
Potholes dot city, but NMC repairs roads outside Hyderabad House
Ironically, the upkeep of Hyderabad House falls under the state Public Works Department (PWD), but it was the civic body that carried out the repair work.
Soon after, on June 25, NMC shut its hotmix plant for the entire monsoon, citing seasonal restrictions. The plant will now remain closed until September 30. "In its absence — Jet Patcher and Insta Patcher — have been roped in for temporary pothole filling," an official from the department confirmed.
However, their limited capacity has raised concerns, especially as complaints continue to pour in from across the city.
Zone-wise data accessed by TOI shows a worrying trend. While May saw a dip in complaints at 249, June recorded a spike with 525, nearly matching April's 550. Mangalwari zone topped the list with 159 complaints in June, followed by Dharampeth (82), Laxmi Nagar (70), and Hanuman Nagar (54). Even zones like Satranjipura, which saw zero complaints in April and May, reported 18 last month.
The deteriorating condition of roads — especially in the city's peripheral areas — has become a major concern. Many of these stretches fall under the jurisdiction of the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) and state PWD, but citizens say both agencies have abdicated responsibility.
Legislators too have voiced their frustration. Several MLAs are pressuring NMC's hotmix department to take up immediate repairs rather than getting the work either through the District Planning and Development Council (DPDC) or from the concerned road-owning agencies.
"The financial burden on NMC is increasing because neither NIT nor the state PWD is acting. Yet, the same NMC resurfaced roads outside Hyderabad House which isn't even its responsibility," said a senior civic official.
The decision to prioritise a VIP address while regular citizens struggle with crater-ridden roads has sparked anger. Motorists are facing daily ordeals on pothole-laced stretches, with waterlogging adding to the danger during rains. "This is nothing but misuse of civic machinery for VIP comfort," said former corporator Manoj Sangole. "If the PWD couldn't maintain roads outside CM's secretariat, why should NMC's limited resources be diverted, especially during the peak of road damage season?"
Road repairs in outer areas — including Narsala, Dabha, Wathoda, and Hudkeshwar — continue to remain neglected.
Even the state PWD reportedly failed to maintain stretches under its jurisdiction across the city. With monsoon showers intensifying and pothole numbers rising daily, residents fear a complete collapse of road infrastructure unless urgent interventions are made.
The glaring mismatch between civic priorities and ground realities has become impossible to ignore — with NMC once again facing public criticism for failing to serve its core constituents.

Barapullah flyover phase 3 project: Got nod to fell trees, work will start soon, says PWD
The last hurdle in the way of completion of the long-delayed Barapullah Phase 3 flyover has now been cleared with the Public Works Department (PWD) receiving permission from the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to fell 250 trees that are required for the project to progress, officials said on Wednesday. 'We have received in-principle approval for felling of trees from the CEC,' said a senior PWD official. 'As the CEC has given permission to fell trees, work on the ground will start soon. The trees are located near the Humayun's Tomb stretch and near Mayur Vihar,' the official added. The CEC is a five-member committee formulated by the Supreme Court to monitor afforestation and tree-cutting permissions in big projects. The project will be completed within six months after the permission to fell the trees is granted, PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh had earlier said. Singh has also said that the government plans to operationalise the project by December. The Barapullah Phase 3 project – a 3.5-km elevated corridor – envisages seamless connectivity between Mayur Vihar I in East Delhi and AIIMS in South Delhi. The new flyover, which will merge with the existing Barapullah flyover at Sarai Kale Khan, is also expected to significantly enhance east-west connectivity. Once operational, the flyover is likely to ease traffic congestion at key choke points, such as Nizamuddin Bridge, Bhairon Marg, Ashram Chowk, and Ring Road. The Phase 3 project was approved in 2014 and launched in April 2015 with a target to complete work in 2017. The initial cost of the flyover was Rs 964 crore, but the sanctioned cost significantly increased over the years. 1 2 Nagpur: Tucked away in the densely populated Sakkardara locality, the resting place of Gond King Bakht Buland Shah — the founder of Nagpur — lies in quiet decay. Over 300 years after the legendary ruler laid the city's foundation, his grave and those of 27 royal family members are finally poised for long-overdue care and attention. On Wednesday, the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) floated a tender for a Rs6.70 crore development and beautification project for the site, which is a Grade-I heritage structure. The royal family graveyard, spread over half an acre in Azam Shah Layout, has suffered years of neglect, with tombs crumbling, thick vegetation overgrowth taking hold, and rampant encroachments on all sides. The proposal was reviewed on Wednesday in a meeting of the Heritage Conservation Committee (HCC), chaired by Anoop Kumar. Sources from the meeting said that a comprehensive discussion happened on NIT's proposal and HCC has suggested some changes in the former's plan. "HCC and Kumar were of the opinion that Bakht Buland Shah's memorial should be preserved properly, so some changes have been proposed and it would be discussed in the next meeting," said sources, adding that NIT proposed to build a hut over the grave of Shah, which was objected to by HCC members. Historical records place the original construction of the mausoleums in the early 17th century. Despite its rich legacy, the site has rarely seen conservation efforts. Encroachments, untrimmed vegetation, and structural damages have worsened over the years, making restoration an urgent necessity.

Petitioners fined Rs50,000 for own encroachment on Ring Road
Nagpur: The Bombay high court's Nagpur bench dismissed a public interest litigation on Wednesday that sought action against encroachments along the city's Ring Road after discovering that the petitioners had illegally constructed commercial buildings on the targeted land. Justices Nitin Sambre and Sachin Deshmukh ruled the PIL 'devoid of bonafides' and motivated by personal gain. The court fined petitioners Mangala Wakode and Rajashri Gajbhiye Rs50,000, directing the amount to be donated to the Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU) for animal welfare and veterinary services. The petitioners complied with this order. Filed by counsel Tushar Mandlekar, the PIL aimed to remove encroachments on govt land from Omkar Nagar to Shatabdi Chowk in Mouza Babulkheda. However, Sangeeta Jachak, counsel for the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), disclosed that the petitioners had made unauthorized constructions on neighbouring residential plots.
