Tzaneen private hospital site confirmed, services revealed
According to information in Herald's possession the company bought the Erf 3418 Tzaneen Ext 78 for R2.214m, which is said to be located just before Olive Tree Coffee Shop, where people currently do subsistence farming.
The private hospital facility will offer the following services:
Mother and childcare.
General surgery.
Orthopaedics.
General medicine.
Ear, nose and throat.
Ophthalmology.
Advanced radiology.
Day clinic.
Oncology.
Mental healthcare.
Rehabilitation centre with an adjoining pharmaceutical depot.
'We envisage an 80-bed acute care facility initially with the capacity to accommodate up to 120 beds on expansion when necessary. The facility needs to provide innovative and green healthcare for sustainable healthcare solutions. A facility of this magnitude will be a first for the province,' according to the land application document.
The centre will also provide much needed employment opportunities which will exist during construction with employment of locally based companies for the construction of the project.
Permanent placements for the running of the facility will be available with the view of sourcing locally.
Permanent placements will include various skill sets and employment will be available in managerial, healthcare provision, pharmaceutical, food services, security officers and general work.
Cllr Collen Mathebula, during the council sitting, said the centre will not only benefit residents of Tzaneen but also serve surrounding Mopani areas, including Giyani, Phalaborwa, Hoedspruit, and others.
He added that the project is is a need in the area, as the existing health institutions don't have services such as oncologists.
However not everyone agrees with the new development, Ward 15 Democratic Alliance (DA) Cllr Chrizelle Dreyer objected to the proposal, arguing that Tzaneen already has sufficient medical infrastructure.

New Tzaneen healthcare centre approved by council
'I want to know why are we considering this unsolicited bid if we already have healthcare facilities in Tzaneen, while there are other wards which don't even have a mobile clinic. And, the current sanitation infrastructure at the other part of Ext 78 is not operational, how will this facility get operational sanitation infrastructure if the existing infrastructure is failing the residents of Ext 78.
'In 2023 this municipality declined an offer from a well known business in town to expand, they wanted to buy a much smaller erf for a lot more, yet it was declined on the basis of 'advanced plans' for this erf. And until today, nothing has happened on this erf. Although we understand the revenue benefits and job creation of the idea of a new healthcare facility. We have some concerns regarding it, GTM is setting a bad example about selling GTM land through unsolicited bids,' Dreyer explained.
Mathebula says there is nothing wrong with an unsolicited bid, as the municipality purchases land in two ways, the one where they identify land and sell it to buyers or buyers identify land and apply to buy it, which Manoge did and was approved.
At the moment information on when construction will start is not yet available.

New Tzaneen healthcare centre approved by council
TZANEEN – A new healthcare centre is set to be established in Tzaneen, as announced during the seventh Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) Council sitting held on Thursday, May 29. Cllr Collen Mathebula revealed that the upcoming medical facility will include specialists such as oncologists and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialists. According to Mathebula, the new centre will not only benefit residents of Tzaneen but also serve surrounding Mopani areas, including Giyani, Phalaborwa, Hoedspruit, and others. He added that the project is expected to create much-needed job opportunities for locals. However, the announcement sparked debate. Ward 15 Democratic Alliance (DA) Cllr Chrizelle Dreyer objected to the proposal, arguing that Tzaneen already has sufficient medical infrastructure. 'We have Mediclinic and the newly opened Tzaneen Health Care Hub. I understand we may lack oncologists, but another centre is unnecessary,' she said. Despite her objections, no further opposition was raised, and the proposal for the new healthcare centre was adopted by the council. In other council matters, chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC), Ngaoko Maunatlala, provided updates on ongoing municipal projects across all 35 GTM wards. He highlighted serious delays with the Petanenge pedestrian crossing bridge, reporting that the project was only 11% complete as of MPAC's latest site visit. The bridge construction began on November 17, 2024, and was scheduled for completion in April 2025. With significant delays already evident, Maunatlala questioned why the contractor was allowed to continue working despite the poor progress. He called on the mayor, the speaker, the chief whip, and the head of infrastructure to visit the site themselves, and recommended that the current contractor be removed from the project. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) echoed their disappointment over the bridge delays and urged the council to take swift action. Meanwhile, Thabo Maunatlala, speaking on behalf of Mayor Gerson Molapisane, announced that the municipality currently has R145 million in self-generated funds, which are being used to finance various development projects. He also reported that electricity tariffs are expected to increase by 12.7% over the next three years, while sewerage charges will rise by 4.4%. Although Molapisane was scheduled to deliver his budget speech during the council sitting, he announced that it would instead be presented on June 12. Product recall: Toys from Takealot, Toys R Us and e-bike batteries pulled over choking, fire hazards
The tissue box toy poses a choking hazard to young children, while the ebike batteries pose a fire hazard. The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has confirmed the recall of two products: the Tissue Box Toy included with Fisher-Price 3-in-1 SnugaPuppy Activity Center, and the lithium-ion batteries used in Santa Cruz Heckler 9 e-bikes. What the toy looks like NCC said that Mattel South Africa informed them of a recall for the Tissue Box Toy due to a defective component cover that can come apart, making the internal support brackets (small parts) accessible. 'The detachable tissue box toy can come apart, exposing the support brackets, posing a choking hazard to young children.' The tissue box toy is located on the underside of the table, near the Fisher-Price logo. It is white with red decorations and has 'tissues' made of sensory cloth. On one side, it features a black and white wavy striped pattern, and on the other, a yellow-green pattern with raised spots. The Tissue Box Toy being recalled. Picture: Supplied Toy bought between 2023 and 2025 The commission said the toy was sold between 2023 and 2025 at: Amazon Com Ser (SA) Pty Ltd Lilliput Novelties (Pty) Ltd OneDayOnly Offers (Pty) Ltd Loot Online (Pty) Ltd Takealot Online (Pty) Ltd Toy Kingdom (Pty) Ltd Amic Trading, which operates Toys R Us 'Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled tissue box toy, remove it from the activity centre, and keep it away from young children. Recall of lithium-ion batteries Another product recall involves the interchangeable 720w lithium-ion batteries of the Santa Cruz Heckler 9 e-bikes. The interchangeable 720w lithium-ion battery is located inside a black case under the frame. The supplier, Santa Cruz Bicycles, LLC, informed the NCC that their investigation and testing revealed that a small number of batteries supplied to certain Heckler e-bike may be at an increased risk of an electrical short circuit. 'In such cases, this may pose a fire hazard, resulting in a risk of injury or property damage.' Products sold between February 2022 to April 2025 The commission added that the affected Santa Cruz Heckler 9 e-bikes were made available from February 2022 to April 2025 and sold nationally. 'Consumers are urged to stop using the e-bikes immediately and disconnect the battery from the Heckler 9 e-bike and charger. 'They should contact Santa Cruz Bicycle if they have sold or gifted it to anyone and forward this information. 'Consumers are encouraged to check whether their battery is affected by visiting the Santa Cruz Bicycles recall page.
