Barber jailed for four years for sharing Islamic State videos

Leader Live24-05-2025
Mohammed Hamad, 30, pleaded guilty on Tuesday, the first day of his trial at Liverpool Crown Court, to two counts of disseminating terrorist publications from the so-called Islamic State (IS), also known as Daesh.
At his sentencing hearing on Friday, David Earl, prosecuting, said Hamad had come to the UK illegally from Iraqi Kurdistan in 2016.
He told authorities his life would be in danger and he would be arrested if he returned to his home country, the court heard.
Hamad said he had been a student of preacher Mulla Shwan, who he said used to teach him the Koran but had recently 'joined Daesh'.
He told interviewers: 'Because I was his student, police called me to attend a meeting so I've run away for my life.'
The court heard in June 2022, a WhatsApp group was set up, including Hamad, with the introductory message: 'Swearing by the almighty Allah, we have given a pledge of allegiance to almighty Allah that we will come to you under the flag of the Islamic State caliphate in whatever hole you are in this world.
'Otherwise we will, by Allah, separate your head from your body.'
Hamad shared a 'pro-Islamic State mindset' with others in the group, the court heard.
One video shared by another user showed a shackled soldier on fire with the caption: 'It contains roasting. It is very tasty.'
The court heard Hamad sent two videos in the group.
Mr Earl said the first, sent on December 9 2022, showed someone who claimed to be a student of Mulla Shwan, who appeared in numerous IS videos before he was killed, alongside other IS fighters, in 2015.
The video referred soldiers of the so-called Islamic State and to 'brothers' being skilled in 'IED', meaning improvised explosive devices, Mr Earl said.
A second video was sent by Hamad on January 18 and showed three prisoners being beheaded in the street.
In a speech before the beheading, the man in the video said he was acting in revenge for an attack on Muslim people and promised: 'We will slaughter you one by one.'
Mr Earl said: 'The videos were sent intending them to be a direct or indirect encouragement or other inducement to the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.'
When Hamad, who had a Kurdish Sorani interpreter in the dock, was arrested at his home in Wavertree, Liverpool, in March last year, he told officers: 'I lost my phone a long time ago. I want a solicitor.'
Kate O'Raghallaigh, defending, said: 'The court has seen evidence which is entirely consistent with this man being, in his real life, consistently a hard-working local barber in Liverpool who is not religious, not devout, leads a typical western lifestyle, attends nightclubs and so forth.'
Judge Neil Flewitt KC asked: 'Doesn't it rather beg the question, which is the real life?'
Photographs of Hamad at social events, including his own wedding, were submitted to the court along with a letter from his wife, who sat in the public gallery.
Sentencing, Judge Flewitt said: 'It is said that you live a characteristic western lifestyle, with many gay and lesbian friends, respecting everyone equally.
'On that basis, it is submitted that these offences represent an aberration in your life and undermine any suggestion that you are a committed ideologue.
'I have some difficulty with that submission because another interpretation of that material is that it demonstrates the hypocrisy of a person who is willing publicly to embrace a western lifestyle while privately supporting a terrorist organisation whose objective is to destroy it.'
The judge also made Hamad subject to notification provisions of the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008 for 10 years.

