Ed Sheeran launches unexpected new career as artist with first-ever painting collection

Yahoo7 days ago
Ed Sheeran is swapping guitar strings for paintbrushes with the release of his first-ever art collection.
The singer's Cosmic Carpark Paintings, a vibrant series of original canvases and unique prints, are set to go on sale later this week.
It marks the first time Sheeran's artwork will be available to the public, with proceeds going to his charitable Ed Sheeran Foundation.
The foundation aims to provide accessible, high-quality music education to children across the UK, funding grassroots projects, schools, and instruments.
Inspired by celestial forms and his signature splash painting style, the Cosmic Carpark Paintings were created in a disused London car park during breaks in Sheeran's Mathematics Tour.
The singer-songwriter, who took up painting in 2019 after finishing his record-breaking Divide tour, used the creative process as a form of artistic expression between music releases.
'I started painting at the end of my Divide Tour in 2019 and it's something that I've used as a creative outlet ever since,' Sheeran explained. 'When I was growing up, both of my parents worked in art, so I've naturally always been interested in it, and I always enjoyed studying art at school.
'I was back and forth on tour last year, and I used a lot of my downtime in the UK to paint. I'd run to a disused carpark in Soho each morning, paint, then run home and I'd do that daily until I headed back out on tour again.'
Adding: 'I told my good friends Damien Hirst and Joe Hage about the paintings, and they encouraged me to put on my own thing, so I decided I'd use it as a way of raising funds for my Ed Sheeran Foundation, which supports music education in the UK and helps fund grassroot music projects, schools and equipment, so all kids have access to music.
'I want to thank Damien and Joe for everything they've done for me on this exhibition and I'm delighted to be putting it on.'
The exhibition will be on view at London's HENI Gallery throughout the drop period, with 50% of proceeds from original artwork sales and £300 ($400) from each print going directly to the Ed Sheeran Foundation.
Original works will be available by application via HENI Primary, while prints can be purchased through HENI Editions from 10 July to 1 August 2025.

Historic day as Suffolk to host first two stages of Tour of Britain

Suffolk is set to host two stages of the Tour of Britain this September for the first time when it kicks off in September. It is another huge boost for the county just days after 90,000 people descended on Portman Road to watch Ed Sheeran perform his first ticketed Ipswich gigs since Chantry Park in 2019. East Suffolk will host the first stage of the race for the first time since 2012 on Tuesday, September 2, with Woodbridge and Southwold named as the start and finish lines. For the area it means the world's top male cyclists will head to the district for a third consecutive year, as it had the honour of hosting the final stage for the 2024 race. Today's announcement also marks the debut of Woodbridge as a host venue for the event. "The Tour, and the community activities which accompany it, also help to promote the physical and mental health benefits of cycling to all ages and abilities and showcase East Suffolk as a cycle-friendly destination to a national audience.' Matevz Govekarn, of Slovenia, won the final stage of the tour in 2024. (Image: For two Suffolk towns, Southwold and Stowmarket, it will be the first time they have welcomed the men's tour. Both places have hosted a finish of the women's race. Andy Mellen, leader of Mid Suffolk District Council, said: 'We're delighted to be able to bring the Tour of Britain Men into the heart of Suffolk and look forward to welcoming some of the world's best riders. "We already know from the Women's Tour that our towns and villages will be out in force to cheer them on. 'The race brings real excitement to the district, inspiring others to enjoy the benefits of cycling, as well as giving a real boost to our visitor economy.' Ed Sheeran & Kylie Kelce Call Taylor Swift the ‘Cheat Code' for Easy Applause

