Tropical Storm Dexter forms in the Atlantic: Track storm path, see spaghetti models
Two months after the start of hurricane season, experts from the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, are monitoring Tropical Storm Dexter.
At 11 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, the center of Dexter was about 300 miles west-northwest of Bermuda, moving toward the east-northeast near 12 mph. A faster east-northeastward or northeastward motion was expected through early Tuesday, followed by a slower motion Tuesday and Wednesday. Maximum sustained winds were near 45 mph with higher gusts. Some slight strengthening was forecast during the next couple of days, and Dexter was likely to become post-tropical by Wednesday, accoding to the NHC.

The Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1 to Nov. 30 every year, with the most activity between August and October.

National Hurricane Center Although it is too early to determine a potential path if it takes shape, NHC meteorologists said the system is expected to drift west or northwest as the week progresses, which would bring it closer to the U.S. shore. If it forms, it could become Tropical Storm Erin, the fifth named storm of the season. However, the NHC also is monitoring a tropical wave off the western coast of Africa that has a greater chance of development. There's a chance that system could form first, becoming Erin. Then, if the system closer to the U.S. forms, it would be named Fernand. Weather experts have issued repeated warnings this summer that peak Atlantic hurricane season doesn't typically hit until September, urging people to take precautionary action, such as stocking up on emergency supplies and ensuring they have proper insurance in place, before a storm forms. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting from 13 to 19 named storms for this year's Atlantic hurricane season, with six to 10 strengthening into hurricanes and three to five into major hurricanes. What People Are Saying NHC forecast regarding the system near the Southeastern U.S.: "A broad area of low pressure is forecast to develop in a couple of days a few hundred miles off the coast of the southeastern United States. Some gradual development of this system is possible during the middle or latter portion of this week as the system drifts slowly westward to northwestward." This storm poses no threat to the region. Additionally, there are other tropical disturbances that we are monitoring, with no immediate concerns beyond heavy rainfall later this week." One year ago yesterday, Tropical Storm Debby formed on Aug. 3, 2024, and caused widespread and severe flooding across the Eastern United States. Last night, the National Hurricane Center declared Tropical Storm Dexter, and so, it's time for another D-brief. At 11 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, a low-pressure system of winds over 50 mph was detected 255 miles northwest off the East Coast. As of 11 a.m. today, the National Hurricane Center said the storm is moving 'northeast away from the U.S. East Coast with little change in strength'—and is now more than 450 miles away from nearest landfall in North Carolina. 'This general motion is forecast to continue for the next couple of days.' As for the projected strength of the storm, Miami NWS Hurricane Center's models are split on whether an atmospheric disturbance moving south from Canada will cause the storm to accelerate northeastward or leave Dexter behind as weaker post-tropical cyclone, according to the 11 a.m. report. 'Intensity-wise, Dexter is likely to face an increasingly hostile environment,' said the report. 'Thus, only a little additional strengthening is shown in the forecast for Dexter's final structure remains quite uncertain.' In short, "there are no significant impacts expected to land," wrote NWS Science and Operations Officer Carl Barnes in an email at 11:45 a.m. today. As for what to look for closer to home, 'We'll be watching for a potential low to develop off the Southeast coastline toward the end of the week,' posted WTOC meteorologist Andrew Gordon on Facebook. 'If this develops, we could have increased rain chances along with an increased risk for rip currents.'
