‘It's an overlooked gem for cheap luxury' – the African lagoon island with four-star hotels for £50 a night

The Sun05-05-2025
IN this week's Spotlight on column, we're shining the spotlight on El Gouna, near Egypt's most popular resorts.
The Sun's Deputy Travel Editor Kara Godfrey visited the resort recently.

She said: "When I talk to friends about going to Egypt, they mainly head to Sharm el Sheikh or Hurghada.
"But El Gouna - just 30 minutes from Hurghada - feels like a bargain place for some five-star luxury.
"A man-made lagoon, the gated island offers safety for any nervous travellers, while the hotels are insanely cheap without scrimping/
"I spent my days chilling at Cook's Club, which is just £50 a night, and is right on the waterfront.
"Live DJs, beach umbrellas and swings, and a huge pool as well meant it was one of the most relaxing holidays ever."
Here are some of our other top picks.
MUST SEE/DO
This part of the world is home to some beautiful desert landscapes and the best way to take it all in is on an adrenaline-pumping quad bike tour.
Alex Safari offers excellent excursions for £46pp, taking holidaymakers across the Wadi Billy (Dry Canyon), one of the world's largest canyons, before venturing to a Bedouin desert village for traditional Egyptian grub and tea.
HIDDEN GEM
Tandoor in Abu Tig Marina is loved by locals but you won't find many other tourists dining here.
The fusion restaurant dishes up some of the best authentic north Indian cuisine with impressive views of the yacht marina.
Visit on a Monday or Thursday, when you'll be able to enjoy live music with your dinner.
BEST VIEW
The golf tower at the Steigenberger Golf Resort really does have some of the best sweeping views of El Gouna's mountain range, winding lagoons and the Red Sea.
Make sure to head there at sunset, when you will not only see the landscape bathed in an orange glow, but also get to enjoy celebrations that take place daily at the top of the tower.
Sip on top-notch cocktails and listen to tunes from a DJ while soaking up the epic scenes.
RATED RESTAURANT
Nihon, a rooftop Japanese restaurant at The Chedi hotel, has foodies returning time and time again for its delicately crafted sushi.
Diners can tuck into creative sushi rolls such as the Red Devil, a passion fruit, salmon and crab meat maki, rolled up with cream cheese and avocado.
Or there are sashimi, gyozas and Asian salads. Make sure to stay for a cocktail, too, which you can sip while admiring views of the Red Sea.

BEST BAR
You won't regret venturing a little further to the Tap South, right on the Abu Tig marina in Hurghada.
It attracts a chic crowd, who come to watch the boats bobbing in the bay, but stay for the vast drinks menu and live music.
Singers and bands perform throughout the week and it's a great spot to warm up before hitting El Gouna's largest nightclub, Aurora.
It has locally produced wine, colourful cocktails and gastro-pub favourites.
HOTEL PICK
There's a reason the Casa Cook brand is popular among Brits.
It offers trendy interiors, comfortable beds and great food at bargain prices - and the one in El Gouna is no exception.
Surrounded by beach and desert, the 5H adults-only Casa Cook offers a traditional Nubian design, blending earthy grey tones with rustic wooden features and modern amenities.
On site there is a spa with a pool, two saunas, steam rooms, plunge pools plus a hammam, beach club and even a kiteboarding centre.
Double rooms cost from £85pp per night. See casacook.com.

The hugely underrated foodie seaside town that is one of the best day trips from London

