MoU to revamp Doi Ghat as part of Hooghly riverfront development
The Doi Ghat holds historical significance as a key landing point for the dairy trade between Howrah and Kolkata.
The name Doi Ghat is derived from 'Doi' or curd in Bengali, reflecting its past as a hub where dairy products and other goods arrived in earthen pots from Howrah.
Howrah was once known for its flourishing dairy sector.
Strategically located at the confluence of the Adi Ganga and the Hooghly's main channel, the ghat played an important role in riverine trade and daily exchanges between rural Bengal and the then growing city of Calcutta.
The ghat will undergo redevelopment to enhance its heritage character while modernising its infrastructure.
The project will also improve access and public utilities at the site.
Similar partnerships have already been undertaken for the renovation of Kumartuli and Nimtala ghats.
Once completed, the revamped Doi Ghat is expected to contribute to tourism, community engagement, and the preservation of Kolkata's riverine heritage. PTI BSM SBN SBN

MediaTek sees major boost as Indian EV makers adopt AI, HPC solutions
Vast AI talent pool and electric vehicle makers' attitude to adopt artificial intelligence and powerful computing offer a big opportunity in India for MediaTek, a senior company official said. MediaTek Director for Product Marketing -- Automotive Platform -- Rita Wu told PTI the semiconductor company is looking to penetrate deeper in India's automotive sector with a strategic focus on AI, scalable system-on-chips (SoCs), and next-gen connectivity solutions. "I think the Indian market has a lot of talent in AI. The second thing is OEMs' (Original Equipment Manufacturers) attitude. They are very interested in AI and want to try their best to adapt to the offloads in their vehicles. It's not only AI, but they are also looking for powerful computing to support more high-end solutions. That very important and very good for India market," Wu said. Wu outlined three major industry shifts shaping their roadmap agentic -- AI adoption, increasing demand for high-performance compute capabilities (CPU, GPU, NPU), and enhanced power efficiency tailored for electric vehicles (EVs). She said that demand for energy efficiency technology will be high in EVs because power is very crucial for the segment. From making chips for mobile phones, MediaTek has diversified offerings to providing technology for the automobile sector, to satellite communications. MediaTek Automotive Platform Director for Europe Product Marketing Sharique Khan said that even EV two-wheeler makers in India have started using the company's AI-enabled chips for infotainment systems. "We see that in the next three to four years, there will be adoption of AI and high computing, depending on the cost segment in India, from premium and scale down to the entry segment," Khan said. He said the rising demand for AI-powered cockpit infotainment across segments in India is one of the key aspects that makes it strategically important for MediaTek. When asked about volumes for semiconductors, Khan said volumes typically start with premium segments and eventually cascade down. He said customised solutions will also play an important role in the Indian EV market.

Stephane Deblaise appointed as CEO of Renault Group in India
New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) French automaker Renault Group on Monday announced the appointment of Stephane Deblaise as Chief Executive Officer, Indian operations, effective September 1, 2025. In the role, he will be responsible for defining and executing the group's strategy in India, the automaker said in a statement. All Renault Group entities in the country will report to him, it added. Deblaise will report directly to Francois Provost, Renault Group Chief of Procurement, Partnerships and Public Affairs Officer. Since 2022, Deblaise has served as CEO of Renault Korea, where he led key transformation initiatives, including positioning the company as a global development and production hub for mid-and large-sized vehicles and modernising the Busan plant for multi-energy vehicle production, the automaker stated. In addition to his current responsibilities as Managing Director of Renault India Pvt Ltd (RIPL), Venkatram Mamillapalle will support Deblaise on corporate affairs in India to help structure the Group's mid-term growth strategy in the region, it added. New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) A report of the parliamentary committee set up to scrutinise the new Income Tax Bill, 2025, which would replace the six-decade old Income Tax Act, is scheduled to be tabled in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The simplified Income Tax Bill, which is half the size of the 1961 Income Tax Act, seeks to achieve tax certainty by minimising the scope of litigation and fresh interpretation. The new bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha, has a word count of 2.6 lakh, lower than 5.12 lakh in the I-T Act. The number of sections is 536, as against 819 effective sections in the existing law. The number of chapters has also been halved to 23 from 47, according to the FAQs (frequently asked questions) issued by the I-T department. The Income Tax Bill 2025 has 57 tables, compared to 18 in the existing Act and removed 1,200 provisos and 900 explanations. Provisions relating to exemptions and TDS/TCS have been made crispier in the Bill by putting them in a tabular format, while the chapter for not-for-profit organisations has been made comprehensive with use of plain language. As a result of this, the word count has come down by 34,547. In a taxpayer-friendly move, the Bill replaces the term 'previous year' as mentioned in the Income Tax Act, 1961 with 'tax year'. Also, the concept of assessment year has been done away with. Currently, for income earned in the previous year (say 2023-24), tax is paid in assessment year (say 2024-25). This previous year and assessment year (AY) concept has been removed and only tax year under the simplified bill has been brought in. While introducing the Bill in the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman had said that 'substantial changes' have been made in the Bill. The number of words have been halved from 5.12 lakh, and sections reduced from 819 to 236. Following introduction, the Bill was referred to the select committee of the Lok Sabha and the committee was mandated to submit its report by the first day of next session.
