IND vs ENG: India's young batting core shows signs of stability amid transition

Rishabh Pant of India is congratulated by KL Rahul (Photo by) India's buildup to the Test series in England largely revolved around the void created by the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Over the last week, the rather unproven batting lineup helped ease some concerns. The transition is still at an early stage. Yet, it's inspiring. KL Rahul, the most experienced batter at the age of 33, is ironically but reassuringly still a part of this transition. He has offered stability at the top of the order that has eased the pressure on the middle order in both the innings at Headingly. It's not that the core of the batting was made of spring chickens. Rahul, captain Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant have all been playing together for five years now. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! What was supposed to be a pressure point now seems to have liberated them — carrying the tag of lead batters in the team. Former India selector Devang Gandhi highlighted the clarity in Rahul's batting which was lacking during his 10-year long Test career. Gandhi puts it down to 'coming out of the shadows of big names' in the team. 'What has worked for these players is that they have been given the primary responsibility to carry India's batting forward. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Rishabh has been consistent in Test cricket barring the last tour of Australia. But Rahul and Gill's approach looked so different,' Gandhi told TOI. India's Bowlers Hit Top Gear in Birmingham Nets | Arshdeep, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Prep Hard Gandhi recalled how Rahul could never settle down in the batting lineup during his tenure as a selector. 'If one observes his career closely, he never got a fixed batting number even in Tests. Sometimes he was also used at No. 3 and No. 6. It was a period when the team management wanted to be very flexible with the playing XI. He was batting at No. 6 even before the last Australia tour. Now, it's clear that he will be opening as a lead batter. That is showing in his batting,' Gandhi remarked. In a way, Gill's career could be equated with Rahul's. With his inconsistency as an opener, the previous team management convinced him to bat at No. 3. 'Both Rahul and Gill are assured of their batting numbers. During our days as selectors, Rahul Dravid played Gill in the middle order on 'A' tours, and he played one of his best first-class knocks in the middle order. They probably feel far more secure of their places now. They must be relishing being the leaders in India's batting lineup,' Gandhi said. India Sweat it out at the Nets in Birmingham Ahead of the 2nd Test vs England The regulars in the batting lineup got off to a good start to usher in the new era of Indian Test batting. However, one can't bet on all of them firing together throughout the series. The transition will truly be complete when India finds near-definite options at No. 3 and No. 6. Sai Sudharsan's Test debut and Karun Nair's comeback journey are two fabulous stories. But they need to quickly establish themselves as concrete answers. Gandhi believes there's still room for Shreyas Iyer in the Test middle order. 'It's probably harsh to still label him as someone who struggles against short deliveries. Iyer has proven he has worked on it, and he has been facing international quality bowling round the year besides performing in domestic cricket. At his age, Nair will have less time to prove himself,' he said. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? Where the team management needs to be careful is maintaining this secure environment for its batters. Dealing with Sudharsan will be crucial. 'One must avoid putting Sudharsan through what Rahul went through in his career. He is young. If you have invested in him then stick with him. He should have a definite role and batting number. He looked good in the second innings in Leeds. He also did well on the 'A' tour of Australia last year,' Gandhi said. The average Indian cricket fan felt good when India registered five centuries in the Headingly Test. Well, the foundation has been laid. It's time to build on it. IND vs ENG: 'Too many captains…' — Ex-India spinner blames KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant for chaos at Headingley

The India team huddle (Photo by) Former India spinner Murali Karthik has raised concerns about multiple players giving on-field instructions during India's first Test match against England at Headingley Cricket Ground, specifically pointing to KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant 's involvement in field placement decisions alongside captain Shubman Gill . The criticism comes after England's five-wicket victory over India in the opening Test of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy 2025, which has given them a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The situation emerged on Day 5 of the Headingley Test, particularly after Prasidh Krishna claimed two wickets in the second session. Multiple senior players were observed giving different instructions on the field, creating what Karthik perceived as confusion in the team's leadership structure. 03:36 India Sweat it out at the Nets in Birmingham Ahead of the 2nd Test vs England "At one point I felt there were too many captains," said Kartik on Cricbuzz. "I just couldn't understand that. KL Rahul was making hand movements, Rishabh Pant was also doing it, and so was Shubman Gill who is actually the man appointed as captain. I couldn't understand those multiple hand signals. You wouldn't want to complicate things. There is only one captain." Karthik further elaborated on acceptable levels of senior player involvement versus what he witnessed during the match. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unbelievable: Calculator Shows The Value Of Your House Instantly (Take a Look) Home Value Calculator Search Now Undo "A senior player making slight changes here and there, correcting someone slightly when they feel they are slightly in the wrong position, sending third man or short fine, mid-on, mid-off; these are all fine occasionally. However, so many players taking calls so frequently is not a good sign." Quiz: Who's that IPL player? The Indian team has now moved to Birmingham for the second Test match, scheduled to take place at Edgbaston Stadium from July 2 to July 6, 2025. Reports indicate that India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah might miss the upcoming match due to workload management considerations. Meanwhile, England has announced their squad for the second Test match, with Jofra Archer being included in the lineup. The England squad features Ben Stokes as captain, along with players like Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, and Chris Woakes. The series, named the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy 2025, continues to generate interest as both teams prepare for the crucial second Test. England's victory in the first Test has set the tone for what promises to be an engaging series between the two cricket powerhouses. The match at Edgbaston will be crucial for India as they look to level the series, while England will aim to build on their momentum from the Headingley victory. The focus will be on how India addresses the leadership dynamics on the field, following Karthik's observations about the multiple decision-makers during the first Test. WI vs AUS: Travis Head creates World Test Championship record, becomes first player to ...

