Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
on Tuesday marked ten years of the
Digital India
initiative with a detailed reflection on its transformative journey, calling it a movement that has empowered 140 crore Indians and elevated India to global digital leadership.
In an article shared on LinkedIn, the PM wrote, 'While decades were spent doubting the ability of Indians to use technology, we changed this approach and trusted the ability of Indians to use technology.'
Launched in 2015, Digital India was aimed at democratising access to technology and governance. Reflecting on its scale and success, the PM wrote, 'From how we govern, to how we learn, transact, and build, Digital India is everywhere.'
PM Modi underlined that internet connections in India have jumped from 25 crore in 2014 to over 97 crore today. Over 42 lakh kilometres of Optical Fibre Cable, equivalent to 11 times the Earth-Moon distance, now links even the remotest villages. He highlighted that India's 5G rollout is among the fastest globally, reaching forward military zones such as Galwan and Siachen.
As per a recent PIB release, nearly 6.92 lakh km of optical fibre has been laid under
BharatNet
, covering over 2.18 lakh Gram Panchayats.

Internet users have risen by 285per cent in the past decade, and data costs have plummeted to under ₹10 per GB.
The PM also cited key digital platforms that have become global models — from
UPI
, now handling over 100 billion transactions annually, to Direct Benefit Transfers worth ₹44 lakh crore that have cut leakages and middlemen.
As per official figures, DBT has saved the government over ₹3.48 lakh crore by removing fake beneficiaries.
'Schemes like SVAMITVA have issued 2.4 crore+ property cards and mapped 6.47 lakh villages, ending years of land-related uncertainty,' he noted.
Calling India's
digital economy
a force for inclusion, the PM spotlighted ONDC and GeM as tools that have empowered MSMEs, artisans, and women-led enterprises. 'ONDC recently crossed 200 million transactions… GeM has crossed ₹1 lakh crore GMV in just 50 days,' he said.
He added that platforms like CoWIN, DigiLocker and FASTag have made India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) a model for the world.
Through India's G20 Presidency, the country launched a global DPI repository and a $25 million fund to help other nations adopt inclusive tech systems.
According to the PIB, India's digital economy contributed 11.74per cent to GDP in 2022–23 and is expected to rise to 13.42per cent by 2024–25, with projections placing its share near 20per cent by 2030.
On the startup front, the PM wrote that India now ranks among the world's top three ecosystems, supported by initiatives like the $1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission. As of May 2025, India had over 34,000 GPUs, the largest affordable compute access in the world.
'Digital India has not remained a mere government programme; it has become a people's movement,' PM Modi concluded.
'Let us build what empowers. Let us lead with technology that unites, includes, and uplifts', he wrote.

Air India flags fake X handles offering ‘help' to crash victims' kin

Air India is fighting two battles in the wake of the AI-171 crash: one with grief, and another with fraud. As it tries to help families of the 260 people who lost their lives lost in the June 12 tragedy, Air India reported a series of fake handles cropping up on X (formerly Twitter), masquerading as official support accounts offering "help" to the families of victims. "We have flagged multiple handles that pretended to offer assistance. We don't want anyone to fall prey to fraudsters at such a vulnerable time," said a source familiar with the matter. The deceit is not limited to social media. The airline's dedicated helplines, set up for grieving families and survivors, have received a staggering number of calls. While some heartbreaking, others bizarre. Another wanted reimbursement for "precious jewellery" allegedly in a relative's luggage. One even asked for free international tickets for their entire family this winter, claiming to be a distant relative of a victim. "Amid the massive outpouring of grief in the aftermath of India's worst air disaster in recent memory, a few individuals have been trying to use this situation to make a quick buck. It is painful to see some people, claiming to be related to the passengers, trying to take advantage of the situation," the source said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3 & 4 BHKs near ITPL from ₹2.7 Cr* Sumadhura Group Learn More Undo Air India had set up two 24/7 helpline numbers to handle inquiries and provide support. On Day 1 alone, the helplines received more than 10,000 calls, many from inconsolable family members. "The volume was overwhelming, but it wasn't just that. The emotional trauma of listening to the raw grief of callers broke down many of our call centre staff. Some fainted, others needed counselling or medical help," the source said. Air India did not respond to queries sent by TOI. In the days following the crash, Air India announced an interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the families of each of the deceased and to the lone survivor to address immediate financial needs. These payments began rolling out from June 20. Tata Sons, the airline's parent company, announced an additional compensation of Rs 1 crore for the next of kin of each victim. To ensure transparent and long-term support, a dedicated trust with a corpus of Rs 500 crore is being set up. Support on the ground has also come from a massive network of volunteers. More than 500 staff from Air India and 17 other Tata Group companies were deployed in Ahmedabad, each bereaved family was assigned a dedicated caregiver trained to assist with grief management, logistics, and support. Cheema defends Punjab's Rs 8,500cr loan plan, cites legacy debt & RBI limits