Congregation flees after arsonist sets fire to an Australian synagogue door

An arsonist set fire to the door of a Melbourne synagogue and forced the congregation to flee on Friday, seven months after criminals destroyed a synagogue in the same Australian city with an accelerant-fueled blaze that left a worshipper injured. A man doused the double front doors of the downtown East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation and set it alight around 8 p.m., a police statement said on Saturday. Around 20 worshippers sharing a meal to mark the Shabbat Jewish day of rest evacuated through a rear door and no one was injured, police said. Fire fighters extinguished the blaze which was contained to the front entrance, police. A wave of antisemitic attacks has roiled Australia since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas assault on Israel triggered the war in Gaza. Jewish and Muslim organizations and hate researchers have recorded drastic spikes in hate-fueled incidents on both groups. The Australian government last year appointed special envoys to combat antisemitism and Islamophobia in the community. Last December, two masked men struck the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne's southeast. They caused extensive damage by spreading a liquid accelerant with brooms throughout the building before igniting it. A worshipper sustained minor burns. No charges have been laid for that attack, which Prime Minister Anthony Albanese blamed on antisemitism. The Victorian Joint Counter-Terrorism Team, which includes Victoria state police, federal police and Australia's main domestic spy agency, said the fire was likely a politically-motivated attack. Police say synagogue attack is a serious crime Acting Victoria Police Commander Zorka Dunstan described the latest synagogue fire as a serious crime. Police released a CCTV image of a suspect. 'I'd like to make it very clear that we do recognize that these crimes are disgusting and abhorrent. But at this stage, we are not declaring this a terrorist incident,' Dunstan told reporters. 'In the course of our investigation, we will examine the intent and the ideology of the persons involved, or person, to determine if this is in fact terrorism. At the moment, we are categorizing it as a serious criminal incident and responding accordingly,' she added. A terrorism declaration opens the investigation to more resourcing and can result in charges that carry longer prison sentences. The synagogue's president, Danny Segal, called for the wider Australian community to stand with his congregation. 'We're here to be in peace, you know, we're here for everybody to live together and we've got a fresh start in Australia, such a beautiful country, and what they're doing is just not fair and not right, and as Australians, we should stand up and everybody should stand up,' Segal told reporters. Protesters harass diners in Israeli-owned restaurant Also in downtown Melbourne on Friday night, around 20 masked protesters harassed diners in an Israeli-owned restaurant. A Miznon restaurant window was broken. A 28-year-old woman was arrested for hindering police. Anti-Defamation Commission chair Dvir Abramovich, a leading opponent of antisemitism in Australia, said diners were terrorized as the group chanted ' Death to the IDF,' referring to the Israel Defense Forces. 'Melbourne, for one night, stopped being a safe place for Jews,' Abramovich said. Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece condemned both the synagogue and restaurant incidents. 'These criminal acts against a Melbourne synagogue and an Israeli business are absolutely shocking,' Reece said. 'All of us as a community need to stand up against it.' Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan said both incidents were designed to 'traumatize Jewish families.'

Co-op ATM heist caught on camera as thugs use crowbars and saws to rip out cash machine

The gang used hammers and electric saws to steal the cash from a Co-op store in Scone, Perth. Footage has captured the moment a sophisticated ATM theft gang ripped a cash machine from inside a Scots Co-Op. CCTV clips from the store reveal the actions of the group, who made away with the ATM in the boot of a car on Perth Road in Scone. ‌ Officers were called to the shop after the alarm was raised at around 3.15am on Sunday June 29. Shortly before the raid, three men wearing red gloves are seen outside using crowbars to batter in the glass front of the shop. ‌ After smashing it in, the thugs then use a strapped harness attached to a pick up truck to destroy the shop door and topple the ATM. Debris from the impact is strewn across the shop floor before one man runs inside with an electric saw and hacks off a huge metal chain attaching the cash machine to the ground. A commentary accompanies the video clip where a man describes the robbery step by step. He is heard saying: "He's got a grinder out. Grinds the big chain on the cash machine, because that's where the money is." The men then attach the harness from the truck to the machine before using using the vehicle to haul the machine out of the shop and onto the street. ‌ The man continues: "They hooked it up and hoofed it right out. It's got all the money in it. They've got it. The gang then abandon the pick up truck and a small white car arrives on the scene. The men crack open the outer case of the ATM and bundle a smaller box from inside the machine into the boot before the driver speeds off. ‌ Cops cordoned off the scene after responding to reports of a break-in and theft of cash from an ATM. Locals living nearby told how they woke up at around 3am to hear the robbery taking place. One man, who lives across the road from the shop, said: "A pick-up hauled the cash machine out the wall of the Co-op. "I heard something at about 3am and thought it was bins getting blown over, but there was a big vehicle stopped for a bit. I never heard any alarm going off and I live right across the street from the Co-op." ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! That place is always getting robbed but this is first time the cash machine has been hauled out." The quantity of cash stolen during the incident is not yet known. ‌ The attack on Scone's Co-Op came just 24 hours after another branch of the store was targeted in Lenzie at 2.15am last Saturday morning. Pictures taken from the scene on Kirkintilloch Road showed glass scattered across the floor after the machine was ripped out of the shop. The 'free cash withdrawals' sign could be seen amongst various other debris, with a police car positioned nearby. ‌ It is understood that police are probing whether the incidents are linked. No one has yet been arrested and officers are appealing for information. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Around 2.15am on Saturday, June 28, 2025, we received a report of a break-in and theft of cash from an ATM at a premises on Kirkintilloch Road, Lenzie. ‌ "Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 0464 of June 28, 2025.
