Presence of global companies ensure stability of nation's energy sector
KUALA LUMPUR: The presence and investment of major global companies, such as the leading United States oil company ConocoPhillips, are crucial in ensuring the stability and sustainability of the nation's energy sector, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, received a courtesy visit from ConocoPhillips chairman and chief executive officer, Ryan Lance, in Putrajaya today.
ConocoPhillips is involved in oil exploration, development and production activities globally, including in Malaysia.
"In this meeting, I emphasised that the Madani government is committed to clear and investor-friendly policies to ensure the confidence of large companies such as ConocoPhillips to continue to make Malaysia a long-term investment destination.
"The presence and investment of major companies such as ConocoPhillips is important in ensuring the stability and sustainability of the country's energy. It is also able to stimulate economic growth and open up high-value job opportunities in the oil and energy sector," said Anwar in a Facebook post today.
ConocoPhillips also stated their continued commitment to investments in Malaysia, including involvement in the Kebabangan Cluster Production Sharing Contract (KBBC PSC) in Sabah, which is operated through its subsidiary, ConocoPhillips Sabah Gas Ltd, with strategic partner Petronas.
Earlier, during a leadership dialogue session titled "Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG): Investing for the Long Term" at the Energy Asia 2025 Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Lance said that ConocoPhillips is focusing its investment in Sabah while also strengthening its long-term commitment to Malaysia.
He added that the company is currently in discussions with Petronas regarding potential investment opportunities in the country.

The issue isn't that every retiring civil servant should have his/her tenure extended, but the excellent ones should, especially when there's a vacuum in key positions. There was no lack of candidates for the MACC chief or IGP posts, but they were duly filled, not according to normal promotion procedures. In Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat's case, it's very clear that a very good CJ is being bypassed, even according to normal procedures. It's not just ordinary people who are asking for her extension, but the Malaysian Bar, respected leaders, and other professionals. To us, it means; 1) Your judgment is flawed and unreliable; 2) You don't understand your role, or you don't have the courage to advise the king on your choice. It's the prime minister who chooses the key people in his or her government, not the royals, as the royals in this country, according to the Federal Constitution, do not govern. Top appointments to the government are the PM's choices. As long as the choices are made according to the constitution, the king makes the PM's choices official. That's the meaning of the king acting on the advice of the PM. It takes a PM with a backbone, not a glib mouth, to advise the king on his role. Apparently, Anwar can't do the job. Just resign and spare us this misgovernance. BobbyO: What a lame excuse. Anwar, do you think the people are fools, or do you think that power is in your hands and you will decide according to your own selfish agenda, just as you did in extending MACC Azam Baki's tenure not once but thrice? Remember, even the toughest and cruellest dictator has fallen, as they think that power is theirs to wield as they like. Remember Umno and jailed former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak. They thought that they were unbeatable as they had the finance, resources, and manpower. Look at where they stand today. Such a lame excuse, and Malaysians can very clearly see through you and your motive if you do not want to extend Tengku Maimun's tenure. Why then did you extend Azam's tenure? Is it because it worked in your favour? Was it not a political move? Why were the others due for promotion made to wait? What about the inspector-general of police and his deputy? Why was the deputy not promoted to the next level? It is so clear to see that you are frightened of promoting decent and honest civil servants. Seriously, Anwar, stop taking the people for granted. Umno did, and they lost big - four states to the opposition. What will be PKR's position at the next election? Reduced to the level below MIC and MCA? Half full Cup: Let's face it, our PM does not welcome most of the people's opinions, especially the professional group and his supporters, because he feels he is now the maharaja of the day. In fact, he has even forgotten or refused to recognise who his supporters are for the past 20 over years. The fault lies in his supporters (especially the urban citizens). If we look at what he did when he was in Umno, he was a very racist leader, hence his meteoric rise to be the deputy president of Umno. He was almost on the verge of becoming the president (prime minister). Most of his reforms at the time were very much at the expense of a certain group of people. We have been badly mistaken, or maybe we have fooled ourselves. Has DAP also taken advantage of the people's foolishness to gain power and enjoys that power now? BetterMY: Thank you for shooting yourself in the foot once again! The rakyat is fully aware of your administration's tactics of only retaining those subservient to you. Where you should have retained talent, you let them go, and where you should have dispensed with them, you gleefully retained. We will keep this in mind when voting in the 16th general election. Mind you, we're not racist to completely dispel of BN and PN, there are good administrators there too. It's just a matter of ridding BN and PN of the extremist and corrupt voices. Once that is done, we'll have a credible alternative to your incompetent administration. We have given you an opportunity, and you squandered it. We have given you that opportunity despite your entitled attitude towards the top post since 1998. Your days at the administration are numbered, and you will soon join the one-term PM list. And before any ardent and blind supporters of Pakatan Harapan jump on this, please be known that I have voted for Harapan since GE10. Oil market reacts mildly to geopolitical de-escalation
