Chow-Ramasamy defamation mediation resumes July 2
P Ramasamy initiated defamation proceedings against Chow Kon Yeow on July 18 last year over a Facebook post which he claims seriously harmed his reputation. GEORGE TOWN : The Penang Court Mediation Centre has fixed July 2 for a further mediation session between chief minister Chow Kon Yeow and former deputy chief minister P Ramasamy in connection with defamation proceedings linked to the disputed Batu Kawan land deal. Ramasamy's lawyer, Shamsher Singh Thind, confirmed that an e-review is scheduled for tomorrow before sessions court judge Helmi Ghani to provide an update on the proceedings. 'The new date was fixed as both parties need to confirm something. 'Today is the second mediation session after the first one on April 14,' he said. Chow also confirmed that mediation is ongoing, with the next session scheduled for July 2. 'Today's mediation involved defamation suits stemming from the cancelled land deal between Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Umech Land Sdn Bhd. 'Ramasamy filed the first defamation suit against me, while PDC filed the second suit against him,' he said. Today's session was presided over by mediator S Selvaranjini, with V Sithambaram representing both Chow and PDC. The mediation concerns remarks made by Chow about the now-scrapped land transaction between PDC and Umech Land. Ramasamy initiated defamation proceedings against Chow on July 18 last year over a statement published on the latter's official Facebook page on Oct 3, 2023, which Ramasamy alleged gravely damaged his reputation.

Penang has enough land to meet industrial demand for next 15 years, CM says amid RM13b in Q1 investments
GEORGE TOWN, June 20 — Penang has sufficient land to meet industrial needs in the state for the next 10 to 15 years, according to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. He said today there was a perception that the state is short of industrial lands but in reality, the state still has lands that can be developed for use. 'Land is not an issue, currently, we have about 809.4 hectares (2,000 acres) of land in the pipeline in varying stages of completion,' he told reporters after launching the Penang Industrial Masterplan 2030 at Eastin Hotel here. He said the Batu Kawan industrial park that is about 404.7 hectares (1,000 acres) took about 15 years to be developed since 2008. Chow said the demand for industrial land was also not that high. 'On average, about 40.47 hectares of land are needed in a year,' he said. So the 809.4 ha of land will take a long time to be filled up, he added. He explained industrial lands do not only refer to new lands but included those being reclaimed, under request for proposal process and several other development stages before it can be used. He said not all new investments require new lands, as some are reinvestments by existing plants that are merely adding new facilities in the remaining sites of their plants. 'There were also other investors such as from China who prefer to start operations as soon as possible,' he said. He said these group of investors will buy existing unused plants or lease it from the previous owner. Additionally, he said there are private developers that are constructing new factories to be sold or leased to investors. 'So, not all investors need new lands, there are so many different types of investments that contribute to the state's economy,' he said. When asked about the revenue recorded by the state as a result of the sale of industrial lands, he said the revenue generated was minimum as it was not the state's main focus. 'What's important is the value of investments being brought in,' he said. He said in the first quarter of this year, Penang recorded investments totalling RM13 billion. Meanwhile, on the industrial masterplan, Chow said it is the way forward for the state to transform the state's industrial sector and strengthen its position as the Silicon Valley of the East. He said the masterplan considered important infrastructure projects such as the Penang International Airport expansion and development of a green and smart technology hub for the electrical and electronic sector.

Soil depression detected at Jalan Batu Kawan in Penang, authorities close off affected section, begin urgent repairs, says state exco
BATU KAWAN, June 6 — A soil depression was detected yesterday at P149 Jalan Batu Kawan, specifically at the junction connecting the road to a newly completed bridge, according to Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari. He said the exact cause of the incident is still under investigation by the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and the project contractor. However, immediate remedial measures were taken by PDC upon receiving public complaints. 'PDC promptly carried out premix patching to raise the road level and installed warning signs to prevent any untoward incidents involving road users,' he told Bernama when contacted. He said the contractor will proceed with excavation work to determine the root cause of the soil depression before implementing permanent repair measures, which will involve the use of additional materials such as geotextile, basal reinforcement, and other necessary strengthening methods. 'These actions are essential to ensure long-term road stability and to prevent future soil depression. All repair costs would be borne by the contractor because the project is still within the defects liability period (DLP,' he said. Meanwhile, Assistant Director of the Fire and Rescue Operations Division of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) in Penang, John Sagun Francis, said a team of seven members from the Batu Kawan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was sent to the location after the department received a call regarding the soil depression. On arrival, the team found that a soil depression had occurred, but there were no victims involved. Immediate action was taken to close off the affected area and ensure no vehicles were allowed on the compromised section of the road,' he said. The incident gained public attention yesterday after a social media post went viral, showing images of the soil depression along the main road near the Batu Kawan bridge. The post also highlighted visible cracks on the concrete structure dividing the road. Firefighters were seen at the location, placing safety cones and taking precautionary measures to secure the area for road users. — Bernama
