Brave One's impressive performance at Randwick highlights a promising future for the Team Hawkes gelding
The Team Hawkes -trained three-year-old proved you can travel wide and still win, proved he's not just a wet-tracker, and proved he's a promising young sprinter.
This all took a tick over 67 seconds as Brave One put paid to his rivals with a consummate ease in the Quayclean Handicap (1300m).

Hall of Fame trainer John Hawkes wasn't concerned when jockey Dylan Gibbons was trapped three-wide from an outside barrier.
'It's all about tempo. They didn't go hard and Dylan had the horse in a nice rhythm,'' Hawkes said.
'If they ran long at a fast tempo, then he had a chance to get over but if they go hard and you are trapped out wide then it is more difficult.
'But Dylan rode the horse how I asked him to – just have the horse where he was comfortable.
'Brave One was a class above them, he's better than this grade.''
With Gibbons wearing the racing colours synonymous with the Hawkes stable's former champion sprinter Chautauqua, the emerging Brave One ($4 favourite) raced away to win by one-and-a-half lengths from Secure ($5) with Lunaite ($5) nearly a length away third.
Gibbons, who missed four months over summer with a shoulder injury but has been in brilliant form of late, didn't panic when he could get closer than three-wide on Brave One early.
'You probably couldn't tell but the first half of the race I had actually cover and it wasn't until the 700m that Kerrin (McEvoy, Lunaite) dropped in,'' Gibbons said.

'The pace slackened and it landed us in free ground so I just had to trust his ability late.''
Gibbons admitted it is usually frowned upon in Australian racing to be three-wide but the jockey was also factoring in the race tempo with his riding tactics.
'Sometimes being three-wide is better than being one-one or three-back, one-off in a slow race and over-racing. From those wide alleys you can really only beat yourself,'' he said.
'I have been doing a bit of work for the Hawkes team at home and they are very easy to ride for.
'They've got one instruction and that's to ride the horse and keep the horse happy. It is pretty easy when your only plan is to do exactly that. They make it easy on you.
'There were no instructions from out wide. I trusted the horse and it paid off. I gave him a chance to go and win it and he did just that.
'It obviously helps when you've got a horse with ability but I think that showed today because he was able to cruise across, have cover for the first half and then from there on in it was a matter of point and shoot.'
Brave One, who is by Team Hawkes former Group 1-winning sprinter Exceedance and cost $300,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, improved his record to two wins (and two seconds) from just six starts and took his earnings to nearly $260,000.

Gibbons and Hawkes were in agreement that the best is yet to come from Brave One.
'I think he will keep improving,'' Gibbons said.
'What I really liked today is when I rode him last start he was keen, he still travelled up well and probably got beaten by a handy one (Kerguelen).
'But today, he was beautiful, relaxed right in my hands, and he was tough. There is a lot of ability there and I'll be excited to see where he goes from here.'
Brave One continues what has been an outstanding season for the Hawkes stable who has prepared 60 winners of a career-best $11.1 million prizemoney including Group 1 wins from exciting trio Briasa (TJ Smith Stakes), Nepotism (Champagne Stakes) and Devil Night (Blue Diamond).
Hawkes, who trains in partnership with his sons Michael and Wayne, said Brave One has a 'bright future' but he was not sure how much longer into winter the young sprinter will keep racing.
'We will see how Brave One pulls up,'' Hawkes said. 'We might look to give him one more run, we will just play it by ear.
'But he's not just a wet-tracker as he showed today. He's a nice horse and will be even better next time around.''

