Demographic alarm in Karnataka, deaths outpace births in seven districts!
Bengaluru: A demographic shift with far-reaching implications is unfolding in Karnataka, where seven districts—Udupi, Hassan, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Ramanagara, Bengaluru Rural, and Chitradurga—have reported a higher number of deaths than births, according to the Civil Registration System (CRS) data released by the Centre for 2021.
This reversal of the natural demographic trend, where birth rates typically outstrip death rates, marks a critical turning point for the state. In 2019, only three districts—Chamarajanagar, Mandya, and Ramanagara—had reported such a trend. The widening of this phenomenon to four additional districts reflects what experts call a silent but worrying demographic transition.
Meanwhile, Dakshina Kannada (DK), along with 10 other districts, viz. Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Davanagere, Chikkamagaluru, Tumakuru, Mysuru, and Bengaluru Urban, is now showing signs of stagnation. Although births still marginally exceed deaths in these districts, the growth margin is narrowing swiftly, pushing them towards a potential demographic tipping point. The trend stands in stark contrast to regions like Kalaburagi, Bidar, Yadgir, Raichur, and Koppal—part of the Kalyana Karnataka region—where higher birth rates continue to sustain population growth. However, even here, districts like Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Shivamogga, Ballari, Bagalkote, and Vijayapura are approaching similar stress zones in terms of birth-death ratios.
The 2021 CRS report underscores that Karnataka is not alone. Across the country, 49 districts have recorded this inversion, with an overwhelming 34 located in south India. Karnataka contributes seven such districts to the list, while neighbouring Tamil Nadu accounts for 17. Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Puducherry make up the rest.
'This trend reflects both the success of socio-economic development and the challenges of a rapidly ageing population,' said a Bengaluru-based demographer. 'However, the implications are serious, ranging from labour shortages to shifts in policy priorities and fiscal allocations,' the report stated.

Centre okays ₹3,667 cr plan for road, infra development in Himachal Pradesh
The Union government has approved the annual plan of Rs 3,667 crore for the construction and up-gradation of roads, bridges and related infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh for the financial year 2024'25, said Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh on Monday. The plan includes construction of bridges, road widening, installation of crash barriers and other works on national highways across various districts of the state, he said in a statement issued here. The minister said that he recently met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and discussed important issues related to the state, appraising him that presently the state has around 1,200 kilometres of roads under the national highway network and requested to enhance central assistance for their maintenance and improvement of road and other related works. He said that while the state had submitted an annual plan of Rs 2,600 crore for the financial year 2023'24, but received only Rs 269 crore, which was insufficient. However, for the financial year 2024'25, the state government proposed a plan worth Rs 3,667 crore, which has now been approved by the Centre in June. Vikramaditya Singh informed that he had also raised the issue of constructing a tunnel beneath Jalori Jot in Kullu district and the Central Government has given in-principle approval and sanctioned Rs 1,452 crore for this tunnel. The 4.2 km long Jalori Jot tunnel under the Jalori pass in Kullu district would provide all-year connectivity to Banjat and Anni areas. He said that the construction of this tunnel would not only boost tourism in the area but also benefit lakhs of residents in the region. He said that due to repeated landslides near Brauni Nala in Shimla district on National Highway-5 (Hindustan-Tibet Road), the stretch has suffered serious damage and to address this, the Centre has approved Rs 135 crore for the construction of a bridge at this location. Apart from this, the Central government has sanctioned Rs 1,385 crore for the four-laning of the Kala Amb Paonta Sahib on Dehradun road. It includes land acquisition and pre-construction activities. The PWD minister expressed his gratitude to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the Central government for approving significant funds for the state. He said he was hoping that strong coordination between the Centre and the State would continue in the future. Singh said that during his Delhi visit, he also met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and raised the issue of the proposed Bhubu Jot tunnel and road connecting Mandi and Kullu districts and requested that the road leading to the tunnel be declared a strategically important defence route. He said that the state was hopeful of a positive outcome on this vital road project in the near future. Once completed, the road would reduce the distance between Pathankot and Kullu by 40 to 50 kilometres which would boost tourism and also benefit local residents as well as the Indian Army.

Iran raises death toll from war with Israel to more than 900
Iran raised the official death toll for its war with Israel on Monday, with official media reporting 935 people were killed in the country during the 12-day conflict. The state-run IRNA news agency did not give a breakdown between military and civilian casualties, but said of the 935 people, 38 were children and 132 were women. Its previous report last week said 627 people had been killed. The US-based Human Rights Activists over the weekend said 1,190 people had been killed according to data collected by the agency's network of medical and local volunteers. Of those, it said 436 were civilians, 435 military and 319 have not yet been identified. The group has consistently reported higher casualties than the official reports from relentlessly attacked Iran beginning June 13, targeting its nuclear sites, defense systems, high-ranking military officials and atomic scientists. In retaliation, Iran fired more than 550 ballistic missiles at Israel, most of which were intercepted, but those that got through caused damage in many areas and killed 28 people.

China says Canada's order for Hikvision closure 'damages' trade ties
Beijing: Beijing said Monday that Canada's request for Chinese surveillance equipment firm Hikvision to close local operations would "damage" bilateral trade, complicating recent efforts to improve ties between the countries. Canada's industry minister, Melanie Joly , announced the move on Friday, writing on X that Hikvision Canada Inc. had been ordered to cease all operations due to concerns their continuation would be "injurious" to the country's security. The statement did not provide details on the alleged threat posed by Hikvision products, which Canadian government departments will now be banned from purchasing or using. Beijing's commerce ministry responded by accusing Ottawa of "over-generalising national security", stating: "China is strongly dissatisfied". "This not only undermines the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies and affects the confidence of companies from both countries in cooperation, but also disrupts and damages the normal economic and trade cooperation between China and Canada," a statement read. "China urges Canada to immediately correct its wrong practices," it added. Hangzhou-based Hikvision is one of the world's leading manufacturers of security cameras and other surveillance products, but it has faced scrutiny abroad for its role in Beijing's alleged rights abuses against the Muslim minority population in the Xinjiang region. The United States included Hikvision in a 2019 blacklist of Chinese entities it said were implicated in such violations. The latest disagreement represents an early test for China-Canada relations after Prime Minister Mark Carney surged to electoral victory in April. China said in response to the election result that Beijing was willing to improve ties with Ottawa -- a relationship rocked in recent years by a range of thorny issues. The arrest of a senior Chinese telecom executive on a US warrant in Vancouver in December 2018 and Beijing's retaliatory detention of two Canadians on espionage charges plunged relations into a deep freeze. Ties were further strained over allegations of Chinese interference in Canadian elections in 2019 and 2021, charges Beijing has denied. Joly's statement Friday said that the decision to ban Hikvision had been reached following a "multi-step review" of information provided by the Canadian security and intelligence community. Her statement added that the Canadian government "is further conducting a review of existing properties to ensure that legacy Hikvision products are not used going forward".
