Pixar staff reportedly 'deeply saddened' LGBTQ elements were cut from studio's latest film, 'Elio'
Multiple Pixar employees are reportedly very unhappy with the theatrical cut of Pixar's latest film, "Elio." According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), staff at the beloved animated film studio, which is owned by Disney, are upset that LGBTQ elements of the film were removed before its final theatrical release. "It was pretty clear through the production of the first version of the film that [studio leaders] were constantly sanding down these moments in the film that alluded to Elio's sexuality of being queer," an anonymous artist who worked on the film told the outlet. Several Pixar staff members revealed to the outlet that "Elio" – the latest Pixar offering about a boy who is mistakenly beamed up from earth to interact with an intergalactic body of alien races – was heavily edited to be less overtly LGBTQ. "According to multiple insiders who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, Elio was initially portrayed as a queer-coded character, reflecting original director Adrian Molina's identity as an openly gay filmmaker," the piece stated. After Molina screened his cut of the film for Pixar leadership, the director exited the project. Rumors circulated that his post-screening conversation with Pixar COO Peter Docter "hurt" him. Molina was replaced by co-directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi. Elements cut from the film were said to include Elio performing in his own makeshift fashion show, his love for environmentalism, as well as scenes suggesting he had a crush on another boy. As the outlet noted, "this characterization gradually faded away throughout the production process as Elio became more masculine following feedback from leadership." Despite these changes, the movie became the worst box office bomb in Pixar's history, earning only $20.8 million domestically during its opening weekend. The movie cost over $200 million to make and had been delayed for about a year, after it was initially slated for release in March 2024. Sarah Ligatich, a member of Pixar's internal LGTBQ group PixPRIDE, told The Hollywood Reporter that she was "deeply saddened and aggrieved by the changes that were made." She added that there was an "exodus of talent" after staff saw Sharafian and Domee's cut of the film, noting that the exit was "really indicative of how unhappy a lot of people were that they had changed and destroyed this beautiful work." The anonymous artist characterized the changes to the film, telling THR, "Suddenly, you remove this big, key piece, which is all about identity, and Elio just becomes about totally nothing. The Elio that is in theaters right now is far worse than Adrian's best version of the original." Reports of "Elio" having its LGBTQ themes sanded down follow Pixar courting controversy for LGBTQ themes in its other films. Pixar's 2022 film "Lightyear" featured a same-sex kiss that was reportedly removed and then reinstated for the film's theatrical version. Pixar's 2020 film "Onward" features a female cyclops character who mentions her girlfriend at one point in the film. The anonymous Pixar artist called out company executives for the cuts to "Elio," saying, "I'd love to ask Pete and the other Disney executives whether they thought the rewrite was worth it. Would they have lost this much money if they simply let Adrian [Molina] tell his story?" Docter, Pixar and Disney did not immediately reply to Fox News Digital's requests for comment.

American Squid Game is 'in the works' with Mindhunter creator: Spoilers, cast and rumours of what to expect
We're still not quite over the ending of Squid Game season three, but the one thing that's keeping us going is that we might get to see more of those undeniably gruesome-yet-addictive games, with an American version of the show said to be "in the works". Last year, it was reported that Mindhunter creator David Fincher was working on an American Squid Game. An insider told Deadline that a new English-language Squid Game series was in the works at Netflix, with Fincher coming on to develop it. And following Cate Blanchett's Squid Game season three cameo, fans are more convinced than ever that it's happening. So will the be a Squid Game? What will it be about? And when is it likely to air? Here's everything we know so far. In October 2024, Deadline reported that David Fincher was developing an English-language version of Squid Game. Fincher has directed and produced many films including Gone Girl, The Woman with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. His TV credits include: Mindhunter and House of Cards. Squid Game involves dark themes and tones that are similar to the themes of Fincher's past works, particularly the 1997 thriller The Game, starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn. So, the producer and director would be ideal for the series. Dennis Kelly, best known for Utopia, is reportedly attached to to write, according to Playlist. An American Squid Game would mark the first English-language scripted Squid Game series, joining Hwang Dong-hyuk's original Korean-language thriller. The unscripted series Squid Game: The Challenge launched in Novemebr 2023 and has been renewed for a second season. Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk previously confirmed to TheWrap: "Season three is not going to be the end of the Squid Game universe". He added to EW: "I'm not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never." Meanwhile Lee Jung-jae, who portrays Seong Gi-hun, expressed his excitement over the alleged American adaption, telling Complex: "I'm looking forward to it so much, I can't wait to see it and I have high expectations." Multiple sources say that the American series will be a continuation rather than a brand new story and that it will be set in the same world as the Korean series. So, we can expect to see 456 Americans who are scrapped for cash finding their way to the secret location to battle it out in a series of games in a bid to win a life-changing sum of money, but at the risk of their's and their competitors' lives. Whether the games will be kept the same is yet to be confirmed, but we can expect to see lots of high-stakes drama, intense competition, and unique American twists that raise the tension even further. It's probably too early to say, but most sources seem to agree that the series is currently titled Squid Game: America and is reportedly set to begin production in Los Angeles as early as December 2025, as per ProductionWeekly. Fincher is currently tied up for the remainder of 2025, working on the follow-up movie to Once Upon A Time in Hollywood with Quentin Tarantino behind the script, so 2026 seems like a more realistic deadline. We'll update you right here once we know more. Cate Blanchett's Squid Game cameo has led fans to believe that the American series is definitely going ahead. In the final scenes of the third instalment of the Netflix thriller, the Front Man (Lee Byung-hu) finds himself in a car in Downtown Los Angeles. While stopped at a light, he hears the sound of two ddakji tiles hitting ground, followed by a sharp slap. He rolls down the window to see a suited Cate Blanchett playing ddakji with a man. Asked why he decided to cast the Australian actress, Hwang Dong-hyuk said: "We thought having a woman as a Recruiter would be more dramatic and intriguing. "And as for why Cate Blanchett, she's just the best, with unmatched charisma. Who doesn't love her? So we were very happy to have her appear. We needed someone who could dominate the screen with just one or two words, which is exactly what she did." It's not yet known if Cate will be signing on for the US version of the show, but the legendary actress, who is known for her roles in The Lord of The Rings, The Hobbit, Black Bag and more, would be a much welcome addition. Squid Game seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix.

SQUID GAME Creator Still Torn on Season 3 Finale, but the Cast Says It's a Wild Ride — GeekTyrant
With Squid Game Season 3 marking the end of Netflix's biggest series, fans were met with a conclusion that will no doubt spark conversations. But, the show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, admits he's still wrestling with how he feels about the final moments. He said: 'Even when I was writing season 3, I had to make a big decision at the end of the season. Because it's a finale of the whole series, the whole show. 'That decision was so difficult to make. I'm still thinking whether it's good or not, but the audience, the viewers will see. I cannot spoil that.' That's not exactly a confidence boost, but not all the voices involved are as uncertain. Series lead Lee Jung-jae, who plays Seong Gi-hun, believes Hwang landed exactly where he needed to. 'I thought that director Hwang's decision that he had made, he was very determined, and he knew what he was doing, but I'm sure that he went through a lot of internal debate and struggles.' Lee pointed out the unique challenge of ending a cultural phenomenon like Squid Game , especially with a character as layered as Gi-hun. 'Because, as we all know, it's just a hugely successful series. So when it's a story that big, how do you bring that to closure as director, writer, and creator? And especially for a character like Gi-hun, where do you leave his journey?' He also revealed that Hwang didn't make that call in a vacuum. 'He listened to a lot of other people's ideas as well. We would have discussions among ourselves, among the cast. He would also discuss it with me and the crew as well. 'But I believe that director Hwang came up with the most adequate, the most unpredictable, the most meaningful, and the most intriguing and entertaining ending possible. 'So personally, I am very happy with the finale, and you all are going to be able to see where it all ends soon, but I can guarantee you it's not going to be what you think.' And then there's Lee Byung-hun, who plays the mysterious Front Man, adding: 'Director Hwang keeps saying it's a finale, but when I first read it, I felt it could be a finale, [but] at the same time, it could be a new start. I'm not sure about that, it's my personal opinion, but if the audience's love and support increases, we never know what happens.' Whether it's truly the end or just the beginning of something else, Squid Game Season 3 is now streaming on Netflix. If you watched it, what did you think about the end?
