Apple's answer to ChatGPT-like AI search experience is in the works: Report
Apple is said to be working on a homegrown artificial intelligence-powered chatbot aimed at competing with services like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google Gemini. As per a report by Bloomberg, the company has created a new internal team called 'Answers, Knowledge and Information' (AKI), tasked with building in-house AI services — including what's described as a 'ChatGPT-like search experience.' The team is reportedly being led by Robby Walker, who previously oversaw Apple's Siri voice assistant. Walker is now a senior director under Apple's AI division and reports to John Giannandrea, the company's head of AI strategy. According to the report, the AKI team is still in the early stages of developing a product internally referred to as an 'Answer Engine.' Bloomberg describes it as a system capable of crawling the internet and generating responses to general-knowledge queries. Apple is also said to be weighing the option of turning this feature into a standalone application, while also integrating its backend capabilities into future iterations of Siri, Spotlight, and Safari search. The company has reportedly begun listing job openings tied to this initiative on its careers page, with several listings specifically seeking candidates experienced in search algorithms and engine development. While Apple already offers some AI-based search features via its Apple Intelligence platform, it currently relies on external services — such as OpenAI's ChatGPT — to fulfil complex web-based queries routed through Siri. While Siri can perform basic web searches, it lacks the natural conversation abilities provided by AI chatbots like Gemini or ChatGPT. This proposed 'Answer Engine' aims to bridge that gap by combining Siri's contextual awareness with the language understanding and response capabilities of modern generative AI. That said, the Bloomberg report emphasises that development remains in its early phases, and Apple could ultimately choose not to launch the service at all. Additionally, it notes that some leaders within Apple's AI division remain sceptical about the long-term usefulness and direction of ChatGPT-style generative AI tools.

Apple Intelligence rollout across devices is complete, the Cupertino-based tech giant has now plans to advance its AI development, and this includes the move to build a ChatGPT-like search experience. As part of that, the company has dozens of job listings for several new positions within its 'Answers, Knowledge, and Information' team. The new job listings include roles like Staff Machine Learning Engineer in multiple locations across the US and China. It is to be noted that the new team is expected to improve the search response on Siri, Spotlight, Safari, and other iOS-based tools. In the nutshell, we can say that Apple has also joined the race to hire the top AI engineers to fast-track AI development. A new Apple ChatGPT-like search experience in the works 'The App will be a simple, streamlined experience with Apple's AI, available as an icon on the iPhone home screen,' Gurman was quoted saying in a recent article on Bloomberg. Gurman said, 'A standalone app is currently under exploration, alongside new back-end infrastructure meant to power search capabilities in future versions of Siri, Spotlight and Safari.' This new AI search capability is currently being called 'Anser engine.' This is said to analyze the web on the basis of user queries or general-knowledge questions. Apple AI development race Apple has been on its AI journey for some time, and Gurman has said that the company has hired AI talents from other companies in the past. However, it is still way behind the competition in terms of development. The company has already disappointed iPhone users by pushing the conversational Siri until iOS 27 at least.

Apple's new ‘Answers' team set to build ChatGPT-style app
Apple has put together a new team to build a ChatGPT-style app, according to Bloomberg's Mark team, called Answers, Knowledge and Information or AKI, is working on creating an 'answer engine' that can respond to questions using web-based information. The report also mentions that Apple is exploring a standalone app, as well as building new back-end infrastructure to support search in Siri, Spotlight, and Safari search. Until now, Apple has been resistant to making its own AI chatbot, citing reasons such as low consumer interest. Instead, it partnered with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT into Siri, giving users access to 'world knowledge' without having to develop the technology itself. But it's now clear that many users rely on AI chatbots like ChatGPT for various purposes, such as their search capabilities. While ChatGPT is now integrated with Apple's personal AI system, Apple Intelligence, doesn't support search features — a sign that Apple may be falling behind in the AI space. Gurman also pointed out that Apple is now hiring for this team, looking for people with experience in building search engines and algorithms. The move comes shortly after the company's chief executive Tim Cook, told staff following earnings call, that the AI revolution is 'ours to grab'. He also assured them that Apple will be investing heavily to make it a reality. Apple reported a revenue of $94.04 billion in its third quarter, up 10% from last year. Net profit reached $23.4 billion, or $1.57 per diluted share, a 12% increase in earnings per share.
