Now, fans are rediscovering this lesser-known truth about the 63-year-old star, and their reactions are a mix of disbelief, amusement, and admiration.
The Name Change Was Personal, Not Just PR
Cruise's decision to drop his birth name wasn't just about marketability. It was deeply personal. Born to Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer, and Mary Lee Pfeiffer, a special education teacher, Cruise grew up in near-poverty under a strict Catholic household. But what truly shaped his decision was the complicated and painful relationship he shared with his father.
In a 2006 interview with Parade Magazine, Cruise described his father as 'a bully' and 'a coward.'

'If something goes wrong, they kick you… make you feel safe and then, bang!' he said. 'There's something wrong with this guy. Don't trust him.'
At 18, when he left home to chase acting dreams in New York City, shedding the name Mapother symbolized more than just entering showbiz. It was an emotional severance—distancing himself from a painful past and choosing a new identity built on his own terms.
The revelation, though public knowledge for decades, recently resurfaced online and sent fans into a frenzy. Some joked the name sounded 'like royalty,' while others weren't as complimentary. One user on X (formerly Twitter) quipped, 'Rolls off the tongue… straight into a history class.'
Another confessed: 'Mind blown. I've been a fan for years and never knew this!'

Cruise's Career Is Anything But Quiet
While fans dwell on his roots, Cruise is soaring toward the future—quite literally. His next high-octane entry in the Mission: Impossible series, The Final Reckoning, hit theaters in May 2025. He's also starring in Alejandro G. Iñárritu's upcoming comedy Judy, scheduled for release in 2026, and gearing up for Top Gun 3, Broadsword, and the rumored Days of Thunder 2.

