Drew Timme expected to lead pack of Nets rookies throughout summer league
'Yeah, we told him we need him to be a rock. Him and Tosan [Evbuomwan] need to be our steady forces. They need to be the ones who settle everything if it's getting hectic,' assistant coach Steve Hetzel said after Timme was the leading scorer in the 90-81 summer league loss to Oklahoma City.
'We've sent a message to Drew to come out here and try to be the best player, try to show the rest of the league how good he is. We really like Drew. … He has some real, real skill. We think very highly of him. And so this is kind of what we expect out of him.'

Timme scored a team-high 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting versus OKC, with nine rebounds and a block in 29:30. He had a dozen points on 6-of-8 shooting in the fourth quarter.
'Yeah, he's got skill, like you saw. He's great,' Nolan Traore said. 'So being able to play with a smart guy like that who can play the low post is really helpful for the team, so it's good.'

With four of their five first-round picks playing in summer league, the Nets will challenge Timme to show leadership in Las Vegas.

'Of course. As with anyone that's a little bit older, you just learn the ropes quickly and just try to learn bits and pieces from them. He's just an easygoing guy and kind of always there for advice,' said Danny Wolf, who started at power forward alongside Timme. 'He's an awesome guy, he had a great game tonight. Just a fun guy to be around. He's awesome.'
Timme is on a non-guaranteed contract, vying to get Brooklyn's lone open two-way spot.

'Well, we have a lot of roster players, so I'd say that the starting lineup is yet to be determined,' Hetzel said. 'But he's got to try to make the team, and then we'll go from there.'

Brooklyn's Spanish head coach Jordi Fernández invited Valencia head coach Pedro Martínez and Spanish hoops star Anna Cruz to be guest assistants as the Nets prepared for summer league. Cruz, who played for the Liberty and is from Fernández's hometown of Badalona, continued as a guest in Las Vegas.

'Oh, we love having [Martínez] around. We sat down with Coach Pedro so he could teach us some of his offensive rebounding rules. They've led the league for many years; stole a couple ideas from him,' Hetzel said. 'And Anna's been super helpful on the court. She's wonderful. She has such an established career. It's nice to have her around.'
Dariq Whitehead commented to The Post about the addition of Michael Porter Jr.: 'It's a great addition for us. An older vet, a champ, we know what he can do. So to get to play with him and learn, it'll be a good opportunity for all of us.'

Despite injury, Kobe Brown showcases his potential for Clippers in Summer League win
LAS VEGAS — This was the moment for Kobe Brown to shine and to show the Clippers that he can be a rotational player for them this season. But misfortune struck when Brown got tangled with a Rockets defender who fell on his right ankle in the third quarter. Brown sat on the Clippers' bench for a few minutes before he limped to their locker room with 5:59 left in the third quarter. Brown didn't return in the Clippers' 95-92 NBA Summer League win over the Houston Rockets at Cox Pavilion on Friday night after sustaining what the team described as a right ankle contusion. Brown is entering his third season with the Clippers and the team is eager for the 2023 30th overall draft pick to make an impact. He'll make $2.65 million this season and will have a qualifying offer for next season at $4.7 million. 'He's just got to continue to do what he did tonight,' said Clippers assistant coach Jerry Castleberry, the team's Summer League coach. 'Play great defense. Make the right reads. We've been talking about it all training camp. Get in the paint, draw two, make the right reads and if they put a small on him, he showed his ability to be able to score against a mismatch tonight and doing it the right way — quickly, getting downhill, not dancing, just getting straight to the point. Brown scored 10 points in the first quarter, going four for five from the field, making both of his three-point attempts. On one of those threes, he ran the length of the court and took a pass for a lob dunk. Brown finished with 14 points, four rebounds and four assists in 20 minutes. 'Ankle is good,' Castleberry said. 'Ankle is fine. Just precautionary. He'll be OK.' The Clippers waived Jordan Miller before summer league started, but they still had a roster spot so he was added to the team. He did not disappoint Friday, producing 23 points and 11 rebounds. Miller has been given an opportunity to show the Clippers — and any other team — how the Summer League is useful for him. 'With this team it takes a lot of humility. Not thinking less of yourself but also thinking less of yourself,' Miller said. 'Just finding a way to maximize whatever role it is. It's not just for me, but it's for all the guys. We got guys that can score. The only way we're going to get on the floor is defending and making open threes. That's just the reality of it. ... But for the most part, just working game reps. Like, you're not going to get a lot of ball-screens. You're not going to get a lot of touches. So you just got to work on your off-ball shooting, movement shooting and being able to not mess up defensively.' It was on defense where Clippers rookie Yanic Konan Niederhauser was at his best. Niederhauser blocked four shots and had 10 rebounds. He used his seven-foot frame as a deterrent and displayed why the Clippers drafted him out of Penn State. 'He did everything he was supposed to do,' Castleberry said. 'He was great with rim-protection, changing shots and I just thought he was good.'

The NBA can be a ruthless industry, often without a warning sign or a proper goodbye. It doesn't care if you're on vacation, taking time off or simply minding your own business. And the latest guy to experience the cold side of it all is Michael Porter Jr., who recently shared the story of how he found out he'd be swapping Denver's championship aspirations for Brooklyn's long-term rebuild. Advertisement In what was supposed to be a calm pre-work getaway, Porter was flying out to Saint Tropez when his offseason, and, quite frankly, career, took a sharp turn. "I wanna get into the story about how I found out I got traded," said Porter Jr. in a video on his YouTube channel "I, actually, was on a plane over here to Saint Tropez, and I'm over here trying to enjoy my time before I get back to work, before I head back to Denver… I saw a text I got from my agent, and someone in the front office over there in Denver. I think it was John Wallace, just saying, 'Yo, can you get on a phone call? It's urgent.' I immediately knew what was up," added the newest Brooklyn Net. Making the most out of Jokic This offseason has been filled with fireworks across the league. Superstars getting moved, title contenders reshuffling their rosters and front offices doing everything to give them better chances for that elusive Larry O'Brien trophy. Advertisement The Denver Nuggets, who won it all in 2023 but failed to make another deep playoff run in the following two years, clearly weren't going to just sit back and hope for a different outcome with the same group. Despite having arguably the best player in the league, Nikola Jokic, they saw firsthand how important it is to have a reliable and versatile supporting cast. MPJ was one of the key pieces during their championship run, a 6'10" wing who could score at all three levels and stretch the floor for Jokic. But injuries, inconsistency and that massive contract became hard to justify. So, Denver decided to move on. They sent Porter and a future first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Cam Johnson, a two-way forward who brings defense, shooting and, most importantly, a more sustainable contract. It was a tough decision, especially considering Porter's connection to the team, but the Nuggets clearly felt the need to shake things up and make the most of their current title window. While there's always some disappointment when a franchise moves on from a player, especially the one that drafted them and they helped win a ring with, Porter seems at peace with it. In fact, he's embracing the next step of his journey. Brooklyn doesn't come with the same expectations as Denver, and in a way, that could be a blessing for the Missouri product. He will have less pressure, which was something that evidently held him back in the recent playoff runs. Alongside Johnson, they brought in Tim Hardaway Jr., Jonas Valanciunas and reunited with Bruce Brown in what looks like an ultimate push to make the most of Joker's window.
