Ashura Drive Goes Green

TDT | Manama A sustainability-focused campaign held during this year's Ashura season saw Capital Municipality mobilise public and private actors to ensure clean, safe, and orderly commemorations across the capital. Launched under the slogan 'Sustainable through your efforts', the campaign brought together the Capital Municipality, Gulf City Cleaning Company, municipal council members, and leaders of matams and mourning centres. The efforts focused on preserving environmental standards and elevating public services in line with the season's spiritual significance. Field visits completed Director General Eng. Mohammed Saad Al-Sahli led inspection visits to several mourning centres and procession locations in the Capital Governorate. He was joined by MP Ahmed Sabah Salman Al-Salloum, Municipal Council Chairman Eng. Saleh Tarada, and other senior officials. The teams reviewed cleanliness measures, site readiness, and coordination mechanisms in place to ensure smooth operations during the religious events. They also met organisers and supervisors to assess local needs and reinforce safety standards. Al-Sahli emphasised that sustainability is not limited to environmental protection, but also encompasses civic values and public responsibility. Awareness and action The municipality had earlier conducted coordination meetings with representatives of mourning centres and civic partners to launch the campaign. Awareness drives encouraged residents to participate in waste sorting, reduce plastic use, and maintain the cleanliness of religious sites. 'This year, the campaign elevated sustainability beyond just waste management. It became a message about conscious citizenship,' Al-Sahli said. Council Chairman Eng. Saleh Tarada highlighted the strength of community partnerships as a pillar of municipal work, calling the cooperation between the municipality and funeral organisers a model for future initiatives. The Capital Municipality credited the success of this year's Ashura observance to the collective efforts of residents, volunteers, and partner agencies.

Southern Municipality Launches Recycling Bin Distribution Campaign in Riffa

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability and cleanliness, the Southern Municipality has officially launched its first recycling bin distribution campaign. The initiative began at Al-Hikma Society for Retirees and the Al-Manar Home for Parental Care and will expand to include various public and private schools as well as other community institutions. This campaign is part of a broader plan to distribute over 300 sorting and recycling bins across the Southern Governorate in 2025. Each bin comes in one of three distinct colors to help make waste sorting easier at the source: Blue for plastic waste Green for paper waste Light Blue for metal waste The aim is to encourage residents and institutions to play a more active role in protecting the environment, while also raising awareness about the importance of community partnership in waste reduction. The initiative is aligned with Public Cleanliness Law No. 10 of 2019. After collection, the sorted waste is handed over to the cleaning company Urbaser, which can be contacted through their hotline: 80070000 for proper recycling according to national standards. The campaign also includes awareness workshops on how to correctly sort waste at home and use the color-coded bins. By doing so, the municipality hopes to increase recycling rates and reduce harmful emissions, supporting Bahrain's national goals for sustainable development and the preservation of natural resources. This initiative highlights the crucial role that individuals and civil society organizations play in making environmental programs successful and sustainable.