FOLLOWING almost two weeks of mutual missile strikes, the US President last week announced that Israel and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire, sending Brent oil prices to below USD70/bbl and effectively erasing gains driven by geopolitical tensions. The oil price pullback is not entirely surprising as the conflict had minimal impact on the physical oil market. We reiterate our view that the oil demand-supply fundamentals remain unexciting in view of rising barrels production from OPEC+ by 411kbpd in May and June, which would likely continue in 2H25. We expect the planned production hikes by OPEC+ to tilt the oil market towards oversupply territory in 2025, aggravated by wobbling oil demand, as US Liberation Day tariffs dampen global economic growth. EIA in its Short-Term Energy Outlook (June) forecasted an oil oversupply of 820kbpd in 2025, which may cap oil price upside in the near-term due to stock build over the course of the year. We do not rule out any further oil price spike in the event of an escalation in geopolitical conflict, especially in the Middle East region. However, judging by the fundamentals, we reckon that Brent oil prices may see strong resistance to sustain at above USD70/bbl. Given their high earnings sensitivity to oil prices, companies with substantial upstream E&P exposure could see earnings contraction due to lower average realised oil prices (2025e: USD67/bbl) when compared to a high base of USD80/bbl in 2024. The reduced exploration works as a result of dwindling oil prices and lingering Petronas-Petros debacle will continue to put drilling demand under pressure. According to Wood Mackenzie, the oil industry is likely to delay growth capex and discretionary spending in view of softening oil prices and macro uncertainties, especially for major projects, given that US' tariffs may inflict decision paralysis for some. That said, oil prices of USD65/bbl may dent margins but unlikely to warrant significant budget cuts and development plan changes. Our channel checks also indicate that the global O&G project pipeline remains largely intact but merely seeing some deferrals in contract award. As such, the temporary pullback on development projects may, in our view, slowdown new FPSO project awards from oil majors. The petrochemicals sector is still in the doldrums with a prolonged downcycle perpetuated by persistent demand weakness and global petrochemicals overcapacity. Overall, the petrochemicals sector will remain in the woods in the coming years as global capacity addition will continue to outstrip demand growth, which will in turn weigh on global utilisation rate. We retain our Brent oil price forecasts for 2025/2026 at USD67/bbl and USD70/bbl, with the view that oil prices will continue hovering at USD60-65/bbl in 2H25, barring escalation in geopolitical conflict. On a macro level, we view that oil prices are skewed to the downside from current levels due to (i) dissipating geopolitical premiums given Middle East conflict de-escalation, (ii) increasing output from OPEC+ and (iii) potential demand slowdown induced by US Liberation Day tariffs. However, our OVERWEIGHT rating is based on a bottom-up view of the sector as most of our stock recommendations are BUYs due to favourable fundamentals and earnings profile of the respective stocks, along with undemanding valuation across the sector. —July 1, 2025 Main image: Siemens

Of PMX leaving country amid judiciary quandary, accusing M'sians of politicising Tengku Maimun's service extension
'ISN'T the timing of PMX's trip abroad coinciding with the appointment of a new Chief Justice?' Such was the question posed on the Facebook page of a former New Straits Times (NST) journalist as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim slammed alleged attempts to lobby the government into extending Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat's tenure which ends today (July 1) by another six months. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) announced yesterday (June 30) that PMX will embark on a week-long tour from July 1 (today) to 7 which covers three major economic hubs, namely Italy, France and Brazil, to bolster economic, trade and strategic ties. The official visit will include high-level meetings with PMX's counterparts in Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro with the three markets collectively recording bilateral trade of RM50.91bil in 2024, according to senior press secretary to the Prime Minister Tunku Nashrul Abaidah. Whether the timing of PMX's latest overseas trip is a coincidence or otherwise was questioned by a commenter to the NST's ex-journo FB post who pointed out that the 'same thing happened when the new AG was roped in and Zahid got his freedom'. Recall that PMX was in Jakarta from Sept 5-7, 2023 to attend the 43rd ASEAN Summit which was the day after the Kuala Lumpur High Court accorded a discharged not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Sept 4, 2023). The DNAA collectively 'cleared' the UMNO president from all 47 charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT), corruption and money laundering in relation to the Yayasan Akalbudi funds. Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah made the ruling after allowing Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar's application to DNAA Ahmad Zahid after the prosecution decided to halt the case as they wanted to investigate the case more in depth. On Nov 11 last year when Dasuki was made the Attorney-General, PMX was not in town having earlier embarked on a four-day official visit to Cairo from Nov 9-12 at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. He also attended the Extraordinary Arab and Islamic Summit on the escalating violence by the Zionist regime on Palestinians and Lebanese before extending his globe-trotting feat to Peru (Nov 12-16) and later to Brazil (Nov 16-19) to attend the 2024 G20 Rio de Janeiro summit. Rafizi schools PMX Earlier, former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has rubbished PMX's politicisation claim given that concerns expressed by the legal fraternity and Malaysians at large over the extension of Tengku Maimun's tenure and that of Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim are justified. 'They're not political or seeking to politicise the appointment of judges (which has its own processes),' argued the former economy minister in a media statement which has earned wide applauses after Malaysians at large blasted PMX for turning defensive on the matter. 'It's a reasonable thing to do considering the current situation where the vacancy of more than half of the Federal Court judges will slow down the progress of court cases.' The Pandan MP who can now voice his opinion with no restriction having left the government further stressed that PMX cannot dismiss the concerns of legal practitioners simply by assuming that this issue is a political attack. 'This polemic began with legal practitioners' concerns that the next leadership of the judiciary will change to someone who is directly appointed to the Federal Court,' he justified. 'With more than half of the senior judges in the Federal Court vacant, the question arises whether the direct appointment (of a judge to the Federal Court) is part of a plan to bypass the seniority list of existing judges and change the leadership of the judiciary for the next eight years given that he (the appointed judge) will only reach mandatory retirement in 2033?' As it is, the on-going judiciary controversy has worsened the state of trust deficit on the Madani government with 'double standards' having emerged in other key appointments.