Australia's Travis Head (AP Photo/Ricardo Mazalan) Travis Head made history by becoming the first player to win 10 Man of the Match awards in the World Test Championship after his twin fifties helped Australia defeat West Indies by 159 runs in the first Test of their three-match series. Head scored 59 in the first innings and 61 in the second innings on a challenging pitch where both teams struggled to score runs. Australia were bowled out for 180 in their first innings before restricting West Indies to 190. The hosts then posted 310 in their second innings before dismissing West Indies for 141 to secure the victory and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. His first innings half-century helped Australia reach a fighting total, while his second innings contribution helped the team recover from a precarious position of 61-4. The Australian middle order provided vital support after Head's dismissal. Beau Webster scored 63 and Alex Carey made 65 to help Australia build a match-winning lead. India Sweat it out at the Nets in Birmingham Ahead of the 2nd Test vs England Head's achievement of 10 Man of the Match awards in the World Test Championship puts him well ahead of his closest competitors. Ben Stokes and Joe Root have won five awards each, while Harry Brook has four to his name. The left-handed batter has been a consistent performer in the World Test Championship. He is Australia's fourth-highest run-scorer in the competition with 3199 runs in 50 games, including eight centuries and 15 fifties, behind Steve Smith , Marnus Labuschagne, and Usman Khawaja. Head also reached another milestone by becoming the fourth batter to hit 400 fours in the World Test Championship. He achieved this feat in 83 innings, joining an elite group including Joe Root (576 fours in 119 innings), Marnus Labuschagne (476 fours in 96 innings), and Steve Smith (443 fours in 91 innings). Quiz: Who's that IPL player? "I would have liked to score a bit more, missed out on a few runs. The communication was important, the conditions were tricky and we did exceptionally well to get to 300 on that surface. I was more positive on Day 1 when the game was up for the taking, last night I was desperate to end the day unbeaten, momentum was the key over here, we wanted to build a partnership, we were slow, but it worked out well (on his stand with Beau Webster)," Head said at the post-match presentation. Head praised his batting partner Webster's contribution: "He has played a great deal of FC cricket, has got experience in all conditions and situations. You tend to do well then and he took the responsibility." The Australian batter expressed his disappointment about his performance in the World Test Championship final but was pleased to contribute to the team's victory against West Indies. "I try to contribute every time I go out there, was disappointed at not making runs at Lords (in the WTC final) despite my good form, was nice to get runs and contribute to the team victory here," Head added. Brooklyn Nets jersey history No. 20 - Pace Mannion (1986-87)

The Brooklyn Nets have 52 jersey numbers worn by over 600 different players over the course of their history since the franchise was founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), when the team was known as the "New Jersey Americans". Since then, that league has been absorbed by the NBA with the team that would later become the New York Nets and New Jersey Nets before settling on the name by which they are known today, bringing their rich player and jersey history with them to the league of today. To commemorate the players who played for the Nets over the decades wearing those 52 different jersey numbers, Nets Wire is covering the entire history of the franchise's jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. The 21st of those 52 different numbers is jersey No. 20, which has has had a total of 28 players wear the number in the history of the team. The second of those players wearing No. 20 played in the (then) New Jersey (now, Brooklyn) Nets era, forward alum Pace Mannion. After ending his college career at Utah, Mannion was picked up with the 43rd overall selection of the 1983 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors. The Salt Lake City, Utah native would play the first season of his pro career with the Warriors, and also played for Jazz before he signed with New Jersey in 1986. His stay with the team would span just 23 games before he would be waived by the team. During his time suiting up for the Nets, Mannion wore only jersey No. 20 and put up 3.6 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.
