Joburg's MMC leads crackdown on illegal occupiers in the CBD

Six undocumented foreign nationals were detained by Home Affairs officials and immigration officers following a raid led by the City of Johannesburg MMC for Human Settlement, Mlungisi Mabaso.
Mabaso, who was in the company of officials from Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Public Safety officials, Home Affairs representatives, and other officials, conducted a high-impact blitz raid on the illegally occupied AA House Building in the CBD on Tuesday morning.
The focus of the raid in the city centre was on several JOSHCO-owned buildings to improve service delivery, safety, and operational efficiency.
Mabaso indicated that this proactive raid comes on the back of the influx of foreigners who are dominating the rental market in some of the government-owned buildings in the city centre.

He added that the raid underscores the city's commitment to enhancing service delivery, ensuring safety, and supporting the economic empowerment of our communities through effective management of JOSHCO's commercial properties.
"We have already arrested six undocumented foreigners during this raid, and because the majority of our buildings and most of our hijacked buildings are being occupied by foreign nationals, whenever we requested to intervene, we are told to provide alternative accommodation to evacuate.
"We are confronted by those challenges as we are unable to do anything with them. We cannot even demand their immigration statuses. That is why we have Home Affairs here with us today and other departments," he said.
Mabaso indicated that the operation aims to create a safer, more vibrant Johannesburg where residents can enjoy quality services and opportunities for growth.
This operation comes hot on the heels of a similar operation which took place early last month, which targeted Textile House and African Diamond — both located on the corner of Kerk and Goud streets.

Those living nearby were quickly collected, but many children relying on transport were left unattended, exposed to open trenches and scattered construction equipment that posed serious safety risks. Yolanda Base, a distraught grandmother, shared her anguish over her granddaughter's recent injury on school grounds. A sharp piece of construction debris cut the child's ear, a frightening incident that could have been far worse. 'They took her to the clinic, and thank God it wasn't worse, but she got hurt at school, a place where she's supposed to be safe. It breaks my heart. They don't care about us or our children. This staggering overcrowding creates an unmanageable and unsafe learning environment. Community leader and mother of two, Shedean Bennered described the mobile classrooms as structurally unsound. 'Some of the mobile classrooms are broken, without windows, and the wooden floors wobble when you walk in. Imagine 60 children packed inside those. It's a disaster waiting to happen, yet our kids are expected to learn there,' she said. Construction delays have prolonged exposure to dangerous conditions, including exposed electrical wiring and open trenches across the school grounds. On top of this, parents revealed another recent safety incident: a learner was hit by a car outside the school gates, a tragedy they attribute to poor security and lack of vigilance. Parents also raised concerns about academic delays, with many learners yet to receive second-term report cards. 'Only about 20% of our kids can read properly. The rest are struggling, and nothing is being done,' one parent lamented. Frustration with the Department of Education's handling of the crisis is mounting. Many parents questioned why learners were not relocated to safer schools during construction, accusing officials of negligence that endangers children and disrupts learning. Image: Supplied Further fueling anger are allegations against the school's principal, accused of weak leadership and allowing teachers to arrive late without consequences. Parents claim the principal regularly drinks at a local tavern, undermining trust in his ability to manage the school effectively. 'Our children are suffering in dangerous, overcrowded classrooms while the principal shows no leadership,' a parent said. 'He's out drinking while we're fighting to protect our kids' futures. How can we trust a system that doesn't care if our children are safe or learning?' The Rabie Ridge community is demanding immediate intervention. They want learners moved to safer facilities while construction continues, the principal removed, and stronger oversight to ensure the safety and quality of education. Speaking to The Star, Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department is aware of the issues at Dulcie September Primary and has taken steps to address them, with classes set to resume on August 4. Mabona explained that the contractor completed the relocation of mobile classrooms within the set timeline, clarifying that their responsibility was limited to moving the structures, not performing repairs or upgrades. He added that the department has appointed professionals to monitor the work and ensure it meets the necessary standards. He further stated that there are no open trenches, and visible wires are safe. Some trenches were caused by the theft of school materials. It is important to note that trenches were at some point created by some community members who stole some materials from the school.' Mabona said. He added that The MEC's office has been actively involved throughout and continues to engage with the School Governing Body. Man arrested for killing 13-month-old baby and injuring mother in Mankweng
A 13-month-old baby girl tragically killed in Mankweng after being run over by a pickup van driven by her mother's ex-boyfriend. Image: Supplied A 35-year-old man has been arrested in Mankweng, Limpopo, for allegedly killing a 13-month-old baby girl and severely injuring her mother by deliberately driving over them with a pickup van. The horrific incident occurred on the evening of July 26, around 8.05pm, when the mother and her baby were reportedly waiting for a taxi to Segopye village. Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the suspect, believed to be the woman's ex-boyfriend, approached them and 'started to have a heated argument with her.' Despite the escalating confrontation, a taxi soon arrived and the woman, clutching her child, quickly boarded. However, the drama didn't end there. As they were en route, the taxi driver reportedly warned the mother that a pickup van was following closely behind. When they got off at Marothi (Makwalaneng) Cross, tragedy struck. Tragically, the baby girl later succumbed to her injuries, while the mother sustained significant leg wounds. Police have since registered a case of murder and attempted murder. The suspect appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Monday. Jacobs was granted the bail on Monday by the Bellville Magistrate's Court, nearly a month after she was arrested for Imaad's kidnapping. Jacobs is facing charges of kidnapping and defeating the ends of administrative justice. On Monday, Imaad's mother, Imaan Sharmar, was too emotional to speak with the media and had to be consoled by a relative by the bail decision was handed down. Once she regained her strength on Monday, Sharmar told the Cape Argus that she stood firm on her truth about what happened and was disappointed in the justice system. 'I strongly believe that the man above doesn't sleep and he has his plans ready. "I do feel like the amount of bail granted was quite little as it made me feel like that was my child's worth,' she said. Magistrate Gconbani Ndaleni granted Jacobs the R4 000 bail with strict conditions, which include that she may not visit Mitchell's Plain or Strandfontein, refrain from making contact with witnesses, and sign in at a designated police station. Jacobs's friends and former work colleagues came out in support of her, describing her as a caring individual who had marital issues and was not a monster.