Kylie Kelce and Ed Sheeran chatted about a mutual friend on the latest episode of the former's Not Gonna Lie podcast, with the pair agreeing that Taylor Swift is the 'cheat code' for getting crowds to be as loud as possible. The topic of the pop superstar first came up as the British musician was talking about the highest decibel level he's ever had an audience reach. 'We brought on Eminem, and that was the loudest I've ever heard a crowd — like, anywhere in the world,' Sheeran told Kelce of a 2023 performance in the rapper's home city of Detroit. 'But I will say it's because I brought Eminem on stage in Detroit. That's the cheat code.' When Sheeran asked Kelce which artist would be the 'cheat code' for Philadelphia crowds, the former field hockey player said that it would have to be her brother-in-law's ultra famous girlfriend. 'I mean, I think Taylor, just because it's home,' Kelce told the four-time Grammy winner, referring to the fact that Swift was born and raised in West Reading, Penn., before moving to Nashville as a teenager. Sheeran replied, 'I kind of think Taylor anywhere, though.' Both Kelce and Sheeran have first-hand experience with the high-volume crowds Swift draws. The former — who is married to retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce — has known the 'Fortnight' singer since 2023, when Swift first started dating Jason's younger brother, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Sheeran, meanwhile, has performed on stage with Swift a number of times, including countless nights more than a decade ago on her Red Tour, for which he served as an opening act. Speaking of the Red trek, Sheeran revealed to Kylie how traveling with Swift turned him into an NFL fan. 'I moved to Nashville for Taylor's Red Tour in 2013, and I got a place there,' he said. 'I went to Walmart to buy bits to move in, and I just bought some pajamas. And then when I got home, I was wearing the pajamas, and when someone was around, they were like, 'Oh, you're a Titans fan.' I was like, 'Guess I am.'' The interview comes as Sheeran is gearing up to release his new album, Play, in September. So far, he's shared three tracks from the LP — 'Azizam,' 'Old Phone' and 'Sapphire.' His chat with Kylie isn't the first time he's spoken about Swift in the lead-up to Play. While guesting on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast in April, he opened up about his friendship with his former tourmate, telling listeners, 'I see her when I see her … Like, instead of catching up the whole time, we have a proper sit-down, six-hour catchups, and I think that's like a really nice way to do it.' Ed Sheeran Overwhelmed With Emotion Performing With Musical Hero James Blunt: ‘Top 3 Favorite Moments on Stage Of All Time'

Ed Sheeran has played gigs in the largest venues all over the world, collaborated with major pop and hip-hop stars (Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Cardi B, Stormzy) and had his songs streamed tens of billions of times. But on Sunday night (July 13) during the final show of his three-night run at Suffolk's Portman Road stadium — home of his beloved Ipswich Town FC football club — Sheeran truly took it back to the start when he shared the stage with the singer who made him want to do this all in the first place: James Blunt. I'm very nervous to sing this, because I've never sung this with him and this really is a dream come true,' Sheeran told the crowd as he announced Blunt. The two then launched into a duet on Blunt's sentimental 2004 hit 'Goodbye My Lover,' with Blunt taking the lead on vocal and playing keyboards as Sheeran strummed an acoustic guitar. 'I'm quite emotional after that actually. That is top three favorite moment on stage ever. Ever,' Sheeran said afterwards. Sheeran has long spoken of the huge impact Blunt's music had on his own desire to write and perform songs and in an accompanying note on the video he wrote, 'I saw @jamesblunt when I was 13 opening for @eltonjohn at Portman Road. I bought his album that day, then got obsessed. My dad took me to Cambridge junction to see him months after, and he became my favourite singer songwriter. His songs moulded me, his performing inspired me. I wanted to be him.' He added, 'I wanted to be him so much that I signed to the same management as him. I wanted to be him so much I signed to the same record label as him. I sometimes have to remind myself how much he means and meant to me, because we've been mates for well over a decade now. I'm godfather to his son. He's one of my close mates.' Sheeran said that he sometimes forgets he was once a 13-year-old boy who got obsessed with Blunt, covered his songs at a school talent show, went to a number of the fellow singer-songwriter's gigs and has transformed from being just a fan to a both a fan and a friend, which is 'super weird' when he thinks about it. 'I asked him to do the final night at ipswich because of that gig 21 years ago where I saw him at the same venue,' Sheeran explained. 'And I asked him to sing my favourite songs of his tonight, because he, and the song, mean so much to me. Thank you James for coming today. I know you finished your South American tour two days ago, and you should be resting, but you flew to ipswich to sing with me. And it meant the world.' The 'Bad Habits' ended his note with a reversal of the old saw about meeting your heroes. 'Don't meet your hero's, unless your hero's are James Blunt,' Sheeran wrote. 'Love you mate.' It was a magical weekend for Sheeran all around, as he also got to collaborate with another one of his formative influences, British boy band Westlife, who joined him on night one for a joint performance of their 1999 hit single 'Flying Without Wings' during the run that included support from Myles Smith, Tori Kelly, Busted, Skye Newman, Dylan and Maisie Peters. Check out footage of the performance and Sheeran's note below.
