Dodgers Reportedly Targeting Marlins' Cy Young Winner Sandy Alcantara
The Los Angeles Dodgers need to upgrade their starting rotation. Although injuries to Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Roki Sasaki have not derailed their season, it has created a concern for the longevity of the team's success. According to FanGraphs, the Dodgers' starting pitchers rank 24th in the league. Due to their struggles, the Dodgers plan to be active at the trade deadline and have zeroed in on one of the top available pitchers.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Los Angeles is targeting Miami Marlins' ace Sandy Alcantara to strengthen their pitching rotation.
The former Cy Young award winner made his return this season after Tommy John Surgery in 2023. Following a rough start that saw Alcantara's ERA balloon over 8.00, he has shown signs of rounding into form. Since June 3, Alcantara has a 2-1 record with a 2.74 ERA and 19 strikeouts across 23 innings. His recent stretch has brought his ERA down below 6.70 for the season, and although it is still not an appealing number, it is a positive sign heading into the trade deadline.

Alcantara, 29, is in the third year of a five-year, $56 million deal. The team-friendly contract will make his price tag more expensive, but it will also be an attractive selling point to teams vying for his services. The Dodgers are already spending an estimated $100 million on starting pitching this season, per Spotrac. With the number of starters on the injured list, Alcantara's durability may leave some lingering doubts, but his cheap contract offsets those concerns.

Los Angeles would not be buying another rental arm to get them to October and perhaps help repeat as World Series champions. They would be investing in a former Cy Young winner with three more years of team control on a contract any team would envy.
Alcantara's next scheduled start is Saturday, June 28, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Expect the Dodgers to monitor his performance closely against a divisional rival.

Phillies' Rob Thomson Reveals Andrew Painter Will Be Shut Down for All-Star Break
Phillies' Rob Thomson Reveals Andrew Painter Will Be Shut Down for All-Star Break originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have one of baseball's best starting rotations. What makes it even better is the fact that multiple starters aren't even pitching yet. Aaron Nola is on the injured list, and the 5th ranked prospect in baseball, Andrew Painter, is still working things out in the Minor Leagues. Advertisement Painter was invited to the MLB Futures Game, but Phillies manager Rob Thomson announced that Painter wouldn't pitch in the game. According to Todd Zolecki of Thomson is sticking to the team's plan to shut Painter down during the All-Star break. Thomson and the Phillies are being extra careful with Painter after his injury, which knocked him out all of 2024. This decision, to keep him shut down during the All-Star break, could also point to a future decision from Thomson. If the Phillies stick to their other plan, which is bringing Painter up sometime in the second half of July, this shut-down period could be a good chance to see how Painter's body reacts to time off. Advertisement The Phillies' rotation is strong, and there isn't much room for Painter at the Major League level. With that in mind, Painter might have to go a decent amount of time between starts. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) looks on from the dugout against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC LeClaire-Imagn Images Even if he takes over for Mick Abel, Nola is right in line with Painter for his return to the mound for the Phillies. Painter might be looking at a less straightforward call-up to the big leagues, as the Phillies' rotation is too good to break up at the moment. Regardless of when Painter is called up, this plan from Thomson to sit Painter in the Futures game is one to monitor. If Painter reacts well to time off, then there will be more optimism going forward when they eventually bring him up to the Major Leagues. As the Phillies plan to be careful with him, Painter is set to be shut down during the All-Star break and not pitch in the MLB Futures Game. Phillies' Kyle Schwarber Reaches Career Milestone as Free Agency Looms
Phillies' Kyle Schwarber Reaches Career Milestone as Free Agency Looms originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Expected to enter free agency once the season ends, Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber set a career milestone last month. Advertisement The 32-year-old was among a number of players recognized on Monday by the MLBPA for having reached 10-years of service in Major League Baseball, the "holy grail" for players. The fourth overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs, Schwarber made his MLB debut on June 16, 2015. Throughout his 11 seasons with the Cubs, Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox, and Phillies, Schwarber has slashed .231/.346/.494 with 309 home runs and an OPS of .840. He was also named to the NL All-Star team in 2021 and 2022, and won a World Series with the Cubs in 2016. This season, Schwarber is off to a fast start for the defending NL East champs. Through 85 games, he's hitting .250 with a team-leading 25 home runs and 57 RBIs. Philadelphia Phillies left fielder Kyle Schwarber (12) hits a double against the Atlanta BravesDale Zanine-Imagn Images According to the MLBPA website, fewer than 10% in baseball history have played for a decade or more. Despite being an impending free agent for the third time in his career, Schwarber is focusing on helping the Phillies reach the postseason once again. "You want to make sure that you give the best that you can to your team," Schwarber told Fox Sports recently. "Because if it is the end, how do you want to be remembered? Do you want to be remembered for being selfish, where you're only caring about yourself? Or do you want to really be remembered for giving everything you had to your team?"
