Explained: What Is Flag Football & Why It Will Make Primetime Olympic Debut At LA28

Flag football will debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, featuring primetime medal games.
Flag football is all set to take center stage during the 2018 Los Angeles Olympics, after organisers confirmed on Monday that the sport's medal games will be held in primetime slots in its first-ever Olympic appearance. LA 2028 will feature the debut of flag football and squash as optional sports, joined by the return of baseball, cricket and lacrosse.
The International Federation of American Football, in partnership with the National Football League, has announced that the men's and women's medal matches are scheduled for Friday evening, July 21 and Saturday afternoon, July 22, at the BMO Stadium near downtown Los Angeles.
The LA 2028 Olympics are scheduled to begin on July 14 and will come to a close on Sunday, July 30.
What is Flag Football?
It is a variant of American or Canadian football where, instead of tackling the players to the ground, the defensive side must remove a flag or flag belt from the ball carrier to end a down.
In flag football, contact is limited between the players. The sport has a strong amateur following with multiple national and international tournaments every year sponsored by various associations, but is most played in the USA, where it was invented in the 1940s.
The first known recorded history of the sport can be traced to Fort Meade, a census-designated place in Anne Arundel County in Maryland, which is now accepted as flag football's birthplace.
The first national organisation for the sport, the National Touch Football League, was formed in the 1960s in St. Louis, a major city in Missouri along the Mississippi River.
How has flag football gained primetime access in the LA2028 roster?
The announcement comes as senior IFAF and NFL delegations visit Los Angeles for the first official meetings with the Games organisers, marking three years to the day before the LA28 Opening Ceremony.
The inclusion of flag football in LA28 follows a vote by NFL owners permitting NFL players to take part in the Olympic competition, which ensures that a large amount of fan following will focus on the sport.
IFAF President Pierre Trochet said that the primetime scheduling was a clear statement of a shared ambition to ensure the sport contributes a 'defining element" of LA28's success.
The IFAF delegation will meet with key LA28 organising committee members and attend the launch of a new NFL flag football brand campaign, which features Olympic gymnastics champion Jordan Chiles and flag football athletes from Australia and the USA.

Rishabh Pant Ruled Out Of India-England Test Series, Confirms Head Coach Gambhir

Last Updated: Rishabh Pant has been officially ruled out of the India-England Test series, head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed after the Manchester Test. Head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed on Sunday (July 27) that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the remainder of the India-England Test series. Pant suffered a metatarsal fracture after being hit on the foot by a Chris Woakes yorker while batting on the first day of the fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test. He was taken to the hospital and was reportedly advised six weeks of rest, though he came out to bat on the second day and scored 16 runs too. The Test ended in a draw, thanks to valiant centuries from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, who helped India overcome the 311-run first innings lead, forcing the hosts to accept a draw an hour before Stumps on Day 5. 'Rishabh is already out of the series," Gambhir said in the post-match press conference. 'I want to say that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on something that Rishabh Pant did for the team and for the country as well. Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially batting with a broken foot. Not many people have done that in the past, and he put his hand up, and that is why I say any amount of praise, I can sit here and talk about this for hours and hours. I think the generations to come forward will talk about this, and the generations coming forward should talk about it," he added. First Time In 91 Years! 4 Indian Batters Have Scored More Than...

Last Updated: Four batters—KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja—have scored more than 400 runs for India in the ongoing series against England. Ravindra Jadeja scored 107 runs from 185 balls for India in the second innings of the fourth Test against England. In the match that ended in a draw on Sunday (July 27), Jadeja came out to bat at No. 6 and hammered 13 fours and 1 six during his stay at the crease. He added an unbeaten 203 runs for the fifth wicket with Washington Sundar (101*) to help India avoid defeat at Old Trafford despite conceding a lead of 311 runs in the first innings. During his 107-run knock, when Jadeja reached the 53-run mark, he completed 400 runs in the ongoing series. Team India played its first-ever Test match in June 1932 against England at The Lord's but their first-ever Test series was played in 1933-34 at home against the English team. In that series (3-match assignment), Lala Amarnath finished as the top run getter for India. In six innings of three matches, he amassed a total of 203 runs. Gill is India's leading run getter in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. With the help of one double century and three half-centuries, he has amassed a total of 722 runs so far. Rahul has 511 runs to his name, whereas Pant has scored 479 runs in seven innings. Pant will, however, not take part in the fifth Test due to a foot injury that he suffered on Day 1 of the Manchester Test. Had Pant played in the fifth and final Test at The Oval from July 31 to August 4, he would have gotten a chance to break the record of scoring the most runs by a wicketkeeper-batter in a Test series for India. As of now the record is in the name of Budhi Kunderan. Kunderan amassed a total of 525 runs for India in the home series against England in 1965. Gill will, however, have a chance to break the record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India at The Oval. As of now, the record is in the name of Sunil Gavaskar, who amassed a total of 774 runs in four matches for the Ajit Wadekar-led side against the West Indies in 1971. Gill needs to score 53 more runs to go past that tally. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 00:08 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Shocking! Ben Stokes Rejects Handshakes With Jadeja & Sundar, Video Goes Viral

Ben Stokes ignored Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar during post-match handshakes, a new viral video shows. The controversy about Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar ignoring Ben Stokes' offer of an early draw in Manchester during the fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test had not even reached beyond social media, that we might see another, this time with the roles reversed. A video from just after the match is now going viral, where Stokes is seen deliberately ignoring Jadeja and Sundar in the teams' customary handshakes. Other English players are seen happily shaking their hands, but Stokes only does it with his teammates. It didn't seem to sit well with Jadeja, who is seen confronting him about it, but Stokes then walks off after arguing a bit. Watch a video of it here: — Paresh Patil Madarchod (@_huzaiff) July 27, 2025 There is an unsaid provision in the sport that allows both captains to shake hands and agree to a draw if they feel that the possibility of a result is improbable. Jadeja and Washington had worked hard to lift India from a near-losing position to a comfortably drawing one and were batting on 89 and 80 respectively. Stokes offered the handshake individually and then approached the umpire, but both were ignored. The skipper was irked and brought in part-timer Harry Brook to bowl, who didn't shy away from hurling abuses at Sundar while trying long-hops against both. After opting to continue, both reached their centuries and only then decided to accept the offer of a draw. Speaking after the match — only the second draw in his captaincy career — Stokes said he opted to bowl Brook to not 'risk' his pacers, while also giving Jadeja and Sundar their due credit. 'We took the game as far as we could. As soon as draw looked inevitable, I wasn't going to risk my bowlers with the short turnaround… You got to give a heap load of credit for the way that Washington and Jadeja came in and played there and they were obviously under a lot of pressure. So to put that partnership together like they did there, I've got to give them a lot of credit," he said. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 00:05 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
