Relative of Cyberjaya murder victim tries to confront main suspect
PETALING JAYA : A man, believed to be a family member of the university student who was killed in Cyberjaya last month, attempted to confront the main suspect in the investigation earlier today.
According to Berita Harian, the man tried to approach the suspect as he was being escorted from the Sepang magistrates' courtroom following a remand extension hearing this morning.
The man shouted at the male suspect from a distance, claiming that he had 'killed my sister'.
Magistrate Khairatul Animah Jelani earlier granted a seven-day extension of the remand order for the male suspect as well as two others, effective from July 4 to July 10.
The earlier remand order, granted by sessions court judge Azaraorani Abdul Rahman on June 27, expired today.
Police arrested the trio, aged 19 and 20, around Johor Bahru, Johor, and Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan, between 9am on June 26 and 2am on June 27.
Sepang police chief Norhizam Bahaman previously said that all three suspects were known to the victim, University of Cyberjaya student Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, who was found dead in her condominium unit by a friend at about 10am on June 24.
She was staying in the unit with five other students, but her housemates had reportedly returned to their hometowns for the holidays on June 21.
Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan yesterday said that the main suspect in the murder case used a key and access card provided by his girlfriend, who had returned to her hometown, to enter the apartment.
He said the suspect took advantage of the victim being alone in the apartment while waiting to sit her final paper.
After allegedly assaulting and killing her, the unemployed suspect is said to have robbed her, taking her mobile phone, laptop, and ATM card which he used to spend RM200.
Lawyer M Manoharan, representing the main suspect, questioned the move by the police to issue a public statement suggesting 'bad intentions' on the part of his client.
He said the investigation was ongoing and that the police should refrain from making such claims. He added that under the law, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
'We have raised our objection to the magistrate regarding the actions of the Selangor police chief of making statements and revealing portions of evidence that could prejudice my client's case.
'This is a very serious matter. The police's role is to investigate. It is our wise, educated, and respected judges who have the authority to determine who is guilty and who is not,' he told reporters outside the courtroom.

This was revealed by deputy women, family and community development minister Noraini Ahmad, who said her ministry is compiling details of the students affected, Bernama reported. She said the social welfare department (JKM) is assisting the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who sustained permanent disabilities by processing their applications for the OKU card. She added that the ministry is also reaching out to those who suffered other long-term injuries in the June 9 incident. 'The exact number of affected students is still being gathered as we are awaiting medical assessments,' the Wanita Umno chief told reporters after a party meeting in Kepala Batas, Penang today. She said counselling sessions are ongoing for survivors and the families of those who died, including the family in the Perodua Alza involved in the crash, as many remain traumatised. 'Ongoing psychological support is crucial, especially for those grieving the loss of loved ones. I visited the Alza family yesterday and they are still visibly affected,' she said, according to Bernama. Fifteen people were killed when a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jerteh, Terengganu to the Tanjung Malim campus overturned and hit a car with four passengers, before crashing into the barrier on the side of the road. The accident involved a total of 48 victims, 13 of whom died at the scene and two others at the hospital. Separately, higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said universities must closely monitor any initiatives taken independently by their students, including the chartering of tour buses to return to their hometowns during the holiday season. He said such oversight was crucial to prevent any untoward incidents involving students. 'I urge universities to maintain communication and monitor any self-initiated plans by students,' he told reporters after visiting the home of the late Nurly Sahirah Azman, one of the UPSI students who died in the bus crash, in Kampung Gong Pasir, Kerandang, in Jerteh today. Zambry said the ministry is reviewing various views and suggestions for improvement following the tragic incident, including proposals to schedule student travel during the day instead of at night. 'We take note of all the concerns raised, especially on social media, to prevent any untoward incidents,' he said.

Speaking to FMT, Nancy said such acts are not considered a criminal offence as long as there are no elements of wrongdoing, such as physical abuse. She was commenting about a recent case of a 14-day-old baby boy who was left at the baby hatch of a private medical centre in Kuching. The Borneo Post reported that the baby was found fully clothed with a feeding bottle and a handwritten note that read 'Izzy Haziq (L), 14/6/2025 @ 11.40PM.' The case has sparked debate online, with some social media users questioning the purpose of baby hatches, while others questioned the need for the welfare department to trace the mother. Nancy said the department encourages mothers to come forward to help register their child's birth and confirm their citizenship, as babies left at baby hatches must have their birth, nationality, and guardianship status verified for legal protection. 'This requires the involvement of the mother – even in a minimal capacity – to assist with investigation and documentation by authorities such as the national registration department. 'All information shared by the mother is confidential and protected by law. The welfare department ensures this process is carried out with respect, ethics, and in line with the best interests of the child,' she said. Nancy said there are mechanisms in place to legally register babies even if the mothers do not come forward, thus ensuring the child is not left undocumented.

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Sabah youth and sports minister Ellron Alfred Angin has denied a news report alleging that he accepted a bribe of RM530,000 in connection with the alleged mining scandal in Sabah. Ellron said the accusations in the report by Malaysiakini are 'baseless slander driven by immature political motives to tarnish my reputation and integrity as an elected representative'. 'I have always upheld the principles of integrity, accountability and clean governance in line with the Sabah state government's commitment to combat corruption,' he said in a Facebook post. 'I have instructed my legal team to take firm action against any party spreading these false allegations.' The Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) deputy president's denial follows a rebuttal from party president Jeffrey Kitingan, who was also implicated in the Malaysiakini report, along with four other Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leaders. On Monday, Sabah assistant industrial development and entrepreneurship minister Andi Suryady Bandy, and Sindumin assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob were charged with receiving bribes related to mineral prospecting licence applications in the state. Yusof is also the chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Bhd, the state government's investment arm. Businessman Albert Wei was charged with bribing them. The alleged scandal was reported last year after a series of videos linking several Sabah assemblymen to it were leaked. The videos allegedly depicted discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in the state. In February, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the initial batch of videos lacked credibility as they had been heavily edited.