My Oxford Year Ending Explained: The Heartbreaking Goodbye For Anna
Last Updated: Based on the novel by Julia Whelan, the film revolves around Anna, a driven American who has just graduated from Cornell and has a high-paying job waiting for her. Netflix's latest film, My Oxford Year, has struck an emotional chord with viewers for its gripping narrative and strong performances. Starring Sofia Carson as Anna, and Corey Mylchreest as Jamie, the movie begins just like any other typical rom-com but slowly transforms into a heartfelt tale about love, life and the choices that shape our journey called life. If you have watched the film and found yourself teary-eyed by the end, trust us, you are not the only one. With that in mind, here we take a look at the powerful ending of the film. Based on the novel by Julia Whelan, the film revolves around Anna, a driven American who has just graduated from Cornell and has a high-paying job as a financial analyst waiting for her at Goldman Sachs. But before she begins that fast-paced life and takes that gig, she decides to take a year off to study poetry at Oxford, a passion she has always had. It is during that phase that she meets Jamie, her poetry professor. Although their first meeting is anything but smooth but soon, they soon fall in love with each other. Anna Discovers Jamie's Cancer Just when everything seems perfect, Anna discovers that Jamie is hiding something. He is battling an aggressive, incurable form of cancer and the devastating moment changes everything for both of them. Jamie, who does not want to burden Anna with the responsibility of caring for a dying person, urges her to return to the US and follow her dreams. 'Anna, I want this more than anything, but this is madness. I fear that you'll regret it," Jamie says. Anna, on the other hand, has made up her mind as she replies, 'I'm of the opinion that you should never regret the things you do," she responds, telling him that he is staying in Oxford with Jamie. The Heartbreaking Goodbye Anna and Jamie spend one final night together, but the next morning, she finds him unresponsive. He is taken to the hospital, and it becomes clear that his condition has worsened. The doctor reveals Jamie has a critical case of pneumonia, as the chemotherapy has weakened his immune system. While he suggests further treatments, Jamie's father resists. In an emotional moment, she finally agrees to let his son go peacefully, respecting his wishes not to suffer any longer. Later, Anna and Jamie spend a quiet moment imagining a European adventure, a trip they always dreamed of taking. In a beautiful montage, the film shows them visiting all the places they talked about. But in the middle of the dream sequence, Jamie vanishes, leaving Anna alone on the beach – a heartbreaking, subtle way to show that Jamie has passed away. A New Beginning For Anna The story does not end on a sad note, though. Anna chooses to continue their dream trip, visiting each destination alone but carrying Jamie in her heart. That's how she decided to honour his memory while embracing life. In the final scene, Anna is back at Oxford and this time, as a teacher. She is now leading the same poetry class Jamie once taught. In a touching nod, she now starts the class the same way he did with a Victoria Sponge cake. 'Poetry can be taught, but really it should be lived," she says. Inside Arpita Khan's luxe Mumbai restaurant: Rs 10k lamb, Rs 8.5k pasta, French champagne worth around Rs 2 lakh, and a ceiling that changes with time of day
A few months ago, Salman Khan's sister Arpita Khan ventured into the restaurant space and opened her new restaurant — Mercii — in Mumbai's posh Santacruz area. The restaurant, sprawling over 9,000 sq ft, soon became a popular spot among celebrities, with paparazzi frequently spotting several Bollywood A-listers at the venue. Arpita co-owns the restaurant with Ketul and Gaurav Parikh, and Anuj and Vicky Chugh of Richboyz Hospitality and Richboyz Entertainment. Mercii, which means 'thank you' in French, is known for its fine-dining experience and focuses on bringing authentic European flavours to its diners. The restaurant is located on the lower level, and since there isn't any natural light source, one might expect it to feel enclosed — but that's far from the case. The space makes a grand impression, thanks to its innovative transitioning ceiling, which uses different lighting to set the mood according to the time of day. For instance, during the day, the ceiling mimics an artificial skylight that gives a warm, sunlit glow — perfect for brunches and lunches with family. At night, the lighting transforms into a nightscape, creating an glamorous and intimate dining atmosphere. Speaking about the transitioning ceiling and how the idea came to her, Arpita told Curly Tales, 'When Carl, our designer from Creative Clinic (Dubai), suggested the ceiling as a concept, it's something that immediately caught my fancy. With the immersive ceiling, we are able to change the lighting and mood of the ambience at Mercii. And, this helps us create a vibe. It also adds to the expanse and makes the place look more dramatic and larger than life.' The interior decor of the restaurant gives it a palatial charm, with a jharokha-style effect created through thoughtful lighting and small sitting corners that resemble shamianas. The restaurant is furnished with cozy yet edgy chairs and tables, along with plush, comfortable sofas. A massive bar and DJ area form a focal point of the restaurant. There's also a private section that can accommodate up to 30 guests, complete with a separate bar to serve that space exclusively. Mercii has culinarian Deniss Koll as its Group Culinary Director. Deniss has previously worked at high-end restaurants in Dubai. Speaking about how Arpita brought him on board for the restaurant, she said, 'So, to be honest. Chef Dennis is the choice of my partners Ketul & Gaurav. We met a lot of chefs and did tastings, too. But something or the other was not the way we would have liked it to be. Then, one of Ketul & Gaurav's friends — who is also a chef from a very famous restaurant in Dubai and who had worked with Deniss closely — suggested him. When he came to Mumbai and gave us a trial we figured that his heart and culinary skills were in the right place and his cooking was great, too.' A post shared by Mercii India (@mercii_india) Mercii serves meticulously curated authentic European cuisine, with Asian and Indian components integrated in some dishes. During an interaction, Arpita admitted that she wanted to open a multi-cuisine restaurant but with a very thoughtful and single-target approach. She also shared that her favourite dish on the menu is the four-cheese pizza known as Quattro Formaggi, which costs Rs 1,100. Other pizzas are also priced between Rs 800 to Rs 1,100. The restaurant's most expensive dish is the Herb Crusted Lamb Loin, which is priced at Rs 10,000. It's also one of their signature dishes. Another signature offering — the Truffle Pasta on Wheel — costs Rs 8,500. The Teriyaki Salmon, another popular item, is priced at Rs 4,000. Mercii also has an extensive wine and liquor menu. It serves champagne imported from France, with some bottles costing up to Rs 1,88,550. White wine Prosecco can cost up to Rs 50,000, while the most expensive white wine on the menu is priced at Rs 69,000. The highest-priced red wine is listed at around Rs 1,40,000. Cocktails are moderately priced between Rs 900 to Rs 1,200.
