Rajasthan Royals Owner Manoj Badale Accuses Raj Kundra Of Blackmail In High-Stakes UK Court Battle

In a dramatic legal twist, Manoj Badale, the majority stakeholder of IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals, has accused his former co-owner Raj Kundra of blackmail. The allegation surfaced during an intense hearing at London's High Court, where Badale and his firm, Emerging Media Ventures, are suing Kundra for allegedly breaching a confidential 2019 settlement agreement. The case digs deep into the past ownership dynamics of the Royals, a team that clinched the inaugural Indian Premier League title in 2008 but has since been no stranger to controversy. The spotlight is once again on Raj Kundra, whose turbulent association with the franchise has come back to haunt both him and the Royals' hierarchy. At the heart of the dispute lies Kundra's former 11.7% stake in Rajasthan Royals—a stake he was forced to relinquish after being implicated in the 2015 IPL betting scandal. The scandal rocked Indian cricket and led to the suspension of Rajasthan Royals for two seasons. Now, nearly a decade later, Kundra claims he was 'cheated out of the true value' of his stake. In an email sent to Badale last month, Kundra alleged fraud, claiming he was 'misled and defrauded' regarding the actual worth of his equity. The message included a veiled threat: he had filed complaints with Indian authorities and was prepared to escalate the matter to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Blackmail Allegations and Legal Ripples Badale's legal team, led by barrister Adam Speker, described Kundra's actions as a 'blackmail attempt.' Court filings revealed that Kundra contacted disgraced IPL founder Lalit Modi with statements suggesting Badale would 'pay dearly' for allegedly undercutting his stake's value. These revelations, Badale argued, directly violated the terms of their 2019 settlement agreement. In response, Badale's firm secured a UK court injunction on May 30, barring Kundra from making any disparaging remarks or further breaching the agreement. This legal shield remains active until a full trial determines the case's outcome. Kundra's lawyer, William McCormick, pushed back against the blackmail charge. While agreeing to uphold the injunction, he clarified that his client's acceptance does 'not amount to an admission' of any wrongdoing. IPL Franchise in Crisis On and Off the Field While legal fireworks erupt off the field, the Rajasthan Royals franchise faces internal turmoil on the pitch as well. After an underwhelming IPL season, rumours suggest the franchise may part ways with captain Sanju Samson, their long-serving leader. Reports link the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter to Chennai Super Kings, sparking speculation that Riyan Parag could be groomed for captaincy. If true, these changes could mark a new era for the Royals—but one shadowed by off-field disputes and ownership controversies. What This Means for the IPL Landscape This high-profile legal battle has significant implications beyond just the Royals. With the IPL's brand value exceeding $12 billion, any controversy involving team ownership and internal rifts casts a shadow on the league's credibility. The BCCI, though not directly involved yet, may be forced to respond should Kundra escalate his claims. The courtroom clash also serves as a reminder of the fragile alliances behind India's most lucrative cricket property, where billion-dollar stakes, public image, and personal reputations collide.

Watch: Comedy Of Errors In Maharashtra Premier League Match, Featuring Chennai Super Kings Star, Leaves Commentators Stunned

Raigad Royals registered a brilliant six-wicket victory over Kolhapur Tuskers in the Eliminator match of Maharashtra Premier League 2025 on Friday in Pune. Opting to bowl first, the Royals restricted Kolhapur to 164/7 in 20 overs with Nikhil Kadam and Tanay Sanghvi taking three and two wickets respectively. Later, the Royals chased down the target with two balls to spare as opener Vicky Ostwal smashed 74 runs off 54 balls. Apart from this brilliant chase, the match also had a bizarre moment which became the highlight of the night. During Raigad's chase, the batter played a simple shot but the fielder did a misfield which prompted the batters to run for a single. As they were coming back for a double, they ended up colliding with each other and fell down on the ground. As the players were lying down, the wicketkeeper got the ball but surpisingly, he threw it towards the bowler. Seeing this, the batter got up and ran towards the non-striker's end and crossed the line before the bowler could dislodge the bails. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Maharashtra Premier League (@mplt20tournament) Seeing such a big blunder, Rahul Tripathi, who is Kolhapur's skipper, intervened, picked the ball and ran towards the striker's end to make another runout attempt. However, as he came closer, he made a direct hit attempt but the ball did not hit the stumps and went across the boundary line for a four. As a result, the Raigad got a total of six runs on that one particular delivery. This fiasco left the commentators stunned as they said, "Listen, there are so many things to dissect in this one!" Talking about the match, Kolhapur scored 164/7 in 20 overs with Ankit Bawne scoring 57 off 50 balls. Apart from him, Siddharth Mhatre hit 31 off 29 balls. Later in the chase, the Raigad Royals were dominating right from the beginning as their opener Vicky Ostwal scored 74 off 54 balls. Siddhesh Veer and Niraj Joshi also scored 39 and 37* runs respectively as the Royals went across the line in 19.4 overs. With this win, Royals are still in the contention for a spot in the final match against Eagle Nashik Titans. They will now take on Puneri Bappa in the Qualifier 2 match on Saturday.

Comedy of errors in Maharashtra Premier League as batters collide mid-run, get 2nd life and a boundary due to fielding goof-up

A recent Maharashtra Premier League Qualifier 1 game between Kolhapur Tuskers and Raigad Royals saw a series of comical goof-ups that would left everyone laughing, including in the dugout and the commentary box. A video going viral from the Maharashtra Premier League game shows Raigad Royals' Vicky Ostwal punching a ball from Atman Pore in the cover region and then haring down the pitch to attempt taking two runs. While Ostwal and his batting partner Siddhesh Veer are fixated on the ball in the deep, they ran straight into each other with such force that they both hit the ground in pain. This was the first goof-off in the sequence of events in a short span of time. The throw came in from the fielder in the deep to the wicketkeeper. Then a farcical series of events played out. First, the wicketkeeper, in a moment of brain fade, opted to throw the ball underarm to the bowler at the other end. This, despite the fact that he was standing in front of the batter's stumps and needed just to turn around and whip the bails off. At this point, both batters were still on the floor recovering from the blow, right in the middle of the 22-yard strip. The throw from the keeper was not something the bowler Pore was expecting. So he was not able to collect cleanly, and by the time he had picked up the ball, Siddhesh Veer had slid into the crease with a baseball-slide while his bat was still in the middle of the pitch. Now, Pore was aghast at what he had done, so he did not have the presence of mind to throw the ball back to the keeper. That's when Rahul Tripathi of Kolhapur ran to the bowler's stumps and picked up the ball. But Tripathi noticed that the wicketkeeper by this stage had walked down the pitch, so he was not in position to effect a run out. So the fielder opted to Usain Bolt his way to a run out. But by this point, Ostwal had stirred into action and was on his feet. He too started to run to the striker's end to prevent being run out. Now, came the final act of the sequence: Rahul Tripathi threw the ball with full force while also sprinting full pelt at the stumps. This made him miss all three stumps altogether and the ball speed to the boundary ropes as the Raigad Royals earned four overthrow runs.
