with him and the team at Poison Pen.' Stephenson added: 'The Dark is a gripping hide behind the sofa thriller with unguessable twists and a central character whose mysterious past gives her an extraordinary insight into a twisted killer as well as an overpowering empathy for those left in the killer's wake.' Stephenson, Preethi Mavahalli, Luke Woellhaf and Fern McCauley will executive produce alongside Matt Hartley. Matt Brown will be producing the series, which also has Lena Rae and Nessah Muthy writing and Gilles Bannier as lead director and executive producer. The Dark will commence filming in and around Glasgow during 2025 and is produced in association with ITV Studios, who will also distribute the series internationally.
