July 28 (UPI) -- At least four people were killed, including an off-duty police officer, and six others were injured in a shooting Monday evening at a New York City skyscraper housing the corporate offices of the National Football League and Blackstone.
The gunman, who was identified by police as a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, stormed the Park Avenue skyscraper lobby just before 6:30 p.m. EDT. According to police, the man opened fire, before barricading himself on the 33rd floor, where he was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted wound.
"The scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized," announced NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. The alleged shooter's body was found next to a Palmetto State Armory AR-15 assault rifle.
Police released a photo of the man walking into the building and carrying a long gun in the crowded area just blocks from the Museum of Modern Art and Grand Central Terminal. Officers said they believed the gunman fired at the police officer, who was working private security, as he entered the lobby.
Police conducted a floor-by-floor search of the 634-foot skyscraper for those still sheltering in place and to secure the building.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he had been to the scene and would be visiting those injured in the hospital.
"I have been on the scene at the shooting in Midtown, and we can report the shooter is neutralized. The NYPD are now searching 345 Park Avenue carefully. If you are in the building, please stay where you are," Adams warned in a post on X.
"People have been shot and injured," he said, "and I will soon be going to the hospital."

Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner among 4 killed in shooting at firm's NYC office

A Blackstone executive was among the four people killed in a shooting that took place Monday night at the firm's New York City office, the firm said in a statement on Tuesday. Wesley LePatner was a senior managing director and global head of Blackstone's Core+ Real Estate and CEO of its Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust. LePatner was shot and killed Monday night at 345 Park Avenue, the office building the firm shares with the NFL. The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, killed four people, including LePatner and NYPD officer Didarul Islam, before shooting and killing himself. Tamura entered the building around 6:30 p.m. ET and began shooting throughout the lobby before taking an elevator to the 33rd floor, which houses the offices of real estate firm Rudin Management, which owns 345 Park Avenue, according to statements from the NYPD made during a press conference on Monday night. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said during the press conference that a suicide note found on the body the gunman implied that he was targeting the NFL. "He alluded to having CTE from playing in the NFL—he never played in the NFL,' Adams said in a television interview Tuesday with a local Fox affiliate. 'He alluded to the CTE being the reason for his illness.' CTE, or Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, is a brain disease linked with high-impact head injuries. An NFL employee was in critical condition on Tuesday, according to a letter sent to NFL staff from commissioner Roger Goodell. LePatner had worked at Blackstone for just shy of 11 years, according to her LinkedIn, and previously worked in several roles across Goldman Sachs' real estate division. "Words cannot express the devastation we feel," Blackstone said in a statement. "She was brilliant, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond. She embodied the best of Blackstone." Jake Conley is a breaking news reporter covering US equities for Yahoo Finance. Follow him on X at @byjakeconley or email him at

Gunman who killed four in New York was targeting NFL headquarters, mayor says

A gunman who killed four people at a Manhattan office building was trying to target the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL) but took the wrong lift, according to New York City mayor Eric Adams. Investigators believe Shane Tamura, of Las Vegas, was trying to get to the NFL offices after shooting several people on Monday in the building's lobby but accidentally entered the wrong set of lifts, Mr Adams said in interviews on Tuesday. Four people, including an off-duty New York City police officer, were killed. Police said Mr Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested he had a grievance against the NFL over an unsubstantiated claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). He had played football in high school in California nearly two decades ago. 'He seemed to have blamed the NFL,' the mayor said. 'The NFL headquarters was located in the building, and he mistakenly went up the wrong elevator bank.' The note claimed he had been suffering from CTE – the degenerative brain disease that has been linked to concussions and other repeated head trauma common in contact sports — and said his brain should be studied after he died, two people familiar with the matter told the Associated Press. It also specifically referenced the National Football League, one of the people familiar with the matter said. A motive has not been determined but investigators were looking into, based on the note, whether he might have specifically targeted the building because it is home to the NFL's headquarters. The shooting took place at a skyscraper that is home to the headquarters of both the NFL and Blackstone, one of the world's largest investment firms, as well as other tenants. The company confirmed one of its employees, Wesley LePatner, was among those killed. 'Words cannot express the devastation we feel,' the firm said in a statement. 'Wesley was a beloved member of the Blackstone family and will be sorely missed. She was brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond.' A Yale graduate, Ms LePatner was a real estate executive at Blackstone, according to the firm's website, and spent more than a decade at Goldman Sachs before joining the firm in 2014. Surveillance video showed the man exiting a double-parked BMW just before 6.30pm carrying an M4 rifle, then marching across a public plaza into the building. Then, he started firing, police commissioner Jessica Tisch said, killing a police officer working a corporate security detail and then hitting a woman who tried to take cover as he sprayed the lobby with gunfire. The man then made his way to the lift bank and shot a guard at a security desk and shot another man in the lobby, the commissioner said. 'Our officer, he was slain in the entryway to the right as soon as he entered the building, the suspect entered the building,' Mr Adams said in a TV interview. 'He appeared to have first walked past the officer and then he turned to his right, and saw him and discharged several rounds.' The man took the lift to the 33rd floor offices of the company that owned the building, Rudin Management, and shot and killed one person on that floor. The man then shot himself, the commissioner said. The building, 345 Park Avenue, also holds offices of the financial services firm KPMG. The officer killed was Didarul Islam, 36, an immigrant from Bangladesh who had served as a police officer in New York City for more than three years, Ms Tisch said at a news conference. 'He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm's way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,' ms Tisch said. 'He died as he lived. A hero.'

President Trump mourns victims of NYC Midtown shooting: ‘Senseless act of violence'

President Trump mourned the loss of four people who were gunned down Monday night by a madman who stormed a sprawling office building in Midtown and opened fire. 'I have been briefed on the tragic shooting that took place in Manhattan, a place that I know and love,' Trump said on Truth Social Tuesday morning. 'I trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence. My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice.' Authorities have identified Shane Tamura, 27, as the shooter who killed NYPD officer Didarul Islam, 36, and three other people during a deadly rampage. NYC Midtown shooting timeline NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided a timeline of events leading up to Monday's mass shooting: Reports of the shooting at 345 Park Ave. start coming in around 6:28 p.m. The shooter, Shane Tamura, 27, is seen on surveillance footage getting out of a double-parked black BMW between 51st and 52nd streets, with an M4 rifle. He walks towards the skyscraper, enters the lobby and turns right, where he shoots police officer Didarul Islam, 36, dead. Tamura guns down a woman cowering behind a pillar in the lobby as he sprays more bullets and walks toward the elevator bank — where he shoots dead a security guard crouching at his desk. One more man reports being shot and injured in the lobby. He was in critical but stable condition. The gunman allows a woman to walk out of the elevators unharmed, before heading up to the 33rd floor, where building owner Rudin Properties' offices are located, 'and begins to walk the floor, firing as he traveled.' One man is shot and killed on that floor. 'He then proceeds down a hallway and shoots himself in the chest,' ending his rampage. It's unclear how long the mayhem lasted. Tisch posted on X at 7:52 p.m.: 'The scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized.' Tamura, who came from Las Vegas, had driven across the country to carry out the massacre. Tamura died from a self-inflicted gunshot and was found with a suicide note, according to authorities.
