Former Iowa football QB entrenched in position battle after big quarterback domino falls

USA Today9 hours ago
With the transfer portal constantly in flux and players now circumventing the portal by becoming a walk-on, quarterbacks are shuffling faster than a three-step dropback.
The latest quarterback domino to fall is former BYU QB Jake Retzlaff joining Tulane as a walk-on. By withdrawing from school, he could walk-on at a new program without penalty. This route allows Retzlaff to bypass the transfer portal and join a new program.
Retzlaff joins Tulane's QB room, which is also accompanied by former Iowa Hawkeyes and Northwestern Wildcats quarterback Brendan Sullivan. The addition of Retzlaff now entrenches Sullivan in yet another topsy-turvy quarterback room, rather similar to his final year at Iowa, when he took over for Cade McNamara.
Jake Retzlaff withdrew from school at BYU just over a week ago amid honor code violations that would have led to a suspension. The suspension was stemming from a civil suit for sexual assault. The lawsuit has since been dismissed.
While at BYU, Retzlaff threw for 3,595 passing yards and 23 touchdowns to 15 interceptions. Brendan Sullivan, who spent two years at Northwestern, followed by 2024 at Iowa, has thrown for 1,778 yards, 13 TD, and 8 INT during his collegiate career. He has added 407 rushing yards and 7 rushing TDs.

Texas A&M is still 'in play' for 2026 5-star safety out of Mississippi

Texas A&M is still in pursuit of one of the top safety prospects in the 2026 recruiting class, even after landing four-stars Chance Collins and Tylan Wilson this month, as five-star Bralan Womack is set to announce his commitment on August 21, and according to one source, the Aggies remain in the mix despite two teams standing out late. Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman and defensive back coach Jordan Peterson have been two of the hottest recruiters in the country this summer, building strong relationships with every linebacker and defensive back commit in the 2026 class. On Monday, 247Sports insider Tom Loy provided more insight on Womack's recruiting journey, stating that while Auburn and Ohio State enter next month with the "most confidence" to land the standout DB, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko and Jay Bateman are still clearly in the mix and work overtime behind the scenes. "All four schools remain firmly in the mix. Coach Mike Elko and defensive coordinator Jay Bateman have Texas A&M in play, as discussions continue behind the scenes." Ohio State has received a 247Sports crystal ball prediction to land Womack, which would not be surprising at all, given the program's past success in developing safety prospects, including future first-round NFL draft selection Caleb Downs, who is entering his final season with the Buckeyes. Womack reportedly models his game after Downs, so Ohio State will likely remain the slight leader in his recruitment heading into August. Still, after landing four-star running back KJ Edwards and four-star safety/linebacker Tamarion Watkins, who were previously favored to commit elsewhere, Elko and his staff should never be counted out. According to 247Sports, Womack is currently positioned as the 13th-ranked prospect, the No. 1-ranked safety prospect, and No. 2-ranked prospect in Mississippi. Spartans pick up commitment from top 10 NHL Draft pick Porter Martone

Michigan State hockey has added another top tier future pro to its 2026-27 roster. High-end NHL prospect Porter Martone officially committed to the Spartans on Monday afternoon. Martone -- who is a winger -- committed to the Spartans over a number of other top college hockey programs, including Penn State -- who recently beat out the Spartans for Gavin McKenna. Martone was selected as the No. 6 overall pick by the Philadelphia Flyers in last month's NHL Entry Draft and becomes the second incoming freshman that was a top six NHL pick, joining Cayden Lindstrom. Martone played the last three seasons in the OHL and should have an instant impact on the Spartans next year. The addition of Martone is some welcomed good news for Michigan State hockey -- who recently experienced some tough breaks. As I previously mentioned, McKenna recently committed to Penn State over the Spartans, and shortly after that Isaac Howard elected to turn pro after being trading to the Edmonton Oilers. Michigan State heads into next season as a top five team nationally and with the addition of Martone could once again become the betting favorite to win it all. They'll certainly be right up there with Penn State after the big addition in Martone. Texas A&M is a finalist to land 2026 4-star safety out of Buford (GA)

Texas A&M's 2026 safety class already features four-stars Chance Collins and Tylan Wilson, while four-star Tamarion Watkins is expected to play linebacker with the Aggies once he makes his way to campus. On paper, Collins and Wilson are two of the most physical safety prospects in the cycle, and a perfect fit in coach Mike Elko and defensive coordinator Jay Bateman's defense. Elko and his staff might not be finished adding safety prospects, as four-star Buford, Georgia standout Nassir (Nascar) McCoy has placed Texas A&M in his final five program list. The Aggies will now compete with Miami, Michigan, Ole Miss, and Georgia heading into the fall. Right now, I expect the Rebels to land McCoy, as head coach Lane Kiffin and his staff have pursued him the hardest since his recruitment began. However, it's certainly encouraging that Texas A&M, despite not hosting McCoy for a visit, is still in the running, which proves that Elko's background, combined with defensive backs coach Jordan Peterson's influence, will continue to make gains on the recruiting trail this fall. Like Chance Collins and Tylan Wilson, McCoy is a hard-hitting safety with elite athleticism and closing speed, making use of his 6'2" frame every time the ball is in his vicinity. Like Texas A&M, Ole Miss values versatile safety prospects that could be used as hybrid linebackers in certain packages, similar to Tamarion Watkins. According to 247Sports, McCoy is currently positioned as the 37th-ranked safety prospect and the 49th-ranked prospect in Georgia. McCoy will announce his commitment on Friday, July 25.
