Update: The 'miracle' of Comrades runner Moira Harding

Earlier this month the South African community at large was gripped by the story of Comrades runner Moira Harding, who was reported missing after completing the ultramarathon in Durban, before eventually being found more than 12 hours later in a critical condition.
The 54-year-old was largely unresponsive, in a critical condition and hypothermic when she was found by construction workers after battling some inclement weather conditions throughout the night.
Harding was found near the National Sea Rescue Institute base in The Point area of Durban, and was quickly airlifted to a hospital in Umhlanga where she has received extensive treatment for dehydration, hypothermia and other related conditions.
After lengthy periods under sedation, the latest information gathered by The South African reveals that Harding has made encouraging recovery progress, and should be discharged from hospital this week.
One of the mysteries that has remained is just how Harding ended up so far from the finish at the People's Park in Durban, although there have been some suggestions that the chaotic, crowded and poorly controlled finish could have contributed to her being led astray.
However, Harding had fortunately been wearing an 'in case of emergency' (ICE) bracelet with her emergency contact details when she was found, apparently lying on her back near Durban's harbour.
In the latest update, it's believed that Harding walked as far as an additional 10km after the run, but despite passing through a Durban area that is known to be dangerous – particularly at night – she was said to have been found unharmed and without any valuable belongings missing.
It's understood that Harding in fact walked in circles, seemingly disoriented, for quite some time before collapsing just a short distance away from the edge of the harbour water.
The manner in which she was found, as well as her recovery from a critical condition, has been described as a 'miracle', with Harding soon expected to begin her rehabilitation out of hospital.

Breakthrough in DJ Sumbody case as four suspects are arrested

Four men, including one suspected of ordering the hit on Oupa John Sefoka, widely known as DJ Sumbody, have been arrested. The multi-talented DJ was tragically gunned down in a hail of bullets in November 2022, sending shockwaves across the country. On Monday, 21 July 2025, the SAPS announced a major breakthrough, confirming the arrest of four key suspects in the high-profile case. Gauteng's top organised crime unit, working closely with the SAPS Political Killings Task Team, successfully apprehended four key suspects. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the national police spokesperson, said that officers arrested the suspects in Gauteng on Monday afternoon. Three of the suspects are believed to be the hitmen, while the fourth is suspected to be the mastermind who orchestrated and ordered the fatal attack. Police also said they found the weapon used in the shooting and confirmed its link to several other murders. The suspects are facing charges that include murder and conspiracy to commit murder. General Masemola said the breakthrough is critical and expressed hope it would bring long-awaited closure to grieving families. 'Well done to the teams that have been piecing together evidence since November 2022. This is a culmination of hard work and dedication to justice. This is one of those complex cases that our teams needed to take their time in ensuring a thorough investigation so that we could ultimately bring a strong case before the court', said Gen Fannie Masemola. TIMELINE OF EVENTS: THE DJ SUMBODY MURDER CASE DJ Sumbody died in a hail of bullets on November 20, 2022, in Woodmead, Johannesburg. Shortly after, by late 2022, police began gathering ballistic evidence and investigating possible motives related to his brutal murder. Subsequently, in 2023, investigators transferred the case to the SAPS Political Killings Task Team as its complexity increased. Then, by mid-2024, new forensic evidence surfaced, revealing firearm links to several other murder cases under investigation. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE ARRESTS? Fake attorney jailed for posing as legal practitioner in court

A 43-year-old man who falsely represented himself as a legal practitioner has been sentenced to six years in prison by the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Rustenburg. Johannes Tebogo Motse operated for months without registration, deceiving multiple clients and forging legal documents to support his fraudulent activities. Between February and November 2022, Motse illegally appeared in courtrooms as a legal practitioner and took on cases despite having no legal credentials. Furthermore, he went as far as forging a fidelity fund certificate, an admission certificate, and a right of appearance certificate to make his claims convincing. One victim paid Motse R15 000 to file an appeal, but never received any legal service. Additionally, when the client realised the appeal had not progressed, they contacted the police. Investigators quickly uncovered that Motse was not registered with the Legal Practice Council of South Africa. Motse pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud, one count of theft, two counts of forgery, and two counts of uttering. The court also grouped the fraud, forgery, and uttering charges and imposed a six-year direct prison sentence. He received a two-year suspended sentence on the theft charge, provided he repays the R15 000 to the complainant by 31 August. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act. Advocate Matshidiso Ramakgaphola stressed that such crimes are growing frequently and must be dealt with firmly. The Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, welcomed the ruling and praised the state advocate for her work. 'These sentences underscore the NPA's commitment to combating bogus legal practitioners and protecting the integrity of the legal profession and the public,' said Dr Makhari. Violent behaviour in primary schools

JOHANNESBURG - A new study by UNISA senior lecturer Dr Julie Rubbi Nunan highlights a troubling increase in violence, bullying, and vandalism in South African primary schools a trend that is severely affecting teaching and learning. Dr Nunan, who specialises in early childhood development, says a zero-tolerance approach to these behaviours is essential. She also stresses the importance of equipping teachers with the skills to manage learners effectively. With many children coming from traumatic backgrounds, Nunan believes schools must adopt positive and supportive strategies to assist learners in a meaningful way.
