Sustainability meets law: Sarawak pushes ESG leadership in Southeast Asia
Dr Hazland delivers his speech at the forum. KUCHING (July 4): Sarawak is steadily positioning itself as a regional thought leader in legal and policy frameworks amid Southeast Asia's intensifying focus on climate change, energy transition and environmental, social and governance (ESG) compliance. State Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said Sarawak is not only responding to global sustainability trends but also contributing to the definition of responsible development in the region. 'We do not see sustainability and economic growth as opposing forces. In Sarawak, they are two sides of the same coin — and we are building the policy ecosystem to prove it,' he said. Dr Hazland made these remarks at the Arbitrating Sustainability in Southeast Asia forum organised by the Malaysian Bar Council, held in conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur Alternative Dispute Resolution (KL ADR) Week 2025. The event brought together senior government officials and legal experts from across Asean to explore how arbitration and dispute resolution can support sustainable development. A high-level regional panel featured representatives from the Solicitor General's Office of the Philippines, as well as leading arbitration practitioners from Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia — reflecting the cross-border urgency of ESG governance. Dr Hazland emphasised that robust legal and regulatory infrastructure is critical in attracting green investment and promoting good governance. 'Regulatory certainty is key to attracting green investment. That is why Sarawak supports legal innovation — not just in legislation, but in dispute resolution,' he said. Bar Council Arbitration and Construction Law Committee chair Abang Iwawan, in his opening remarks, highlighted the shifting legal landscape across Southeast Asia. 'Sustainability is no longer a buzzword — it is now a site of legal transformation. Governments are codifying climate responsibilities, investors are embedding ESG safeguards, and infrastructure projects are being shaped by carbon disclosure regimes and Indigenous rights. 'These shifts raise urgent legal questions that cut across contracts, regulatory frameworks, and dispute resolution,' he concluded. Dr Hazland Abang Hipni ESG Southeast Asia sustainability

IEW 2025 to Unlock US$2.5 bln in business, cement Sarawak's clean energy leadership
Dr Hazland (third right) chairing the final steering committee meeting. KUCHING (July 2): The International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 is expected to generate an estimated US$2.5 billion in potential business opportunities and attract fresh investments into Sarawak's fast-growing energy sector. In a statement, the Sarawak Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) said the event will spotlight over 20 curated sessions focused on sustainability and the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. The sessions will also highlight the need for stronger regional collaboration in shaping resilient, future-ready energy systems. IEW 2025 will be held from July 15 to 17 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) under the theme 'From Sarawak to the World: Journey to Clean Energy Leadership', and hosted by MEESty and organised by Informa Markets, in collaboration with Oil & Gas Asia (OGA). According to MEESty, the summit will position Sarawak as a regional hub for clean energy transformation, attracting more than 6,500 participants from 25 countries. Among them will be 400 companies representing 30 nations, along with 500 local and international summit delegates. 'As preparations enter the final phase, confidence is high that IEW 2025 will be a transformative event that positions Sarawak firmly on the world map as a leader in clean energy leadership. 'It promises not only to showcase Sarawak's progress, but also to serve as a launchpad for new ideas, partnerships, and sustainable energy pathways for Asean and beyond,' the ministry said in the statement, following the final steering committee meeting chaired by its Deputy Minister, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, aimed at ensuring smooth execution of the event. During the meeting, Dr Hazland said the summit goes beyond being an exhibition – it is a strategic platform for global energy dialogue, collaboration, and knowledge exchange. The event, to be officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, also underscores Sarawak's continued commitment to renewable energy, decarbonisation, and sustainability. Dr Hazland urged all stakeholders to maintain strong coordination in delivering a world-class summit that reflects Sarawak's ambitions on the international energy stage. IEW 2025 will feature a range of high-impact events, including the main summit forum, which spans two days and gathers international speakers, energy ministers, CEOs, and key decision-makers to discuss critical themes such as hydrogen development, carbon capture, and green infrastructure. Notable speakers include Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Dr Hazland himself, and senior figures from Petros, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), Siemens Energy, Schneider Electric, and other leading organisations. Other highlights include technical talks offering insights into cutting-edge energy innovations, as well as IEW Future Horizon by TalentCorp – an initiative aimed at inspiring students and graduates to pursue careers in the energy sector through expert-led sessions and career talks. The event will also feature a networking golf tournament hosted by the Malaysian Oil, Gas & Energy Services Council, offering informal yet impactful opportunities for industry professionals to connect and collaborate.

Dr Hazland: Sarawak-Australia tie-ups possible in energy, environmental sustainability sectors
Dr Hazland presents a memento to Cahill during the courtesy call. KUCHING (June 26): Sarawak and Australia are seeking potential collaborations in the field of energy and environmental sustainability, said Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni. The Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability said this when receiving a courtesy call from Australia's Northern Territory Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill yesterday. A statement issued by Dr Hazland's office said both leaders noted the similar direction taken by their respective governments in advancing clean energy transition and climate resilience efforts. Cahill expressed Australia's keen interest in collaborating with Sarawak, particularly with technical expertise and knowledge exchange. She highlighted Sarawak's progressive approach as a valuable partner in shaping a sustainable energy future. Dr Hazland welcomed the engagement and shared the state's key initiatives under his ministry including the Sarawak Energy Transition Roadmap (SET-P), Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 (SSB), and the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER). These documents provide a comprehensive framework for Sarawak's shift towards a green economy, focusing on renewable energy, carbon reduction and clean technology development, said the statement. Both parties agreed that the exchange of technical knowledge, joint research, and collaborative programmes could accelerate mutual goals and benefit stakeholders in both regions. The discussion also touched on opportunities for capacity building, industry academia partnerships, and pilot projects in areas such as hydrogen production, carbon capture, and nature-based solutions. The courtesy call concluded with a shared commitment to identify actionable pathways for partnership and to maintain regular engagement through bilateral platforms and technical dialogues. 'This meeting marks another step forward in strengthening Sarawak's global ties in environmental sustainability and reaffirms the state's commitment to international cooperation in addressing climate and energy challenges,' added the statement.
