
Four Moroccan Scientists Rank Among World's Top 200 Researchers
The index tracks the impact and quality of scientific research across multiple disciplines.
Abdesalam Hamada, a researcher at Hassan II University in Casablanca, leads the list of Moroccan scientists. He ranks 40th globally for his outstanding contributions to nuclear research, as recognized through his work with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).
The list also includes two other notable researchers: Idris Ben Shakroun, who ranks 131st worldwide, and Farida El Fassi, who holds the 169th position. Notably, El Fassi is the first Moroccan woman to enter the top 200 scientists list.
Raja Cherkaoui El Moursli, a nuclear physics professor at Mohammed V University in Rabat, also made the list at 182nd place globally.
Beyond these four scientists, six other Moroccan researchers appear among the top ten at the national level. They come from diverse scientific fields, including nuclear physics, electrochemistry, and sustainable agriculture.
This strong Moroccan showing reflects the growing presence of the North African country's researchers on the international scientific stage, showing their contributions to advancing knowledge in precise and influential fields.
The recognition comes as Morocco continues to invest in higher education and research infrastructure.
The country's universities and research institutions have increasingly collaborated with international organizations, leading to more impactful scientific publications and discoveries.
Recently, the Private University of Fez announced a partnership with Arizona State University to establish the American International Institute, a new hub for dual-degree education in Morocco and the wider region.
In April 2024, Mohammed V University (UM5) of Rabat and the Complutense University of Madrid signed a cooperation agreement, aiming to bolster academic and scientific cooperation as well as cultural exchange.
These achievements elevate Moroccan scientists' vital work with international peers to address global challenges and push the boundaries of scientific understanding.

Casablanca's Oncorad Publishes 1st African Prostate Cancer Research in Leading U.S. Journal
Rabat – The Casablanca-based Oncorad Group has become the first cancer treatment center in Africa to publish research in 'Advances in Radiation Oncology,' in partnership with the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). The featured study, carried out by Oncorad's research team at the Le Littoral Clinic, explores a combined treatment protocol for aggressive prostate cancer, integrating high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy with external beam radiotherapy. Conducted on a cohort of more than 120 patients, including several international cases, the research demonstrated a 92% remission rate with no significant toxicity. These results are consistent with the highest global standards in cancer care. The project was developed by a multidisciplinary Moroccan team led by principal investigator Dr. Hamza Samlali and coordinated by Dr. Najlaa Assaid. The medical physics team included Youness Khobbaizi, Omar Hanicha, Mahdi Abou El Houda, and Sanaa Nabil, under the leadership of Professor Redouane Samlali, founder of Oncorad Group.
