Shots fired as Punjab village drug chase ends in violence; 2 cops, 3 villagers injured
A police team, responding to a drug complaint received on their helpline, was allegedly attacked in Ghaaia village, Dasuya, 200km from Chandigarh, leading to the registration of a case against the village sarpanch, her husband, a former sarpanch, and 25 others on attempted-murder and other charges.
According to the FIR, ASI Sarabjit Singh and head constable Sukhdev Singh arrived in the village after an alert received at 8.30pm that one Sukhwinder Singh was selling heroin in the area.
The ASI said he contacted former sarpanch Bhupinder Singh, whose wife Kuldeep Kaur currently holds the sarpanch position.
"When I asked about the person selling drugs in the village, Bhupinder replied that it was none of my business," the ASI says in the FIR, alleging that when he began to film an inebriated Bhupinder, he was assaulted, and his mobile phone thrown away. When he resumed filming, Bhupinder and his wife allegedly tried to snatch his phone and incited other villagers, claiming police were asking about Sukhwinder.

ASI alleged that he was assaulted, his turban pulled down, and his uniform torn. Two residents, Niranjan Singh and Harwinder Singh, tried to snatch his service pistol, says the FIR. "During the scuffle, four bullets got fired from my pistol. They hit the ground and then struck the feet and legs of the accused," he stated. Head constable Sukhdev Singh was also allegedly beaten and injured.
Police filed a case against Kuldeep Kaur, Bhupinder, five other named individuals, and 20 unidentified people. Charges include attempt to murder, voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing official duty, and obstructing a public servant in the discharge of public function.
Dasuya DSP Balwinder Jaura confirmed that the two injured officers are being treated at Dasuya Civil Hospital, while three villagers sustained injuries from bullet splinters.

Team Amritpal to challenge MP's continued detention under NSA in SC
Amritsar: Team Amritpal has decided to challenge the imposition of the National Security Act (NSA) against Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh for the third time in the Supreme Court . The team also expressed resentment over Amritpal's continued solitary confinement in Assam's Dibrugarh Jail, even as nine other persons who were detained alongside Amritpal at the high-security prison had already been shifted to Punjab. Advocate Imaan Singh Khara, legal counsel for Amritpal Singh, informed that he recently met the Lok Sabha member from Khadoor Sahib at Dibrugarh Jail and following the meeting, they have decided to file a petition in the Supreme Court under Article 32 of the Indian Constitution seeking protection of Amritpal Singh's fundamental right to personal liberty and quashing of the third NSA order imposed on him. Amritpal Singh's detention under the NSA was extended for the third time on April 23. Imaan Singh also lamented that Amritpal Singh remained in solitary confinement, even as the other detainees had been transferred to different jails in Punjab. Out of the other nine detainees, four have been transferred to Bathinda Jail, three to Patiala Jail, and one each to Amritsar and Ropar jails, he said. It all began in Feb 2023, when Waris Punjab De activists, led by Amritpal Singh, stormed Ajnala police station under the cover of Guru Granth Sahib demanding the release of their associate Lovepreet Singh Toofan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Are You From Bangladesh? Such was the attack that the DSP required 18 stitches. In response, the police on March 18, 2023, launched an operation to apprehend Amritpal and after a month-long manhunt, he was finally arrested on April 23, 2023, from Rode village in Moga district. A senior member of the Team Amritpal, meanwhile, informed that Amritpal had not only given consent to contest the ensuing Tarn Taran byelection under the banner of Akali Dal Waris Punjab Dae, but also called upon the people of the constituency to support the party candidate. Sources said the party was still considering Paramjit Kaur Khalra's name for the bypoll and was in touch with the rights activist. Paramjit Kaur, however, in a post on X, had denied contesting any election. "Very soon we will announce our candidate and begin campaigning," said the source. MSID:: 122922747 413 |

AAP govt ridiculed Sikh sacrifice with song and dance: Badal
Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal accused the Aam Aadmi Party govt of committing an act of "grave sacrilege" against the Sikh religion by trying "shamelessly" to convert the solemn occasion of the anniversary of the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur into an "entertainment event" at Srinagar. "This is shocking beyond belief," said Badal, adding that this act cannot be dismissed as an "inadvertent" blunder because the chief minister, the minister concerned, Harjot Singh, and several other members of this govt claim to be steeped in Sikh heritage and come from Sikh families. No one in Punjab, not even a non-Sikh, is unaware of the solemnity of the occasion of the ninth Guru Sahib's martyrdom, and none can think of it as an occasion for entertainment. "Acts of sacrilege of Sikh scriptures and shrines are not only happening every other day, but the govt itself felt no shame or guilt in ordering its uniformed police to invade the historically sacred Gurdwara Sahib at Sultanpur Lodhi under direct orders of the chief minister. They opened unprovoked and indiscriminate firing against Sikh religious figures in our Gurdham, and since the CM himself was behind this sacrilegious police assault, no one has even been held accountable for the heinous crime," alleged Badal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AirSense 11 – Smart tech for deep sleep ResMed Buy Now Undo Reacting to reports about the performance of musical entertainment acts and items at an event organised by the Punjab government through its language department in Srinagar, Akali Dal chief Parkash Singh Badal described it as "a part of a deep-rooted conspiracy to dilute and belittle the unrivalled Sikh heritage." In a statement issued here, Badal said, "The real motive behind these acts of sacrilege is to distance our future generations from the uniqueness of our glorious history and the religious legacy of our great Guru Sahiban." "By organising song and dance events instead of recitation of sacred Gurbani at the most profoundly solemn occasion of the anniversary of the martyrdom of "Hind di Chadar" Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, the AAP govt has deliberately sought to ridicule a sublime occasion and to belittle the world's most unique sacrifice in the defence of freedom of conscience, religious tolerance, peace, and communal harmony. This is the ultimate disrespect shown to the great Guru Sahib and an act of "grave sacrilege," said the SAD president. Badal demanded that all those behind the anti-Sikh mindset of this govt must be made to admit and explain the endlessly continuing series of acts of sacrilege against the Sikh heritage and Sikh scriptures in the state.
