US Olympic and Paralympic Committee bans transgender athletes in compliance with Trump order
The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee is falling in line with an executive order from President Donald Trump banning transgender women from women's sports. The committee quietly updated its eligibility rules Monday, adding a paragraph to its 27-page 'Athlete Safety Policy' posted to its website that includes language that implies it bars transgender women from competing in women's divisions. Trump signed the 'Keeping Men out of Women's Sports' executive order — also known as Executive Order 14201 — in February. Getty Images 'The USOPC will continue to collaborate with various stakeholders with oversight responsibilities, e.g., IOC, IPC, NGBs, to ensure that women have a fair and safe competition environment consistent with Executive Order 14201 and the Ted Stevens Olympic & Amateur Sports Act,' the added language in the document stated. It's not clearly stated how the policy will be enforced, and it is unclear whether any American Olympians will be banned from the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics taking place in Los Angeles. Advertisement A USOPC spokesperson told the New York Times that the committee had been having 'a series of respectful and constructive conversations with federal officials' following the president's executive order. The committee said it would work with national governing bodies to implement the new policy. 'As a federally chartered organization, we have an obligation to comply with federal expectations,' the USOPC statement read. The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee's former policy based its rulings on 'real data and science-based evidence rather than ideology,' and that it would be 'making science-based decisions, sport by sport and discipline by discipline, within both the Olympic and Paralympic movements.' The International Olympic Committee has struggled to address the issue of transgender athletes in sports. USA Fencing updated its policy last week in response to criticism that it had been facing for allowing biological males to compete in the women's category. Part of the requirements to compete in a domestic women's competition include the language, 'Athletes who are of the female sex, provided all other entry criteria have been met.'

Explained: What Is Flag Football & Why It Will Make Primetime Olympic Debut At LA28
Last Updated: Flag football will debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, featuring primetime medal games. Flag football is all set to take center stage during the 2018 Los Angeles Olympics, after organisers confirmed on Monday that the sport's medal games will be held in primetime slots in its first-ever Olympic appearance. LA 2028 will feature the debut of flag football and squash as optional sports, joined by the return of baseball, cricket and lacrosse. The International Federation of American Football, in partnership with the National Football League, has announced that the men's and women's medal matches are scheduled for Friday evening, July 21 and Saturday afternoon, July 22, at the BMO Stadium near downtown Los Angeles. The LA 2028 Olympics are scheduled to begin on July 14 and will come to a close on Sunday, July 30. What is Flag Football? It is a variant of American or Canadian football where, instead of tackling the players to the ground, the defensive side must remove a flag or flag belt from the ball carrier to end a down. In flag football, contact is limited between the players. The sport has a strong amateur following with multiple national and international tournaments every year sponsored by various associations, but is most played in the USA, where it was invented in the 1940s. The first known recorded history of the sport can be traced to Fort Meade, a census-designated place in Anne Arundel County in Maryland, which is now accepted as flag football's birthplace. The first national organisation for the sport, the National Touch Football League, was formed in the 1960s in St. Louis, a major city in Missouri along the Mississippi River. How has flag football gained primetime access in the LA2028 roster? The announcement comes as senior IFAF and NFL delegations visit Los Angeles for the first official meetings with the Games organisers, marking three years to the day before the LA28 Opening Ceremony. The inclusion of flag football in LA28 follows a vote by NFL owners permitting NFL players to take part in the Olympic competition, which ensures that a large amount of fan following will focus on the sport. IFAF President Pierre Trochet said that the primetime scheduling was a clear statement of a shared ambition to ensure the sport contributes a 'defining element" of LA28's success. The IFAF delegation will meet with key LA28 organising committee members and attend the launch of a new NFL flag football brand campaign, which features Olympic gymnastics champion Jordan Chiles and flag football athletes from Australia and the USA. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Three years and counting: LA28 schedule unveiled
Organisers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics have released the first look at the competition schedule, highlighting a historic reshuffling of key events and the most ambitious sports line-up in Games history. Monday's announcement comes as the city marks three years to go until the opening ceremony and celebrates a major legacy milestone: more than one million enrolments in the PlayLA youth sports programme. For the first time in 32 years, the Summer Olympics will return to the United States, with Los Angeles hosting for the third time after 1932 and 1984. The 2028 Games are set to feature 844 ticketed events designed to maximise both domestic and international viewership. Organisers revealed that the opening ceremony will take place on July 14, split between the LA Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, with the closing ceremony scheduled for July 30 at the Coliseum. 3 years until the Olympic Games light up LA! 🇺🇸✨Mark your calendars… all of them! ✅🗓️#Olympics | @LA28 — The Olympic Games (@Olympics) July 14, 2025 In a notable departure from tradition, the LA28 schedule swaps the usual order of athletics and swimming competitions. Track and field events will open the Games in the first week, with swimming moving to the second week, culminating in its finale on the penultimate day at SoFi Stadium. The first Olympic champion of LA28 will be crowned at Venice Beach in the triathlon event, while the marathon will close out athletics on the final weekend. Day 15 is expected to be the busiest for medal events, with 16 team finals and 19 individual finals taking place. "The Olympic competition schedule has been meticulously developed to ensure the world's best athletes can compete in LA," LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover said in a statement. "We are energised by today's milestones and remain focused on the work ahead as the road to 2028 continues." LA Mayor Karen Bass added: "When the world comes here for these Games, we will highlight every neighbourhood as we host a Games for all and work to ensure it leaves a monumental legacy." Meanwhile, Hoover joined city officials at an event at the Coliseum to celebrate PlayLA surpassing one million programme enrolments. The initiative, backed by up to $US160 million ($A244 million) in investment from LA28, the city's Recreation and Parks Department, and the IOC, provides affordable and inclusive sports programming for children aged 3-17 across more than 40 Olympic and adaptive sports.