Everyone wants something different out of a day trip. There are the people that just want to lie horizontal on the beach for hours, the ones who want to stop by as many historic sites as possible, and the ones who will spend all their time collecting trinkets from indie shops and galleries. Then, there are the people that go to new places with just one thing on the agenda: good food. Of Time Out's 20 best places for a day trip from London in 2025, there's one place that stands out when it comes to outstanding bars and restaurants to rival those here in the capital. It's... Deal! And you can get there from St Pancras in just one hour and 20 minutes. In Time Out's guide to the town's best bits, travel writer and Deal local Kate Wicks said: 'Along the award-winning High Street, you'll find a wealth of independent shops, bars, and restaurants, but it's Deal's sedate (yet uplifting) atmosphere that remains its biggest draw. Ten miles from Dover, this is a town beside the sea, rather than a seaside town (for kiss-me-quick amusements, head to Margate): it's creative, classy and also happens to be one of the UK's top hidden foodie destinations.' Arrive hungry – Deal is full to the brim with exceptional grub. So much, in fact, that it's Time Out's favourite foodie getaway in the country. There's the classic fish 'n chips from Middle Street Fish Bar, the crab doughnuts at The Rose hotel, the French dishes at Cherub's, Japanese izakaya at The Blue Pelican, the organic wines at Le Pinardier wine bar, the swanky lunch at 81 Beach Street and the pig's head and haggis terrine at Frog & Scot. But there's only so much eating and drinking you can do. Kate also recommends wandering around the historic Deal Castle, filling your boots at Deal Town Market, seeing some art at Linden Hall Studio and spinning vinyl at Smuggler's Records. Make sure to go down to the seafront too, and look at for a grey seal or admire Deal's historic Victorian pier (which is getting a £1 million facelift next year). 5 fruit and vegetable picking farms near Tokyo for a nature-filled day out

Best for: Grapes Tucked into the sloping hills along the Tama River, Kimura Vineyard in Setagaya is a surprisingly spacious grape farm by Tokyo standards. Around 10 grape varieties grow on the grounds and there's also a vegetable garden and a chicken coop, making for a tranquil rural-style retreat without leaving the city. Among the farm's highlights are prized cultivars like Shine Muscat, Nagano Purple and Muscat Noire, making Kimura Vineyard a top spot for grape connoisseurs looking to try out fresh Japanese produce without heading too far out of town. Grapes are only available for purchase through the farm's hands-on picking experience, which is usually offered from late August through September. Be sure to check the website before visiting, as the farm often announces irregular holidays and opening hours online. Once you've harvested your favourite bunch with a pair of scissors, owner Koichiro Kimura recommends heading over to nearby Futakotamagawa Park or the scenic Tama riverbank to enjoy your freshly picked fruit. Prices for the 2025 picking season will be announced in August, and picking experiences are offered on a first-come, first- served basis. Be sure to get there early, as eager pickers start queueing from as early as 6am on peak days.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander summoned Martin Rolfe, the head of National Air Traffic Services, for talks — but he did not step down. Airline bosses, led by Ryanair, had called for him to go after they had to rip-up timetables. A similar 2023 failure cost carriers £100million — and they said lessons had not been learned. Ms Alexander said of the latest drama: 'This was an isolated event and there is no evidence of malign activity. 'I know that any disruption is frustrating for passengers. "Flights are now resumed and I am grateful to airlines who are working hard to get people to where they need to be.' She advised passengers to continue to check with airlines before travelling. Monica Clare, 68, from Brentford, West London, will miss a friend's wedding because her Aer Lingus flight from Heathrow to Shannon in Ireland was cancelled yesterday. The retired maintenance manager said: 'I'm absolutely numb. 'I'm so upset. I'm heartbroken. It's disgraceful. "It's absolutely unbelievable in this day and age that something that went down for 20 minutes has caused havoc like that all over the country. 'I'm so upset, I'm so angry. Brits face DAYS of travel chaos after all flights grounded at UK airports - as tech glitch 'mystery' grows "I've spoken to my friend who's getting married. They're devastated.' The Sun revealed cockpit crews were sent an urgent warning of the pending travel misery by controllers, who told them of an 'ATC radar failure'. The disruption was the second to have happened as a result of a technical fault at Nats' hub in Swanwick, Hants, in two years. Most of the disruption came at Heathrow, where 84 departures and 71 arrivals were cancelled, while some inbound flights had to be diverted to European cities. BA flights were still being cancelled yesterday owing to aircraft and crew being out of position, contributing to 16 more cancellations at Heathrow. Asked if Mr Rolfe should quit, Business Minister Gareth Thomas said: 'Clearly, an incident happened two years ago and measures were taken then. "It looks like those measures weren't enough but we need to get to the bottom of what exactly happened.'
