2025 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest: Live updates, highlights as Joey Chestnut returns to Coney Island

Yahoo2 days ago
Everyone's favorite Fourth of July tradition is back, with the 2025 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest set to take place once again from Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. The major players remain the same — Joey Chestnut for the men's competition, and Miki Sudo for the women's, who each hold the respective records for most hot dogs eaten in their respective events.
But last year's contest was an anomaly of sorts, as Major League Eating star Chestnut faced a one-year ban thanks to his partnership with Impossible Foods, a direct competitor with Nathan's Famous. Now, he'll make his return to the field and look to break his own record of 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes at the annual event. Technically, his own personal record is a bit higher, having eaten 83 hot dogs in a competition of his own last year while on the outskirts, head-to-head against Takeru Kobayashi. He is a heavy odds favorite to win the men's competition at -1800 at DraftKings Sportsbook.

With Chestnut out of the field in 2024, Patrick Bertolette took home the win with 58 total hot dogs in 10 minutes. He holds the second-best odds to win this year's competition at +1000, though Chestnut, notably, has exceeded that total in all but one of his 16 wins at the event.
Sudo, headlining the women's competition, enters this contest seeking her 11th win, having won 10 of the last 11 years of the event. The only season she did not manage a win (2021), she was out due to pregnancy, and Michelle Lesco took home the mustard belt with 30 3/4 hot dogs eaten. Her own personal best came just last year with 51 hot dogs eaten, setting a new record in the women's competition.
Date: Friday, July 4

Yankees makemove to add veteran third baseman to system

Yankees makemove to add veteran third baseman to system originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Yankees have signed veteran infielder Jeimer Candelario to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple‑A Scranton/Wilkes‑Barre, according to Conor Foley of the YES Network. Advertisement While the move may not register as blockbuster news, it quietly addresses an area of need: third base. Candelario has logged nearly 700 career games at third in the majors, including 12 starts at the hot corner earlier this season with the Reds. And with the Yankees struggling to find consistency at the position, every option is on the table. Former Cincinnati Reds third baseman Jeimer Candelario throws to first at Great American Ball Park.© Katie Stratman-Imagn Images The Yankees currently have Jazz Chisholm Jr. playing third base, but he has been vocal about feeling more comfortable at second base. DJ LeMahieu has been playing second since he came off the injured list. The Yankees are said to be in the market for a third baseman at the trade deadline, but with the news Saturday that Clarke Schmidt will likely need season-ending surgery there's a long list of needs. Cincinnati recently released the 31-year-old switch-hitting Candelario after hitting just .113 with one home run in 22 games, his season derailed by a lingering back injury. But he's not far removed from a strong 2023 season when he hit .251 with 22 home runs and 70 RBIs across time with the Nationals and Cubs. Advertisement This is a classic low-risk, potential-reward signing. If Candelario can get healthy and find his swing again in Scranton, he could give the Yankees a veteran third baseman with actual upside. He's not a savior, and this isn't the blockbuster movie Yankees fans were hoping for.. But for a team trying to plug a lot of roster holes and survive the grind, it's a smart move. Bad Bunny's ‘NUEVAYol' Video Arrives on Fourth of July With Pro-Immigrant Message: ‘Together We Are Stronger'

Bad Bunny has dropped a powerful political statement on Friday (July 4) with the release of his new video 'NUEVAYol.' In the video, which celebrates Latin culture in New York, the global superstar pays tribute to the Puerto Rican diaspora and delivers a sharp critique of Donald Trump's anti-immigrant policies. More from Billboard Bad Bunny Posts Video Slamming ICE Raids in Puerto Rico: 'Sons of B–ches' BLACKPINK Is 'Ready to Jump' in What Looks to Be a New Music Teaser: Listen Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom's Reps Address Split: They've 'Been Shifting Their Relationship' One of the most striking moments in the video happens when a voice that sounds like Trump echoes through a vintage '70s radio. The message is clear and direct: 'I made a mistake. I want to apologize to the immigrants in America,' says the AI-powered Trump voice. 'I'm in the United States. I know America is the whole continent. I want to say that this country is nothing without the immigrants. This country is nothing without Mexicans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Colombians, Venezuelans, Cubans…' Aside from being an artistic gesture, it is a Fourth of July statement at a time when immigrant communities in the United States are the target of an aggressive deportation campaign. Just Thursday, Congress passed Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill,' which bolsters ICE's power with 10,000 new agents and 100,000 additional detention center beds. This is not the first time Bad Bunny has spoken out against the inhumane treatment of immigrants. In June, the artist slammed ICE in a video recorded in Carolina, Puerto Rico, where officers are seen detaining several people in the streets. 'Those mother—-ers are in these cars, RAV4s. They came here… sons of bi—es, instead of letting the people alone and working,' Benito says in the video. In the 'NUEVAYol' video, directed by Renell Medrano, Bad Bunny not only critiques anti-immigrant policies, but also proudly celebrates his Puerto Rican heritage. In one standout scene, the Statue of Liberty's forehead is draped with a massive Puerto Rican flag. The video closes with a powerful message in Spanish: 'Together We Are Stronger.' Richard Greenberg Dies: Tony-Winning ‘Take Me Out' Playwright Was 67

Richard Greenberg, the playwright behind Take Me Out, Three Days of Rain and Eastern Standard, has died. He was 67. The Tony winner's death was announced on social media, where several people in the theater world have since reacted to his passing, including Denis O'Hare, who won a Tony for originating the role of gay accountant Mason Marzac in Take Me Out when it debuted in London back in 2002. 'I owe him more than I could possibly say. He gave me the greatest gift ever–a beautiful character to inhabit in a beautiful play.' O'Hare continued, 'He also gave me 2 of my best friends–Lisa Peterson and Linda Emond. We all met and worked on Rich's one act-The Author's Voice at Remains Theatre in 1987 in a festival of one acts called 'Sneaky Feelings'. I have a sneaky feeling of grief mixed with gratitude for this man. RIP Rich.' Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who also won a Tony when he played Mason in Broadway's 2022 revival of the play, wrote on his Instagram Story, 'Rest in peace Richard. You gave this world so much.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Denis O'Hare (@ohdenis) Theater director Robert Falls also reacted to Greenberg's passing after they were 'deep in collaboration on his gorgeous adaptation' of Philip Barry's Holiday, which he called a 'profound loss mid-process' ahead of its premiere at Chicago's Goodman Theatre in February. 'Heartbroken by the news of playwright Richard Greenberg's death,' wrote Falls on Bluesky, adding: 'For over 30 years, it's been one of life's great pleasures to know Rich and his writing. Dazzling, humane, wildly funny. … He was also one of the smartest people I've ever met. But he wore that brilliance lightly—often cloaked in hilarity, or tossed off in the driest, most devastating line at dinner. His kindness was real. His loss is enormous.' Born Feb. 22, 1958 in New York City, Greenberg graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University, where he studied creative writing under Joyce Carol Oates. In addition to his Tony-winning work on Take Me Out, Greenberg was known for penning such plays as The Dazzle, The American Plan, Life Under Water and The Author's Voice, as well as the 2013 Broadway adaptation of Breakfast at Tiffany's and the book for the musical Far From Heaven.