Champion pacer Leap To Fame could be more vulnerable in his first round Brisbane Inter Dominion heat tomorrow night (Saturday) than the $1 million final two weeks later. Trainer-driver Grant Dixon concedes the worst possible barrier draw (gate eight, inside the back row) makes his champion pacer Leap To Fame genuinely vulnerable in the opening round of heats. 'The fact is, from a draw like that, you're always going to need luck,' he said. 'I'd love that draw with every other horse we've got in the series, just not Leap To Fame. 'It's uncanny how often he's drawn there or one – the two draws which don't suit him – and it's a challenge every time.' In contrast to many other times when Dixon has pushed through and found his way off the inside and away from being pocketed, he hinted at taking less risk this time. 'I think I've just got to take my medicine and back out at the start. It could get really tight on the inside,' he said. Leap To Fame is unbeaten at the Inter Dominion. He went through 2023 Brisbane series – three heats and final – unbeaten and is $2.50 to take a clean sweep again this year. But those snapping-up the odds could have a harder ride than expected in round one, despite Leap To Fame being $1.12 favourite. 'Whether it's pushing through and driving him for a bit of luck, or backing out at the start and giving the leaders a huge head start, the draw has given us an early challenge,' Dixon said. Codetta was a beaten favourite last start but she lost no admirers in defeat. I've been on her both starts and have to stay with her, Shayno, particularly now she is up to 1300m. GATEKEEPER (7) is a very interesting runner. He's superbly-bred, won nicely on debut, and resumes off two easy trials, the most recent when he was desperate to go faster. DIDDLE DUMPLING (4) and GOLDEN STRAAND (8) both come off big wins at Gosford. O'Cass: How about DIDDLE DUMPLING (4) 's form, RT. She had four runs as a two-year-old including back-to-back fifths in Manaal's Sweet Embrace and in the Percy Sykes (Lady of Camelot was second). Then she opened her three-year-old season with a second to Aeliana! Not surprisingly, Diddle Dumpling bolted in at Wyong first-up and she is well up to Saturday city grade. O'Cass: I'm also with TARPAULIN (5). There was a bit of a boom on him this time last year when he won those two midweeks late in his two-year-old season. His best run since then, and so far, was his fourth in the Danehill Stakes last spring. He has been off the scene a fair while but his trials indicate a happy and healthy horse ready to race. He loves the wet too. But he'll have to be right up to the mark to beat a very fit and in-form STORM THE RAMPARTS (1). That said, he is right up in the weights. I think she is ready to maintain that record after two solid efforts this campaign including her closing third at Randwick last start. I don't mind her barrier because if she can slide across and find cover then she is going to be hard to hold out. DOLLAR MAGIC (14), racing's professional placegetter, will be in the mix again and KING OF ROSEAU (11) really attacked the line to score here last start but he has to come back slightly in trip. WORLD ALLIANCE (8) will be charging home and Bunker Hut always races well fresh. O'Cass: I didn't realise that statistic about COSMONOVA (13) and concede she has a great chance. In saying that, I want to be with FLEETWOOD (4). He is something of a rarity at Godolphin given he was bought not bred. They must have liked him because $160,000 is not an insignificant sum for an Encryption yearling. He has turned out to be another canny buy for the Royal Blue, having won five races and more than $330,000 in a relatively short time. Best of all, he is unbeaten in both starts on Heavy. BUNKER HUT (3) has an inviting and enticing set of numbers right across the board except maybe that he hasn't won on heavy and all his best form is on good tracks. The winner is in rare form and Welwal ran a blinder to get within a half-length. He will be fitter and handles soft tracks. In a race of many chances THUNDERLIPS (10) is in career-best form and on the seven-day back-up after his fast-finishing win at Rosehill over 1500m. WHINCHAT (8) has again drawn wide but if he breaks cleanly and races on speed, he will take running down. ACCREDITED (4) bounced back to winning form on the drying track last start. His chances soar if the track is closer to good than heavy. O'Cass: RUBY FLYER (14) is the sort of horse who could make his presence felt in The Big Dance if he got there and it was pouring cats and dogs on the day. My point there is that he is one of the best muddies racing all day on Saturday, he is a Randwick Mile winner and was placed in a Rowley Mile. This is 1400m of course but no less suitable for the Brad Widdup-trained gelding. WELWAL (2) was given the perfect ride by Tommy Berry when ripping into the margin behind Headley Grange last start. He is getting oh so close. ASTERO (11) is always underrated. He looked to have every chance but still stuck to his task and was beaten just over a length. Kerguelen is back in his right grade and is drawn to get the run of the race. SACRED ROCKS (12) produced an amazing effort to win over 1300m here three weeks ago. She has drawn off the track but she will go back early and charge home. BRAVE ONE (10) drew wide and covered extra ground but was still too classy at Randwick. The barrier is the concern again. LITTLE COINTREAU (8) doesn't run a bad race. I know what you like in the last, Shayno and if it wins, to use one of your phrases, you will be a hero to a nation. O'Cass: I'm with VALIMI (14), RT! This is the French import with Kris Lees whose form back home includes three stakes race appearances, most notably the 2023 French 2000 Guineas where he ran fifth. What about his Australian runs? They weren't great, that is true, but it would seem to be that he can only go on soft and/or heavy tracks. His trials were just fantastic too. At $71, I think Valimi is over the odds and will run a big race. Joe Pride-trained horses seem to hold to their form like no other trainer and for that reason alone, LITTLE COINTREAU (8) has to go in somewhere.

Suns coach Damien Hardwick explodes at AFL's umpire contact change
Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick has taken aim at the AFL in the wake of a league-wide change to umpire contact. Hardwick delivered a fiery and passionate rant in the direction of the league's head office as he called out a double standard in the change. 'If it leads to a suspension, look out from our point of view,' the three-time premiership coach said. 'I know we're the Gold Coast Suns, and don't get me wrong, Matt Rowell is a superstar, but if this was spoken about with Nick Daicos, Collingwood would tear the place down. 'Let's sit there and understand what we're talking about here. 'We can make a change about umpire adjudication, but we've been calling out for change to the tribunal for a period of time. Why can we, with the swipe of a pen, change one but not the other? 'End of rant'. Hardwick joined the chorus of senior coaches - including Brad Scott and Ross Lyon - to point out that majority of the incidents come from the centre bounce. The three-time flag-winning coach had a unique suggestion for the second half of the season as an alternative solution. 'What can you tell me about the centre bounce of the ball? It goes anywhere, so it's really really hard for the players ... if the ball bounces sideways, they're going to move,' he said. 'Have the AFL spoken to the AFL Commission and asked, 'can we, for the remainder of the year, take away the centre bounce and throw it up and see if there's any significant change in the data?'. 'Some of those ones against Rowelly, what he's getting fined for, are quite laughable, to be perfectly honest. 'We understand the health and safety of the umpires is important, but I think we can look at speaking to the Commission about getting rid of the bounce and throwing it up.' Outside of Rowell, St Kilda's Jack Macrae (four) and Carlton's Adam Cerra (three) are other top line stars now facing suspension if they transgress again this campaign. There have been 63 charges laid for careless umpire contact so far in 2025 following 56 charges in total in 2024 and 20 in 2023.
