CBS Sports: Can DJ Lagway save Billy Napier's job for good?

USA Today4 days ago
Florida football's late-season turnaround in 2024 might have saved head coach Billy Napier's job. Now the pressure is on the Gators' skipper to prove it wasn't a fluke–and with DJ Lagway under center, the path back to national relevance is clearer than it's been in years.
As CBS Sports' Brandon Marcello detailed, the Gators' 1-2 stumble last September nearly sealed Napier's fate. A blowout loss to the Miami Hurricanes left Gator Nation bracing for another reset.
Instead, Napier doubled down. Florida ripped off eight wins, took down ranked LSU and Ole Miss teams in back-to-back weeks, and finished with its first winning season since 2020–capped by a four-game win streak and a bowl victory.
"We built really good chemistry, morale and connection with that group," Napier told CBS Sports, crediting his players for taking ownership and buying into the turnaround. "The football wasn't very good the first month, and they really took ownership of that. Maybe if you didn't have that type of character, I don't think we could have done that."
The challenge now? Sustain it. Florida enters 2025 with real College Football Playoff hopes but also sky-high expectations that Napier's 19-19 record won't survive if the Gators slide backward again.
The biggest reason for optimism is Lagway. The sophomore quarterback was cleared for full participation in June after offseason injuries and, as Marcello noted, the numbers don't lie: Florida was 6-0 in games Lagway finished last year and just 2-5 when he didn't.
With four starting offensive linemen returning, one of the SEC's best wide receiver rooms reloaded by UCLA transfer J. Michael Sturdivant and a defense that looked revitalized late last fall, the pieces are there for the Florida Gators to take a step back toward the CFP.
Napier summed up the belief simply: "Man, we got a chance to be pretty good."

Florida Projected to have Second Straight Big NBA Draft in 2026

Florida Projected to have Second Straight Big NBA Draft in 2026 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Florida Gators had a very successful 2025 NBA Draft this past week with all three members of their backcourt trio being selected. Advertisement Walter Clayton Jr. was picked by the Utah Jazz with the 18th overall selection in round one while Alijah Martin (Toronto Raptors) and Will Richard (Golden State Warriors) went in the second round. This marked the second time in program history that UF had at least three players selected in the same draft. The only other time was in 2007, after Florida's back-to-back national championships when the Gators sent five members to the NBA. Looking ahead, Florida still has a wealth of possible NBA-ready talent for the 2025-26 season. On Friday, USA Today released its "Way-too-early" 2026 NBA Draft first-round projections, which named three Gators going in the first 29 picks. Florida Gators players hoist the trophy. Robert Deutsch-Imagn Images In the mock draft, USA Today dubbed Boogie Fland, Alex Condon and Thomas Haugh worthy of first-round selections next year. Advertisement Fland was marked as the No. 10 overall prospect for 2026. He is entering his first season with the Gators after transferring from Arkansas this offseason. As a freshman, Fland put up 13.5 points, 5.1 assists and over a steal per game with the Razorbacks. Now, in the absence of Florida's three-headed monster, Fland promises to have a big season. The national publication labeled Condon No. 19 in its mock draft after a very successful sophomore season at UF. He declared for this year's draft but ultimately withdrew his name. The Australian forward averaged over 10 points with 7.5 boards per game last year in the Gators' run to the national title. Condon will play an even bigger role next season, leading to a better draft position. Haugh, the No. 29 prospect, like Condon, tested the waters of the 2025 NBA Draft before deciding to come back to Todd Golden's Gators for one more year. Entering his junior year, Haugh will likely be in Florida's starting five after making just five starts last season. Off the bench, Haugh scored 9.8 points per contest to go along with over six rebounds. Although UF will miss its three leading scorers from its 2025 NCAA championship, Golden's reloaded roster will no doubt grace the NBA draft boards in 2026. Florida's 7-foot-9 Center Shines Against Team USA

Florida's 7-foot-9 Center Shines Against Team USA originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Florida Gators will attempt to win back-to-back national championships for the second time in program history when they take the floor for the 2025-26 season. After an incredible year, head coach Todd Golden and Florida had to retool their roster in an attempt to win another title. Advertisement As part of that revised roster will be the Guinness World Record holder for tallest teenager, redshirt freshman Olivier Rioux. Before the 7-foot-9 center takes the floor for the first time as a Gator, after not playing a single minute during his first year in Gainesville, he is showcasing his talent on the global stage. Florida Gators center Olivier Rioux© Stephen Lew-Imagn Images Rioux is representing his home country of Canada this summer in the 2025 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup. On Friday, he and the rest of Canada's top teenage talent faced off against Team USA, ultimately losing 108-102 in a quarterfinal matchup at the Lausanne Arena in Switzerland. Advertisement Rioux logged 12 minutes while starting at center for Canada, notching three points on 1-for-2 shooting from the floor. While his point total doesn't jump off the stat sheet, Rioux filled up the rest of his box score with two rebounds, two blocks and one steal. He played limited minutes due to getting in foul trouble, ending the game with four personals. With the loss, Rioux and Canada's run in the World Cup is now over, while Team USA will take on New Zealand in the semifinals on Saturday. The former three-star recruit from IMG Academy finishes with nine total points in five appearances for Team Canada in the tournament. He also ends with nine rebounds. Now, as Rioux's run with Team Canada is over for the summer, his attention will turn back to the Gators. While he may not play a huge role on Golden's squad this season, he will most likely be a part of Florida's run to claim a second straight national title. What the Jazz Trading Collin Sexton Means for Walter Clayton Jr.

What the Jazz Trading Collin Sexton Means for Walter Clayton Jr. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Utah Jazz have a bright future ahead of them in their backcourt. Utah selected uber-talented Ace Bailey with the No. 5 pick and traded up to get former Florida Gators guard Walter Clayton Jr. at No. 18. Advertisement With these incoming rookies, the Jazz traded guard Collin Sexton and a 2030 second-round draft pick to the Charlotte Hornets for 12-year NBA veteran center Jusuf Nurkic on Sunday, first reported by ESPN's Shams Charania. With the departure of Sexton, who started 112 games for the Jazz over the past two years while averaging over 18 points per contest, this opens up the door for Bailey, and possibly Clayton, to enter the starting five right away. Florida Gators guard Walter Clayton Jr. dribbles the ball against the Auburn Tigers during the men's Final Donnan-Imagn Images Utah will almost certainly begin the season with Bailey as a starter, but the question is will Clayton get the starting nod on opening night? It is clear the Jazz are very high on the national champion Clayton. Utah traded up three spots from 21st to 18th on draft night to select him two picks before the Miami Heat were on the clock. Before the draft, there were reports that Miami would select Clayton if he were available at No. 20. Advertisement Clayton is coming off an incredible senior year at Florida, earning first-team All-America honors, the only UF player to achieve this distinction in program history. He averaged over 18 points with three made 3-pointers per game en route to a national title with the Gators. With Clayton and Bailey set to make their NBA Summer League debuts in the next two weeks, it will be very interesting to see where they end up come late October.
