Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's return to India likely by mid-August, grand reception planned
Shukla, who piloted the Axiom-4 mission, and his three crew mates : mission commander Peggy Whitson, and mission specialists Tibor Kapu and Slawosz Uznanski, returned to Earth on Wednesday. Following a picture-perfect splashdown off the California coast, the crew were ferried on a chopper to Houston for medical examination, mission debriefing and other procedures.
The Indian Express has learned from reliable sources at the Department of Space (DoS) that Group Captain Shukla is expected to arrive on August 14 or two-three days later.
'He is expected to arrive in New Delhi. There are plans to arrange a grand reception for Group Captain Shukla in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,' an official said.
On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi had put out congratulatory messages to Shukla on social media platform 'X', welcoming him back to Earth after the successful mission.
Meanwhile, Uznanski of Poland representing the European Space Agency (ESA) reached Cologne Bonn in Germany on Thursday. He will undergo post-space mission debriefing and other mandatory activities in the next few days.
Meanwhile, Union minister Jitendra Singh said Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is expected to arrive in India by August 17 following a series of post-mission procedures.
'There are certain SOPs to be followed… His rehabilitation, debriefing sessions and a series of discussions with Team ISRO. We might expect him in Delhi by August 17,' Singh told PTI video. Calling the mission 'unprecedented', Singh said the experiments conducted by Shukla during his stay in the orbital laboratory were closely linked to human survival and life in microgravity. 'These experiments will be useful not just for Indians, but for all of humanity,' he said. 'It is a moment of immense joy for India,' he said.

Starliner that stranded Sunita Williams in space will not fly until 2026
It does not look like Boeing's Starliner will get clearance to fly to space till International Space Station (ISS) is experiencing one of its busiest periods on record, with spacecraft arrivals and departures occurring almost every few weeks in a flurry of global and commercial early July, the private Ax-4 mission departed the ISS to make way for NASA's upcoming Crew-11 mission, while SpaceX's Cargo Dragon wrapped up its latest resupply in late Meanwhile, Russia's Progress 92 cargo ship docked on July 5, joining a lineup of international vehicles currently berthed at the orbital to NASA, at present, four spacecraft—including SpaceX Dragon, Soyuz MS-27, and two Progress resupply ships—are docked to the ISS, supporting a dynamic crew rotation and steady high frequency of traffic is expected to continue, as up to six more vehicles are scheduled to launch to the station before year's end, carrying crew members, research payloads, and new technology demonstrations. No immediate health concerns for Shubhanshu Shukla: ISRO
New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation ( ISRO ) on Thursday said initial health assessments of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla , who returned to Earth after a 20-day space mission, indicated that he was in stable condition with no immediate concerns. Shukla returned to Earth on June 15 when the Dragon Grace spacecraft carrying him and three other astronauts of the Axiom-4 mission splashed down off San Diego coast in California. Preliminary health checks were carried out on the astronauts on the recovery ship soon after they exited the spacecraft. Later, the astronauts were airlifted by helicopter from the recovery ship to the mainland for further medical evaluations and debriefing sessions. Later, Shukla was flown to Houston for a week-long rehabilitation program to mitigate any adverse effects of microgravity. "This is being administered by Axiom's flight surgeon and ISRO's flight surgeon is also participating in this program," ISRO said. The rehabilitation programme includes a series of medical checks, especially cardiovascular assessments, musculoskeletal tests and psychological debriefing. The rehabilitation activities also focus on monitoring physical and mental health, addressing any effects of microgravity, and preparing him for a return to normal activities. During the 20-day mission, Shukla spent 18 days on the International Space Station , conducting microgravity experiments designed by ISRO as also by NASA. The astronauts orbited the earth 320 times and travelled over 135.18 lakh kms during their stay in space

Malayalam actress once-secret husband is astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's Gaganyaan crewmate. Why they kept their marriage hidden for months. Who is Prasanth Nair?
In a rare moment where cinema met space, Malayalam actor Lena has tugged at the internet's heartstrings with an emotional Instagram post. The video shows her husband, Indian Air Force pilot and astronaut Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair , warmly embracing astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and the Axiom-4 crew as they returned from space. What made the reel even more moving was Lena's clever choice of background score—Hans Zimmer's iconic Interstellar theme, which gave the real-life footage a cinematic, almost surreal, touch. Who is Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair? As per the Axiom Space website, Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair is a decorated Indian Air Force test pilot and astronaut. A recipient of the prestigious Sword of Honour at the Hyderabad Air Force Academy. He was born on August 26, 1976, in Thiruvazhiyad, Kerala. He graduated top of his class at the US Air Force Air Command and Staff College in Alabama. Nair was among the four astronauts handpicked by ISRO for the Gaganyaan mission —India's first human spaceflight—and underwent rigorous training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Russia. On February 27, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially revealed him as part of India's astronaut team. He served as the backup pilot for Axiom Mission 4 . Had astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla been unable to fly, Nair would have taken his place on the historic mission. Given his integral training role, he formed a close bond with the crew, making Shukla's emotional welcome all the more heartfelt. His secret marriage to Malayalam actress On February 27, 2024, Lena also revealed their secret marriage—news she had been legally required to keep under wraps until the official announcement of Nair's role. She confirmed that she married Group Captain Prasanth on January 17, 2024, in a traditional ceremony. The post included a montage of clips. About Malayalam actress Lena Actress Lena has worked in popular movies like Pushpaka Vimanam, Ouseppinte Osyath, Kanyaka Talkies, Spirit, Traffic and many other movies. She was last seen in Nancy Rani and has Valathu Vashathe Kallan in the pipeline. About Gaganyaan Mission India's ambitious human spaceflight programme, Gaganyaan, has now entered its final phase, with the country gearing up to send its first astronauts into space in early 2027. This milestone mission will see a crew of three Indian astronauts launched into a 400-km low Earth orbit for a three-day mission, culminating in a safe splashdown in Indian sea waters. The four Indian Air Force pilots, selected as astronaut-designates, have already completed their foundational training in Russia. They are currently undergoing mission-specific training in India, which includes rigorous assessments of their physical health, psychological fitness, and simulation-based readiness.
