Footpaths for differently abled: BMC re-invites proposal to empanel NGOs
Its earlier tender could not be completed due to stringent conditions like financial turnover, experience, and manpower requirement. Subsequently, BMC relaxed some of the criteria and reinvited the RFP. However, its pre-bid meeting saw participation from only one NGO. The BMC is likely to relax conditions further.
The NGOs are required to prepare a detailed report on the accessibility of existing and newly proposed footpaths assigned to them, based on guidelines issued by Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan.
They are also supposed to suggest rectifications. The NGOs have to carry out a detailed footpath accessibility audit of all such footpaths and recommend suggestions or ideas to improve accessibility for footpath users whenever a potential problem is identified.
The NGOs will assess footpaths in BMC jurisdiction, analyse the situation, and propose solutions based on an agreed approach to addressing accessibility issues for disabled persons.
According to BMC, the objective of the assignment is to ensure accessibility to footpaths for persons with disabilities (PwDs). BMC will take steps to implement conscious planning for the safe design, construction, and operations/maintenance of footpaths to ensure accessibility for PwDs.
The aim is to ensure that a person in a wheelchair or someone who is blind can traverse and access a footpath without any hindrance, said a BMC official.
"An audit will not reveal anything we do not already know. We are well aware that conditions are very bad on all our arterial roads, especially in the suburbs. An audit can be done for free by BMC crowdsourcing feedback from citizen groups like ALMs and concerned citizens. What is required is that BMC incorporate all key requirements for pedestrian infrastructure in their road contracts. This has not happened in the case of the road concretisation contracts awarded in past 2-3 years.
That is unpardonable and a great loss. Footpaths and accessibility cannot be an afterthought. BMC should now take up key arterial roads and stretches and bring pedestrian infrastructure to the highest standards," said Rishi Agarwal, founder of the pedestrian advocacy group Walking Project.

BJP's new renaming call in Bhopal has a Pakistan angle: Why the row?
The controversy over renaming of places, public buildings and amenities has returned to Bhopal, with BJP leaders demanding that the names of the government-run Hamidia Hospital and Hamidia College be hospital, attached to the state-run Gandhi Medical College, and the college are named after Hamidullah Khan, the last Nawab of Bhopal. The demand of some BJP leaders in the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is based on their claim that the last Nawab was keen to join his state with Pakistan and was therefore a traitor. The BJP leaders have not produced any evidence to support their week, BJP corporators submitted a resolution in the BMC, demanding that the Hamidia Hospital and Hamidia College be renamed. Congress corporators, led by leader of the Opposition Shabista Zaki, opposed it on the grounds that the BMC did not have the authority to rename buildings. However, the resolution was passed in the House.A week before, the BMC House had passed a resolution demanding that the Ashoka Garden locality in Bhopal be renamed as Rambagh. The local BJP corporator claimed the locality's original name was Rambagh. Congress leader Abbas Hafiz said such demands were merely aimed at creating distractions from the real issues that plagued Bhopal. 'BJP leaders feel raising communal demands will help them resurrect their political careers,' he said.A section of the BJP leadership has in the past targeted the former Nawab of Bhopal. Two claims were made against him—one that he allegedly delayed signing the merger with the Union of India and second, a firing by the Bhopal state police in Raisen district on youth who were demanding an early merger of the Bhopal princely state with the Union of and Madhya Pradesh at large, are no stranger to renaming rows. In 2021, the administration had renamed the Habibganj railway station in Bhopal after Rani Kamalapati, the Gond princess who ruled the region in the 18th has also been a demand to change Bhopal to 'Bhojpal' after the medieval Parmar ruler Raja Bhoj. Ganpati Mandals Urge BMC To Roll Back Rs 15,000 Fine For Potholes Near Pandals
Last Updated: On July 21, the BMC increased the penalty for potholes found in the vicinity of Ganpati pandals post-festival to Rs 15,000 from Rs 2,000. The Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvaya Samiti, which represents Ganpati mandals across Mumbai, on Sunday requested the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to remove the recent increase in fines for potholes near Ganpati pandals—from Rs 2,000 to Rs 15,000 per pothole. According to a report by The Hindustan Times citing advocate Naresh Dahibawkar, chairman of the Samiti, the increase in the fine will put an unfair financial strain on the organisers of Ganesh festival celebrations. 'Such strict enforcement is not there even for contractors who construct poor roads. We will follow up with both the BMC and the state government to seek cancellation of the fine," said Dahibawkar, according to the HT report. Ganeshotsav 'The very essence of this festival is rooted in social unity, nationalism, the spirit of freedom, self-respect, and pride in our language," he said. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 11:54 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. BJD corporator arrested in rape case
Bhubaneswar: The BJD corporator of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Amaresh Jena, was arrested from Balasore district on Sunday in connection with a rape case lodged against him in Bhubaneswar, police said. Jena, a prominent BJD leader, was booked under the BNS sections 64(2) (rape), 89 (committing miscarriage without woman's permission), 296 (obscene act) and 352 (criminal intimidation), besides Section 6 of the POCSO Act, at Laxmisagar police station, where the survivor lodged a complaint on Wednesday. As Jena was not available at his house and possible locations in the city and remained incommunicado, the police formed a special squad and launched a manhunt for the BJD leader. 'Finally, he was located at a village under Berhampur police station limit in Nilgiri area in Balasore and apprehended by the special squad,' a police officer said. Jena was staying in a village in Nilgiri area, which is close to the forest, with the aim of escaping to the jungle if there was any police raid to apprehend him. However, he could not escape because the operation was carried out secretly, the officer said. Immediately after his arrest, the BJD issued an office order stating that: 'Amaresh Jena, Corporator, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, is hereby suspended from Biju Janata Dal with immediate effect.' The BJD Bhubaneswar president, Ashok Panda, told reporters on Sunday that Jena's suspension will not affect the party. 'No one is indispensable for BJD. It is party first. I reiterate that law will take its own course.' He said the BJD has acted immediately as soon as Jena was arrested by police. 'The BJD stands by its pro-women ideology. Jena's arrest will in no way damage BJD. It is a huge party with thousands of workers and leaders. He is an accused and will go through the legal process,' Panda said. On Saturday night, the police had arrested five aides of Jena on charges of harbouring him. The police said the five persons provided conveyance and assisted Amaresh Jena in evading arrest. The five arrested individuals hail from various parts of Khurda and Jagatsinghpur districts. They were forwarded to judicial custody after their bail pleas were rejected. A 19-year-old woman, in a written complaint at Laxmisagar police station, accused the BJD corporator of rape, foeticide, cheating and criminal intimidation. Jena, while absconding, told a section of the media that he was 'innocent' and 'framed' by the ruling BJP. In her complaint, the survivor alleged that the corporator sexually exploited her with the promise of marriage when she was 17 years old. She claims that Jena took her to Puri, engaged in physical relations, and in February 2024, when she was still a minor, forced her to abort a two-month pregnancy by administering pills. The survivor also alleged that she was threatened and directed not to reveal the matter to anyone. Police have recorded the statement of the survivor, and she also underwent a medical test. Bhubaneswar police had this week arrested the State president of NSUI, Udit Pradhan, for allegedly raping an engineering student. He has also been suspended from the party.
