Scotmid shopper spared jail over mashed potato attack on store worker
A Scotmid shopper who set upon a worker with mashed potatoes has been spared jail over the attack. Peter Fergus had been warned he could be caged over the carnage.
But the 46-year-old has avoided prison over the incident, which saw him having a meltdown in the middle of the supermarket branch in Edinburgh.
The incident took place at the Restalrig Road store on March 17, 2025, and saw him smacking the worker with a packet of mashed potatoes, Edinburgh Live reports.
He pleaded guilty to assaulting the retail worker by striking him with the pack of mashed potato, lunging at him and attempting to headbutt him.

He was warned by a sheriff he could face a custodial sentence, but returned for sentencing last week at the city's sheriff court where he was given a community payback order and a fine of £700.
Last month the court heard how Fergus entered the store on March 17, 2025, before being approached by a member of staff who asked if he required assistance.
Fergus became "aggressive and confrontational" before lunging towards him, striking him with the packet of mashed potato and repeatedly punching him on the head. The shocking incident was captured on CCTV.
Police were called and Fergus was traced a short time later. The Restalrig local pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting a retail worker engaged at the time in retail work and was told as part of his bail conditions he was not to enter the store.

Australian man in court after Stone of Destiny glass 'broken' at Scottish museum

More info Get the latest Edinburgh Live breaking news on WhatsApp A man arrested for allegedly damaging the glass which protects the Stone of Destiny has been remanded in custody. Perth Museum was evacuated amid claims a man in a kilt tried to smash through a display case that houses the stone - which used to be displayed in Edinburgh Castle - on Saturday, July 12, reports the Daily Record. A 35-year-old man was detained by police and taken in to custody. Arnaud Harixcalde Logan appeared at Perth Sheriff Court on Monday, July 14. Logan faced a single charge of malicious mischief - intentionally damaging property - during the private hearing. The 35-year-old, whose address was given on court papers as Sydney, Australia, made no plea to the charge. He was remanded in custody and the case against him was continued for prosecutors to investigate further. Visitors to the attraction said the alleged incident was "like something out of a historical drama or an action film". Museum tours were brought to an end as the building was evacuated and then stormed by police officers. Perth Museum said the historic stone, used in the coronation of Scottish kings for hundreds of years, was not damaged. Police Scotland also confirmed nobody was injured in the incident. Tourist Elle Alvarez, visiting Scotland from the Philippines, posted a video of the incident on Facebook. She said: "It's honestly surreal, like something out of a historical drama or an action film. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to finish our tour because of the incident. "Huge credit to the staff at Perth Museum for handling the situation with such calm and professionalism, making sure all visitors were safe and looked after." The 150kg object, also known as the Stone of Scone, was taken from Scotland during the Wars of Independence. It was lodged in King Edward's carved-oak coronation throne at Westminster Abbey where it remained for 700 years. Over Christmas in 1950, four Glasgow University students notoriously managed to steal the stone from the Abbey and temporarily return it to Scotland. The stone returned for permanent display in Scotland in 1996 at Edinburgh Castle, before being moved to its current home in Perth last year, 2024. A spokesperson for Culture Perth and Kinross said: "We can confirm there was an incident at Perth Museum where a man was arrested. "Perth Museum was evacuated as a precaution and there was no damage to any artefacts on display. We are assisting Police Scotland with their inquiries."

Creep snared by paedophile hunters made chilling confession on livestream
David Smith was confronted by members of the group and when they asked how many times he had sex chats with children he said: "It must be in double figures." A creep who was caught out by vigilante paedophile hunters confessed on a livestream to grooming at least 10 under-age girls. David Smith was confronted by members of the group and when they asked how many times he had sex chats with children he said: "It must be in double figures." Smith, 52, used his own name and claimed to be 20 years younger when he sent pictures of his own genitals to girls he believed were 13 and 14. He was unaware he had been duped into communicating with three decoy profiles until the paedo hunters turned up on his doorstep to quiz and film him. Smith had told the 'girls' - who were adults posing as children and using adapted images of themselves for profile pics - that he was "horny" and encouraged them to carry out sex acts. Fiscal depute Jennifer Bairner told Perth Sheriff Court that Smith sent friend requests to the decoy Facebook profiles and claimed he was a hotel worker in his 30s from Scotland. He told one: "It's OK, it will be our secret" after sending a picture of his erect penis. He sent further explicit images after asking the girl if she was at school at the time. At one point he moved the conversation to WhatsApp and sent another picture of his penis to one girl "so you know it's me from this." The grooming of the girls lasted for several months until the vigilante group tracked his home address and turned up on June 10 last year to confront him. "They attended to challenge the accused," Mrs Bairner said. "It was on a Facebook livestream on the Child Protection Team UK. He admitted he was sexually attracted to children." Asked how many he had communicated with, he replied: "It must be in double figures. I'm sorry I did this. I don't go looking for children. I've not molested any children." Smith, from Perth, admitted three grooming charges as well as a charge of having child pornography showing images of children as young as three years old. Sentence was deferred for background reports and Sheriff Simon Collins remanded Smith in custody.
