The Los Angeles Lakers have been heavily in the NBA rumor mill over the last week. Most of those rumors have been connected to the future of superstar forward LeBron James.
James decided to opt into the final year of his contract with the Lakers, which will pay him just over $52.6 million during the 2025-26 campaign. However, it seems that the two sides could part ways sooner rather than later.
While there is still a chance that James plays out the final year of his deal, trade rumors have been swirling around the longtime superstar aggressively. He has been connected as a possible trade target for multiple times and the team seems heavily motivated to cut ties with him.

Right after the move was made, the front office started making it clear that Doncic was the player they were going to build around.
Los Angeles seems to want to move on from James as soon as it can. If that is the case, he might not even play out the upcoming season with the Lakers.
That being said, one NBA analyst has spoken out with strong criticism for how Los Angeles is handling the situation.
During a segment on "First Things First," Nick Wright spoke out strongly about the direction the Lakers seem to be heading.
"I don't know why the Lakers seem to be in a rush to get out of the LeBron James business," Wright said. "I don't expect the Lakers to find a player better than LeBron James to replace LeBron James this year or next year."
He makes a very valid point. On the outside looking in, keeping James would seem to be the better move if the franchise wants to win now. Los Angeles could win with Doncic and James leading the way if it makes the right moves.

Parting ways with James would take away a player who averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and a steal per game last season. Even at 40 years old, James is still one of the most dominant players in the NBA.
It will be interesting to see what happens between James and the Lakers throughout the rest of the offseason. Moving on from him seems to be the path that Los Angeles wants to take, but he still could finish out the final year of his contract and then head elsewhere or retire.
Only time will tell, but the entire situation has been quite strange.

Cavaliers Named New Favorites to Land LeBron James After Mavericks Report

Cavaliers Named New Favorites to Land LeBron James After Mavericks Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After picking up his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, LeBron James is once again entering a contract year with the Los Angeles Lakers. As has been the case for the last few years, there is still a big question mark regarding James' future in Los Angeles. James is turning 41 years old in December, and there have been rumors about him possibly wanting to leave the team. To this point, there have been no concrete reports about what the Lakers star's future with the team will look like. However, it seems that there is one team to keep an eye on: the Cleveland Cavaliers. After being drafted first overall by the team in 2023, James had two separate stints in Cleveland from 2003-2010 and 2014-18. During his time with the Cavaliers, the Ohio native led the team to their first-ever NBA Championship in 2016. He last suited up for the team over seven years ago, but a return could be possible. According to BetUS, the Cavaliers (+350) are the betting favorites to acquire James if he leaves the Lakers. Previously, the Dallas Mavericks were the betting favorite to trade for the four-time champion. However, per the latest reports, the team is not interested in "gutting its roster" in order to acquire him (h/t Dan Woike and Joe Vardon of The Athletic). "One team linked to James — the Dallas Mavericks — does not have interest in gutting its roster to match James' salary in a trade, a team source told The Athletic," Woike and Vardon wrote. Last season, James and the Lakers lost in the first round of the playoffs at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves just a couple of months after trading for Luka Doncic. As the Lakers look to establish themselves as title threats, they will need their top stars to bring their A-game. Whether James will be around to help the team achieve their goal, however, remains to be seen. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 16, 2025, where it first appeared.

Myles Turner reveals the real reason he left Pacers for Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks have been one of the most active teams this offseason, and they might have made the most shocking deal. On the second day of free agency, there was little buzz in Milwaukee outside of rumors of Giannis Antetokounmpo's future. That changed drastically when the Bucks reportedly agreed to a four-year deal with Pacers big man Myles Turner. Turner had spent the first 10 seasons of his career in Indiana and just helped the team make the NBA Finals. Despite all of that success in Indiana, Turner, one of the league's top free agents, made the shocking decision to go to Milwaukee. Turner recently went on SiriusXM NBA Radio to discuss his decision to move to Milwaukee. While he said Tyrese Haliburton's injury played a minimal factor in his decision, Turner made it clear why he ultimately made his decision. 'I feel that Milwaukee valued me a bit more, and I think that they tried a little bit harder,' Turner said. 'But at the end of the day, it's not for me to discuss right now, out of respect for [Indiana], out of respect for my incoming organization. It was an interesting process.' While Turner has taken the high road at every opportunity, his unwillingness to speak about his negotiations with the Pacers speaks volumes. Although it does seem true that both sides were ultimately interested in sticking together, the Pacers simply didn't give Turner the offer he desired. The impact of this move for both franchises is yet to be determined, but the Bucks at least have a quality center to pair with Antetokounmpo entering next season.
