Chow-Ramasamy defamation mediation resumes July 2
P Ramasamy initiated defamation proceedings against Chow Kon Yeow on July 18 last year over a Facebook post which he claims seriously harmed his reputation.
GEORGE TOWN : The Penang Court Mediation Centre has fixed July 2 for a further mediation session between chief minister Chow Kon Yeow and former deputy chief minister P Ramasamy in connection with defamation proceedings linked to the disputed Batu Kawan land deal.
Ramasamy's lawyer, Shamsher Singh Thind, confirmed that an e-review is scheduled for tomorrow before sessions court judge Helmi Ghani to provide an update on the proceedings.
'The new date was fixed as both parties need to confirm something.
'Today is the second mediation session after the first one on April 14,' he said.
Chow also confirmed that mediation is ongoing, with the next session scheduled for July 2.
'Today's mediation involved defamation suits stemming from the cancelled land deal between Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Umech Land Sdn Bhd.
'Ramasamy filed the first defamation suit against me, while PDC filed the second suit against him,' he said.
Today's session was presided over by mediator S Selvaranjini, with V Sithambaram representing both Chow and PDC.
The mediation concerns remarks made by Chow about the now-scrapped land transaction between PDC and Umech Land.
Ramasamy initiated defamation proceedings against Chow on July 18 last year over a statement published on the latter's official Facebook page on Oct 3, 2023, which Ramasamy alleged gravely damaged his reputation.

MOSCOW, June 28 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has concluded his eight-day working visit to Uzbekistan and Russia, marking a pivotal step in Malaysia's renewed efforts to strengthen strategic international partnerships. The visit focused on the potential revival of Malaysia's nuclear energy programme, alongside collaboration in the halal economy, tourism, energy investments and Islamic finance. A key milestone was the signing of a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) between MyPower Corporation, a special-purpose agency under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), and the Russian state atomic energy agency Rosatom. The agreement paves the way for potential cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology, as Malaysia re-evaluates its long-term energy strategy. As Malaysia advances its National Energy Transition Roadmap, nuclear energy is being seriously considered as a reliable, clean baseload option to diversify the energy mix and achieve long-term climate and energy security goals. Malaysia previously had a robust nuclear development agenda, including plans to commission two nuclear power plants by 2021. However, these plans were shelved, and the Malaysia Nuclear Power Corporation was disbanded in 2018. Today, amid increasing pressure to decarbonise and diversify its energy sources, nuclear energy is once again under consideration as a viable low-carbon option. Petronas had exited Uzbekistan in 2013, but new opportunities in exploration and upstream development have emerged as Uzbekistan seeks to revitalise its energy landscape. Tourism ties were boosted by AirAsia X's launch of direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Tashkent, operating three times weekly. Recognising the potential to further enhance travel and trade, Fadillah encouraged AirAsia X to expand its route to include Samarkand, a historic Silk Road city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering added value for both leisure and cultural tourism. ‘We're staying': Five Malaysians in Iran decline evacuation, says foreign minister
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Five Malaysians — four students and a trader — remain in Iran and have signed declarations opting out of evacuation efforts, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said today. According to Utusan Malaysia, the foreign minister said the individuals had expressed their gratitude to the Malaysian government and Wisma Putra, but chose to remain in the conflict-affected country. 'The four students decided not to return. They signed the declaration and thanked the Malaysian government and Wisma Putra,' he said after officiating the annual general meeting of the Penajes Women's Cooperative in Rembau today. 'They told us they have chosen to stay.' Mohamad said the evacuation of Malaysians from Iran was completed at midnight on June 21, involving 24 citizens and one Singaporean. 'There are not many Malaysians in Iran. In contrast, Qatar has over 5,000 Malaysians. 'Thankfully, since the US base in Qatar was bombed, there have been no further attacks. The airspace has reopened and Malaysians in Qatar are safe,' he added.