1 2 Chandigarh: Reacting to criticism of the AAP govt by the opposition for its plans to raise a loan of Rs 8,500 crore in the second quarter from July to September, finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Tuesday said that the state govt planned to borrow funds to meet the redemption obligations of over Rs 3,500 crore for legacy debt. He added that the loan was within the borrowing limits sanctioned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the projections made in the state budget 2025-26. "The opposition party leaders don't understand economics. Even their household budgets are made by their wives. From the US to our neighbouring Haryana, state economies borrow funds. However, it is being done within the prescribed limits and continuous attempts are being made to bring down the outstanding debt. The RBI has now allowed us to raise loans over the next three months," said Cheema, on the sidelines of a press conference on growth in goods and sales tax (GST) collections. "I had given the quarterly projections of the state's borrowings in the budget presented in March. The entire details were shared in the vidhan sabha. The AAP govt has improved its financial health and that is why the RBI has been approving the borrowing limits well in advance," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Average Price of a 6-Hour Gutter Guards Upgrade Read More Undo The market borrowings to be undertaken by the state govt have been approved by the RBI. The cash-strapped govt would raise a loan of Rs 2,000 crore in July, Rs 3,000 crore in Aug, and Rs 3,500 crore in Sept. Replying to a media query, Cheema said that the state has to make interest payments of Rs 25,000 crore and principal payments of Rs 18,200 crore on legacy debt availed by the previous SAD-BJP and Congress regimes in FY 2025-26, while planning to borrow Rs 49,900 crore, despite Rs 13,000 crore in deductions by the Centre. He added that the state govt planned to borrow Rs 8,500 crore to meet the redemption obligations of over Rs 3,500 crore for legacy debt in the second quarter of the current financial year alone. "Punjab's fiscal management is on a strong footing, with the state govt taking proactive steps to manage its debt obligations. He highlighted that the Punjab govt recently invested Rs 1,000 crore each in the guarantee redemption fund (GRF) and consolidated sinking fund (CSF), with the latter now exceeding Rs 10,000 crore, a significant increase from Rs 3,000 crore when the current government took office," he added. Majithia moves HC against ‘illegal arrest'

1 2 3 Chandigarh: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia has approached the Punjab and Haryana high court against his "illegal" arrest by the Punjab Police in a corruption case. According to Majithia, the FIR dated June 25 registered against him by the vigilance bureau in Mohali is a result of political witch-hunting and vendetta, initiated by the present political dispensation. It has also been stated that the sole object of the FIR is to malign and harass him for being a vocal critic and political opponent. As per the petition, he was kept in illegal custody on June 25 for few hours before his formal arrest was made. "The remand application filed by the investigating agency lacked any concrete or urgent investigative ground and merely relied on broad, speculative allegations such as his alleged influence, foreign connections, and general statements about the need to confront him with documents or digital devices. These assertions clearly reflect a motive to extract a confession or admission from the petitioner in violation of the constitutional provisions," Majithia claimed in his plea. The petition filed by the senior leader also alleged that the magistrate, while granting remand, failed to record mandatory satisfaction as required under rules, including examining case diaries, recording reasons for police custody, and ascertaining the existence of a specific investigative need. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Neuropatia atacando durante o dia? According to the plea, the SC in its detailed order dated March 4 refused his custodial interrogation despite the same allegations being pressed before it via multiple affidavits filed by the state of Punjab. It has been further claimed that despite his cooperation and findings of the apex court, the state once again resorted to seeking police custody by concealing material facts and misrepresenting urgency before the magistrate.
